    2. This is for Gail R. Blancett. Thanks Gail for your reply to my query. I am a little disappointed that my Elijah was not one of those on the 1840 census, but hopefully I will be able to break through my Turner brick wall one of these days! I had hoped to get my brother's DNA recorded (he was the last male descendant in our immediate family), but sadly he was very ill for a long time and died in December. I am going to try to get one of my male cousins to do this for our Turner line, but not sure I will be successful. Thanks again, Jean Wigglesworth

Had sister Melissa Ann RICHARDSON born between 1855-1859, probably in Richmond, HENRICO County, and a brother Will (William?) Richardson. The Richardson siblings MAY have been children of David and Sarah Richardson. Census for 1860 Richmond shows a son George but not with last name Turner in the David and Sarah Richardson family, along with a daughter Melissa. George and family would have been living in the CAMPBELL County (near Lynchburg) area in the 1880's. Any connections out there? Janice

    1. Re: Elijah Turners in 1840 Census Spartanburg Co., SC
    2. Gail R. Blancett
    3. This is in reply to Jean Wigglesworth's posting wondering if her Elijah Turner married to Ann Bennett could be one of the three Elijah Turners on the 1840 Census in Spartanburg Co., SC. I checked with a man who has done extensive research on the family of Elijah Turner Sr. of Spartanburg. Elijah Turner Sr. is on the 1840 census on page 99. He is 60-70 years old. He had a son Elijah Jr. who was married to Cynthia. This Elijah Jr. is the one on p. 138 of the 1840 Census of Spartanburg Co., SC He was a 30-40 year old male as was the woman who was probably his wife. Children were 2 M U 5; 2 M 10-15. This couple went to TN by 1850 but are not the couple in Cocke Co., TN. The third Elijah Turner in the 1840 Census of Spartanburg was on page 155. This Elijah is son of Mathias Turner (son of Elijah Sr.). This household makeup shows Elijah as 20-30 years old as is wife and 1 F under 5; 2 F 5-10. I think this rules this particular three out. We have this group documented in the Turner DNA Project Kit #8538. Gail According to census records, my GG grandfather, Elijah Turner (c1799-c1865), was born in South Carolina, as was his wife, Anne (Bennett) Turner, and their 5 children. They moved to Cocke County, Tennessee sometime after 1839 (the date their youngest child was born in SC) and before the 1850 Cocke County, TN, census was taken. I have not yet been able to trace this family any further back, however, I have found 1830 and 1840 census records for Spartanburg County, SC, for an Elijah Turner which shows the same number of family members with the same sex and ages as my Elijah Turner family. If this family sounds familiar to anyone, I would sure love to hear from you. Jean Turner Wigglesworth Mason, OH [email protected]

    1. Isom and Isham Turners
    2. Gail R. Blancett
    3. Don't know if this is the same Isom that Lisa had records for in Texas or not. 1820 Census of Richmond Co., NC p. 170 has an Isom Turner and a Thomas Turner. Not living adjacent but both of them are living near people with last name Pate so that the census taker's route may indicate they lived closer than they appear. There was an Isham Turner in GA by at least 1801 because the Headright and Bounty Grant index shows several grants to an Isham Turner in Liberty County, GA in the 1801-1805 time period. 1805 Land Lottery list (and it required 3 years residency in GA when registration was done in 1803) Isham Turner living in Liberty Co. had two draws--he won one lot called a "prize" and one was what was called a "blank". He had to have been a married man to get two draws. Isham is not on the 1806 or 1809 Tax lists for Liberty Co. (which have been published). However, there is an Isham Turner on the Baldwin Co., 1810 Tax list living in Coxe's Militia District. The lots given out during the 1805 Land Lottery were in Baldwin and Wilkinson County. So, it is entirely possible that the move for Isham Turner (assuming it is the same man) from Liberty Co. to Baldwin Co. can be explained by that win he had on the 1805 Land Lottery. But whether this was the same Isham Turner who later shows up in 1830 in Marion County I don't know. I did a quick check of records I have for GA which includes the published tax digests (which certainly are not comprehensive) and land lottery info (only winners of lots were listed after the 1805 list which included all that registered) and I don't find any other mentions of Isham between 1810 and 1830 which is a pretty long time to be missing if it is the same man.

