Walt ,I did put you and David in touch with each other and hope you can find some answers. Also don't forget about Littleberry Tucker and Zacharias(sp) that are also in Adair Co KY very early. They were lawyers and represented Pleasant Tucker in VA .Pleasant Tucker also was living in Adair Co. Son's of Drury? of VA I think . There are so many Tuckers in that one area it is amazing. It includes Greene Co and all or most of the counties were taken from Nelson Co KY. However, I have some evidence that even though they were Ky counties the land records were still recorded in VA in Richmond which is where I suggest you look before 1820 period. Plus Nathan or Nathaniel is also there before 1810.Hope this helped. Pat
Pat and Others, Thank you to everyone that has sent me information. I appreciate your help very much. Sorry for the long message, but I thought it might help to tell you what I both know and don't know. Yes, I know the family of the elder Drury Tucker (1719-1801) of Amherst County, VA quite well. I have traced the lines of several of his 11 children, including William (Wofford) Tucker, Littleberry Tucker, and Zachariah Tucker, who wound up in Adair County, KY. The 11 children I have listed for Drury Tucker (1719-1801), per his will are Mary Douglas, William Tucker, Daniel Tucker, Martha Rucker, Matthew Tucker, Milley Harrison, Robert Tucker, Isaac Tucker, Littleberry Tucker, Zachariah Tucker, and Pleasant Tucker. I show that Drury Tucker (1719-1801) was a son of John Tucker and Catherine ?? of Prince George Co., Virginia. John Tucker was the son of Francis Tucker (1653-1723, married to Mary ?), born in Warwick Co., Bermuda. Given that my William Tucker was not the son of William (Wofford) Tucker, I at one time thought he could have been a child of Littleberry, Pleasant, or Zachariah, brothers to William Wofford Tucker. Unfortunately, all children of Littleberry, Pleasant, and Zachariah are accounted for, and my William Tucker is not among them. There is still the possibility that my William Tucker might have been descended from a brother of the elder Drury Tucker (that is, descended from another son of John Tucker and Catherine ??), making him a second or third cousin to some of the other Adair County, KY Tuckers. That is the gap I am trying to bridge. Here is the account my gg-grandfather gave of his father and his ancestry. My gg-grandfather supplied this information in October, 1898 at the age of 94, which was then published in the local paper (for the entire article and obituary, see http://www.rootsweb.com/~orgenweb/bios/henrybtucker.html): ------------------- "Henry Bellenger Tucker was born in Kentucky in 1804. His father was a Kentucky rifleman, originally from North Carolina, and was with Hull in the war of 1812, from which he never returned. "Granddaddy" Tucker, as he is familiarly called by all old pioneers, was married in Indiana in 1829 to Elizabeth McKay. They had six children -- Martha, Mary, Sara, and Louisa Tucker, and the two sons, the latter only surviving. His wife died at Beaverton August 3, 1881, on the donation land claim taken up in 1852. Mr. Tucker is about 5 feet 8 inches in height, and, notwithstanding his 94 years, walks as erect as an Indian, and still retains his mental faculties. He is very vigorous, and is a good story teller. As late as two years ago he read without the use of glasses. In the early days he was a famous rifle shot, and his prowess, and that of his two sons, was undisputed at the old-time shooting matches. His first vote for president was cast for Andrew Jackson. Since the civil war he has been a Republican. He is the sole survivor of six children. His ancestors came from the Bermudas, and were early settlers of Virginia." -------------------- My gg-grandfather died a year later (May, 1899). Here is what his obituary had to say about his ancestry: "Henry Bellenger Tucker, aged 96, who came to Oregon in August 1852, died at the home of his son, William Tucker, near Beaverton, Friday, May 4, of pneumonia. Deceased was born in Kentucky, December 12, 1804. His father, Wm. Tucker, was a North Carolinan, and was one of the Kentucky pioneers. When the war of 1812 broke out he joined Hull's forces at Detroit as one of the Kentucky riflemen. From there he never returned, and it is supposed he was ambushed by the indians while returning from the frontier." ------------------------ In a separate, handwritten account, he also named his father as William Tucker (seen in obituary excerpt). Henry B. Tucker listed his birthdate as December 12, 1804, and his birthplace as Adair Co, KY. Given the above information, I was able to find Kentucky military records for my William Tucker, and document his death at the battle for river raisin as a member of Allen's Regiment of Kentucky Volunteers (who served under General Hull). Also, I found records of William Tucker's residence along Wolf Creek in Adair Co., KY and the 1810 census shows him having six children. Subsquent documentation supports everything my gg-grandfather said about his ancestry and birthplace. The confusing part comes with the other Tuckers also residing in Adair County, KY. Were they relatives (distant cousins) or not? The part I haven't been able to find is anything prior to Adair County (the trail through North Carolina and before remains a mystery). However, the last sentence describes the ancestry of the other Tuckers who resided in Adair County (descendents of Drury Tucker of Amherst Co, VA), which makes me think the lines are somehow connected. If I can bridge this connection somehow, I can then tie my line into the Virginia/Bermuda Tuckers and probably get back to Throwleigh, England (Robert D. Tucker's line). Unfortunately, my gg-grandfather left just enough information to tease me, but not enough to give me the concrete details to bridge the gap. Another clue is my gg-grandfather's middle name of "Bellinger". I have found a 1790 marriage record of a Martha BALLINGER to a "Mr. TUCKER" in Guilford County, NC. Was "Mr. Tucker" my William Tucker? The timing and place would be about right and allow them to have six children by 1810. In addition, Martha BALLINGER was the granddaughter of Henry BALLINGER and had a brother named Henry BALLINGER. If Marth Ballinger married my William Tucker, it would make sense that they might name a son Henry Bellinger Tucker (I assume the middle name was changed in transcription). In addition, Ballingers and Tuckers have this habit of intermingling. I have uncovered a couple of court documents of Drury Tucker (1719-1801) of Amherst Co., VA with a Ballinger (apparently a neighbor) as a witness. Moses Ballinger (father of Martha Ballinger) migrated from Guilford Co., NC to Jefferson Co, TN, where several other Tuckers migrated. Records of Adair Co, KY show several Ballingers and Tuckers enlisted in the same military regiments and on the same tax rolls. Coincidence? Again, I appreciate everyone's help and I encourage you to keep sending me information. You never know what little nugget of information might be the big clue I have been searching for. -- Walt Tucker Aurora, OR pat wrote: Walt ,I did put you and David in touch with each other and hope you can find some answers.
