Flodette My ggg grandfather was named Daniel Peterson Tucker. He was born in 1810 either in SC or GA. His father was named William Tucker (one source lists him as William J. Tucker). I have long puzzled over the Jasper County, GA census records from 1810 through 1860. William Tucker appeared in the 1820, 1830, 1840, and 1850 censuses of Jasper County, GA, but not in 1860. William Tucker appeared in the 1840 census of Newton County, GA, but I have not found him in the either the 1850 or 1860 census in Newton County. This is strange, since one would think that he would have been there by then. Rockdale County was not formed until October 18, 1870. William Tucker, father of Madison Tucker, according to his tombstone in the Presbyterian Camp Ground Cemetery in Smyrna, GA died on August 25, 1865, aged 82 years. It is not clear if the Williams of Jasper County listed in the censuses above are all the same William. In fact, based on the age ranges of the children and the 10-year difference between the censuses, it is very difficult to say that they are the same William. It appears that the Jasper County William may have had different spouses in 1820, 1830, and 1840 if, in fact that we are dealing with only one William. An article in The Heritage of Rockdale County, GA says "William, having lost two wives, moved with his children and apparently third wife Delania Lindsay to Newton County early in the 19th century." According to this story, Madison was born in 1826 in Jasper County, GA. His tombstone in the Presbyterian Camp Ground Cemetery confirms the date. There was no William Tucker in the 1820 Newton County census, but there was one in the 1830 Newton County census. However, based on the ages of the children in the home, it does not appear that this William Tucker was the same one that was in Jasper County in 1820, though it cannot be absolutely stated that he was not. The whole thing is a giant puzzle and I don't have enough of the pieces to fit it together. My main reason for interest in this (or these) Williams is this: A William Tucker bought land in Jasper County from William Watts in 1811. This land is approximately 3 miles northwest of Shady Dell, GA. Jeremiah Lumsden owned adjacent land. Samuel Thompson bought land from Jeremiah Lumsden in 1811. Jeremiah Lumsden was the father of Mary "Polly" Lumsden. Mary "Polly" married Samuel Thompson. One of their daughters was Wilmoth Lumsden Thompson, who married Daniel Peterson Tucker, my ggg grandfather. in 1826. Thus, we have William Tucker, his son Daniel Peterson Tucker, Daniel's Wife and her father and grandfather living less than a mile from each other at the same time. I have a lot of trouble thinking that the William there was not my ancestor. It is reported in family lore that William Tucker, father of Daniel Peterson Tucker, died in 1851 in Macon, GA. A fellow researcher pointed out to me that there is a small town named Machen about a mile from Shady Dell. I now believe that he may have died in Machen, not Macon. This seems pretty logical to me since the information about this was probably passed on verbally, and Machen and Macon could be easily confused. I have been to Macon and there is no record there that seems to support a William Tucker dying there in 1851. Today, there is a Tucker Town road and a Tucker-Perry road in the area where this old Tucker-Lumsden-Thompson land existed. I do not know the origin of the names of the current roads and it could be only coincidence. Jeremiah Lumsden is buried just off of today's HW 142 near the parallel railway just off of that highway. Somewhere around Machen or Shady Dell, I would expect to find a grave of my gggg grandfather, William Tucker, though it now may be totally lost. Another scenario is that the William Tucker that is the father of Madison was also the father of Daniel Peterson Tucker, perhaps by a spouse prior to Delania Lindsay. To throw in another bit of information, my ggg grandfather, Daniel Peterson Tucker was living in Newton County, GA at the time of the 1830 census (p. 15). "Next door" was his father-in-law Samuel Thompson, and John Pearson Thompson, the oldest brother of Wilmoth Lumsden Thompson, the wife of Daniel Peterson. There was also a William Tucker there at the time (p. 18). This William, age 40-49 had 3 boys and 1 girl under 10 years of age. His spouse was 30-39 years old. While I am tempted to say that this was my gggg grandfather, there is nothing to support this. And the mysteries go on. I would be greatly indebted to anyone that can provide any additional information about the William Tuckers of Jasper and Newton Counties, GA in the 1810-1865 time period.
