Thanks Pam for the info. I'll keep it and try to connect it in the future. If we can make a connection, it will sure fill in a lot of blanks for this family. I know quite a lot about the descendants of some of Fielding and Nancy's children, especially Josiah. This is a very long shot but you never know. My Samuel Turner, born 1812, SC, arried in TX 15 Sept 1837, no idea where he was from 1812-1837. He married Emily Midkiff, born 1818 TN on 9 Aug 1839 in Nacogdoches Co, TX. His brother in law, Henry Midkiff, married a lady Eliza (last name unknown) who had been widowed from her former husband, a Mr Odell. Henry and wife lived in Orange Co, TX on 1860 census. Samuel Turner and family were on 1860, Trinity Co, TX census. In that same county were the descedents of a Littleton Turner, born around 1786 I think in SC. Haven't found any connections to this Littleton Turner family but is it likely that you might? Hi Joanne, It turns out as I look back that it is the Fentons where I am stuck. I had forgotten I had essentially solved my friend's TURNER line. What I am stuck on is the FENTON link. Samuel TURNER (son of Samuel Turner & Mary Stocker) b. 18 Jan 1749/50 in Salisbury, Litchfield, CT married a Sarah FENTON. They had a son Miles TURNER b. 1785 VT who married Hannah COLE and had Lois Fenton TURNER born in Gouverneur, St. Lawrence, NY in 1831. Interestingly enough a mystery of two Miles TURNERs in Gouverneur, NY in 1810 was solved through help I received on this list a year or two back. They turned out to have an uncle-nephew relationship. However, I never have learned much about the uncle's family. There are so few postings for NYS Turners, that I always try to see if there are any connections when I see a NYS Turner posting. You cannot always believe the civil records. I have a copy of the marriage record of my grandmother. She was a child from a second marriage, the authorities mixed up all the names, and the names of her parents were incorrect. For a while I wondered if she was adopted! This was a small town, I suppose they knew everyone, and got mixed up! One of my great-grandmothers was born 1871 according to her tombstone. She shouldn't have been on the 1870 census at all if we believe her tombstone, but she was not only on the 1870 census, she was 5 years old in 1870. Census records are not infallible for a variety of reasons. The census taker may have been very conscientious or may not have given a hoot. The census taker may have been a local schoolteacher picking up some extra money over the summer as a census worker, or the census taker may have been the town drunk. Sometimes a family wasn't at home when the census taker came and, instead of going back later, the census taker asked a neighbor. The neighbor, of course, didn't know the exact ages and guessed at it. Perhaps the neighbor omitted one of the children or got one of the children's names wrong. A good general rule is that the closer the creation of the record is to the time of the event, the more accurate it is likely to be. For instance, here in GA where births were not officially recorded until 1919, I would give more weight to a family Bible record that appears to have been recorded when the child was born than I would give to a census record indicating that the child is X years old. An 1870 census record showing that my gr-grandmother was 5 years old in 1870 carries more weight than a tombstone that says she was born in 1871. When sources give different ages for the same person, it is a judgement call as to which source is most likely to be accurate. --Lamar On Tue, 8 Mar 2005 19:26:48 -0600 "Margaret Davis" writes: > My mother's family always said that my uncle was born December 24th > 1910. > After the census came on line I found him in the 1910 census and he > was 2 > years old. I have a James Turner born in New York 29 Jan 1813. He married in Montgomery County, (Dayton), Ohio in 1833 Catherine Foutz who was born In Maryland. This birth info came from the 1880 census. This is absolutely all I Know. Most of you seem to be researching people from the South. >> Which Turners are you looking for in NY and what time frame? Our Turners (John & Mary Turner plus 10 kids) were in Oswego Co (the county just south of Jefferson) from ~1818-~1840 & Peter Helmer Turner worked in Jefferson Co. & married Lydia Ann Smith there in 1836 before heading out west in the 1840s.
