    1. My TURNERs from Hereford
    2. Deborah Mitchell
    3. Responding to the roll call, although it's not very long since I joined this list and posted my interests: Edmund Swan TURNER, born Hereford abt 1821. His parents, according to his marriage certificate (2nd marriage, 1877; Scotland), were John M. TURNER and Sarah Ann SWAN, by then deceased. He married Frances LOKER (difficult to read, but that's what it looks like -- born in abt 1817 in Essex) in St Pancras, London in 1847, according to a child's birth certificate. By 1855, Edmund was employed as a butler in Scotland. He and Frances had had six children, of which four had survived. The sixth was born and baptised Charlotte Margaret in the parish of Auchtergave. They had at least one further child, Hannah Maria, born in 1858 in the parish of St Andrews and St Leonards, Fife, Scotland. So far, I have been unable to find the names of the other children, and Charlotte and Hannah (known as Maria) seem to have disappeared (I've not found marriages for them, either) between the censuses of 1881 and 1891. At some point between 1858 and 1877, Edmund changed profession and set up as a grocer and wine merchant in St Andrews. Just a few months after Frances died (a "lunatic" in an asylum) in April 1877, he remarried -- to a young English girl, Ada Mary BOUCHER. They had one child, Winifred TURNER, born in November 1878 in St Andrews. Edmund died in Scotland some time between the 1891 and 1901 censuses Some time between the 1901 census and 1907, Winifred and Ada moved to Hull, Yorks, where Winifred married Henry STOKES and raised a family. Ada died, a widow, in 1915. Deborah Hants, UK

    3. Some descendants of Jubal Turner who emigrated to southern Iowa, had sons Washington Turner and Richard Turner (Richard died early on, his probate was done in Monroe Co., IA, by brother Whitfield Ross Turner), who emigrated on into MO, KS, and TX, I believe some of Washington Turner's descendants lived in these states. 3. I can relate to what you are saying. My mother when she was born was to have the middle name "Ellen" but family memebers were not happy - they wanted Elizabeth. Both names are used in the family, and it was a surprise to me when my mom passed 17 years ago to find that she never did have a middle name!!! She did have a social security card, etc, showing Mary Ellen... However, the records show the doctor never bothered with the middle name. -----Original Message----- From: Donald Turner [mailto:dturn[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, March 09, 2005 10:05 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [TURNER] records I was born at my grandmother's home.(1927) Mother knew no one in the town where she and Dad were living so she went home to have me.She gave the Dr. my name and he recorded it. 3. Believe me, I know from working for the government there are outstanding employees, average and those you hope you don't have to work the case after. Lamar Wadsworth <[email protected]> wrote:Bear in mind also that people as adults lied about their ages for whatever reason. My maternal grandmother was 2 years and 8 months older than my grandfather. She was embarrassed for people to know that she was that much older than her husband. She would admit to 8 months but not 2 years and 8 months. When she died, as his last act of devotion to the only woman he ever loved, my grandfather had her preferred date of birth--1887 rather than 1885--inscribed on her tombstone. One of my great-grandmothers was born 1871 according to her tombstone. She shouldn't have been on the 1870 census at all if we believe her tombstone, but she was not only on the 1870 census, she was 5 years old in 1870. Census records are not infallible for a variety of reasons. The census taker may have been very conscientious or may not have given a hoot. The census taker may have been a local schoolteacher picking up some extra money over the summer as a census worker, or the census taker may have been the town drunk. Sometimes a family wasn't at home when the census taker came and, instead of going back later, the census taker asked a neighbor. The neighbor, of course, didn't know the exact ages and guessed at it. Perhaps the neighbor omitted one of the children or got one of the children's names wrong. A good general rule is that the closer the creation of the record is to the time of the event, the more accurate it is likely to be. For instance, here in GA where births were not officially recorded until 1919, I would give more weight to a family Bible record that appears to have been recorded when the child was born than I would give to a census record indicating that the child is X years old. An 1870 census record showing that my gr-grandmother was 5 years old in 1870 carries more weight than a tombstone that says she was born in 1871. When sources give different ages for the same person, it is a judgement call as to which source is most likely to be accurate. --Lamar On Tue, 8 Mar 2005 19:26:48 -0600 "Margaret Davis" writes: > My mother's family always said that my uncle was born December 24th > 1910. > After the census came on line I found him in the 1910 census and he > was 2 > years old. 3. Hello Turner List followers> This problem of confirming information is much larger than you can imagin. I used information acquired from the archives in Utah for years. And it was totaly wrong. I have a Jubal Turner b. 1793, who married a Milly Ross (b. 1797). The archives stated she was a Milly Ross of Kentucky, daughter of a John Ross, (who was listed as a supposed chief of indians in Kentucky). I was puzzled, for a long time. I was able to finally acquire the location of there marriage, in Virginia, even who, they were married by, and who her surety was by (normally a relative, father, brother, etc.). Her surety at the wedding was a Sutherland Ross, also of Virginia, and a son of a John Ross of Virginia. I have more confidence in using the John Ross of Virginia, and a brother Sutherland Ross than I do a chief of Indians in Kentucky. So much said, you have to question even the archives in Utah. I have another family of Wild, Utah's archives continually spell this name two ways, Wilde, and also a Wilf. We have to do our own questioning, and hope for the best and most proof. Have been doing this for many many years, and still have to do my own questioning. Have a great day, here it is going to be warm (70 in Oregon, in March, most unusual, but that is the way it will be). Evelyn

    1. sometimes errors actually help!
    2. While most of the time transcription errors and misunderstandings are frustrating and confusing, there are rare occasions where they can actually be helpful. I was looking for descendants of a great-uncle known only to my living relatives as "Maney." Many, many searches using that name had been fruitless until I found a census from his childhood that listed the eldest child as "Mary Ann." Since I was certain I knew all of the children in the family, "Mary Ann" could only be "Maney." Lo and behold, when you say the female name out loud, it sounds like "Marion." Turns out that was Maney's real name--and I was off and running. Just an encouraging thought for the day... Ruth Ann
