How much more of your family can you sent for additional research? Alton Loveless Marsha Hamilton <mshamilton@kih.net> wrote: I was interested to read this information on Caswell, Tucker and Staples. My mother's maiden name was Tucker, her earliest ancestor that we know of was Robert Tucker b abt 1770 in Lunenburg, Co., VA formed from Amelia Co., removed to Stokes Co., NC md Sarah Sallie Smith.. Robert's son Anderson Tucker b abt 1794 came from Stokes CO, NC to Larue Co., KY md in 1815 to Nancy Hawkins daughter of Wm and Nancy. This family intermarried with the Staples and the Caswell's too. Does anyone know this family above? There were a number of Tucker and Hartleys that came from Altamarle co., Va. to Burke and then many of these came to Hancock, Bradley and olther east Tennessee countries. Some of the Hancock Tuckers also went south into Bradley County. Some attended the same church in Bradley county, etc. I think it might be George David Tucker, but....? ----------------------------------------------------- Here are some mixed notes on Caswell, etc.: Caswell and Lucinda Staples Tucker lived and died in Tennessee.Ten of their 13 children went to Faulkner County Arkansas. At least four of the sons were soldiers in the Civil War fighting for the Union Army. They moved to Arkansas to homestead land. The Faulkner county archive said that there were 13 children and that a daughter married Andrew Jackson Battle. She is listed as the 6th child. Caswell Tucker was born in North Carolina but moved to Bradley County, Tennessee where he lived most of his life. He is buried in the King cemetery near Cleveland, Tennessee. The 1850 Bradley Co., Tn. census shows he and Lucinda in house #1378. The Census shows the following information. Caswell Tucker, 45 WagonMaker, NC; Lucinda 38, Va.; Thomas 21 farmer, Tn.;George 19 farmer Tn.; Daniel 16 farmer Tn.; John 10 Tn.; Eliza 9 Tn.; Margaret 6 Tn.; Charles 2 Tn. Caswell has been of some interest to the few who research the George Tucker family of (old) Burke County, N.C., because he eventually came to live in Bradley County, TN, and because his father-in-law, John Staples, lived near George Tucker's widow, Mary (d.1816), when the Burke census of 1810 was taken. Caren Tidwell's Staples material posted on GenForum on 24 August l998 (search "Burke County, N.C") adds another clue: John Staples is said to have been born in Albemarle Co. VA., in 1757. Although the pre-Burke history of George Tucker (cl743-cl803-04) has resisted all efforts to unveil it, his neighbors included a good many people who came from Albemarle. George/Mary (Davis??) Tucker had three sons known to have survived to parenthood: William. Sr.(l768-l808)who married Nancy Grider and died in Burke County; George David (b.1769)who married Nancy Hartley and perhaps left Burke Co. under his own steam cl8l5, taking most of a flock of at least l0 children with him, their n! ames mostly unknown; and John (bl777) who is almost certainly the John Tucker (l777-l870) who removed by 1820 to Monroe County, MS with his wife, Margaret Mayfield. Monroe County John was the father of several children, including Tilghman Mayfield Tucker (l802-1859) who was a governor of MS in the early 1840's. William Tucker, Sr., died at 40, leaving eight sons and one daughter (born 1790 to l809) all of whom were out of old Burke Co. by about 1839. Some of them took their widowed mother and moved to Bradley County, TN, where desc yet remain, though the Tucker name has faded away among them. They lie in Fort Hill Cemetery, Cleveland, TN. William Sr.and PERHAPS George David had offspring who lived in Hawkins County, TN. With an 1805 birth, Caswell was the right age to have been a child of George David. (The names of the children of Wm Sr., and John all are known). George David's eldest child was born in l790. If John Staples did not exit old Burke Co. until c1816, his daughter Lucinda was of marriageable age while they were there, were she born c1795, although this discovery is shadowed by the fact that seemingly she was Caswell's senior by a decade). I am not certain all the above Caswell/Staples dates are precise. If you see any promise this Burke County theory, we can refine it. Will you please tell me why at least some Caswell researchers assign him birth in Stokes County, N.C. The Tuckers lived in the area that is now Lenoir, in present Caldwell County, N.C., and were were represented there from cl778 when land records of their neighbors mention George's boundaries. His was a family of blacksmiths who form a colorful part of Caldwell County history. Blessedly, they were the only Tuckers of their time and place, a special good fortune because the Burke Co. courthouse records were pillaged in April 1865. I look foward to hearing from you.