    3. I cannot guarantee this will help but it might be useful. I have Watson and Harris families who left Marion Co, SC and Robeson Co, NC around 1820's and moved westward. Also have Waters, Watters and Walters, Ford, Franklin, Rawls, Lennon, Morris, Spring, McClendon, Womack, Chapman moving from same area westward. Most of them went from NC/SC into MS but some others could have stopped over in GA. There was a migration from those areas in SC/NC all the way into TX during time period 1820-1850 or so. Another note. For Jasper County, TX court house I did find a LOT of land transactions for an Isom Turner in the 1840's and I'm not sure who this man was. Could he have been actually an Isham? I don't know. Seems a close spelling of a name. Anyone have an Isom Turner who could have been making large land deals in 1840's TX? "Gail R. Blancett" <[email protected]> wrote: Barbara, I'm assuming you are looking at the family of Henry Turner who married Lucinda Waddel/Waddel who lived in Marion Co., GA in 1840 and 1850 Census and then later in same county. In going back ward to 1830 trying to locate Henry in census, I didn't turn him up but used the neighbors in 1840 and 1850 as markers to search for any Turners living in that area. The names I homed in on were Nathan Watson and Noel Waddle. I also found an Elisha Harris near some of them on 1840 so watched that name also. I am not trying to imply any connection with Elisha Harris, only as a possible indication of neighbors that might help me know if I had the correct Turners. In 1830 in Marion Co. I found the following Turners: p. 137 Isham Turner 1 M 20-30; 1 M 50-60; 1 F 15-20; 2 F 20-30; 1 F 50-60 near an Elisha Harris p. 141 Alexander Turner with 2 M U5; 1 M 20-30; 1 F U5; 1 F 20-30 p. 142 John Turner with 3 M U5; 1 M 30-40; 1 F U5; 1 F 5-10; 1 F 15-20 I would think that it would be helpful to consider Isham Turner 50-60 years old here as a potential relative of Henry Turner. We might have expected Henry Turner to be head of household in 1830 when is age would make him around 30 years old, but he isn't here. Of course, he might not have arrived in Marion Co. but I think it is a possibility that he could be that 20-30 year old male in the household of Isham Turner and that perhaps one of the two 20-30 year old females could be his wife Lucinda or even the female 15-20 years old since her age in 1850 suggests she would have been around 17 in 1830. His later census suggests he didn't have any children born before 1830. With a male named Isham living with him in 1850, that could also indicate he might have named a "son" after his father Isham. However, what is interesting to me is the the ages of the children listed in the household in 1850 are not listed in neat descending order. When I see that in census, I always consider the possibility all those children were not his but perhaps some other children he had taken in--nephews maybe? I haven't studied that family enough to know whether all the children listed for Henry and Lucinda on some of the Family Trees at Rootsweb are supportable or not--lots of kids! But, I certainly believe that Isham is someone that if I were looking for information on Henry would be a name I would want to check out. I don't see that any of the Rootsweb Family Trees list a father for Henry. I will suggest that you might want to consider finding a male Turner directly descended from your Thomas Dozier Turner who would join the Turner DNA Project and do the test. We have quite a growing number of lines documented who were in GA and SC. It will not tell you who Henry's father was but it may help you identify a "group" of Turners to which Henry may be related and it will certainly help you rule out those that you can not be related to. Sometimes ruling out lines is as valuable when working on such a common surname as Turner. I know that the list owner suggested that all things related to DNA be put on the Turner-DNA-L but unless everyone on this list is subscribed to that one, it is nothing more than the preacher preaching to the choir.
