Hi Joan. The land lottery was indeed the land of the Cherokee's who were removed 1838 and sent on what is called the Trail of Tears. It is in North GA and parts of lower east TN and N.E. Ala. The lottery gave priority to those who served in the 1812 and other wars. So if you have a low number it may be that your ancestor had served in these wars. What was then left was given out to the next with slips drawn from the 2nd lottery. In some of the deeds or BLM records(no longer on line) they list the name of the tribal member who was disposessed .I have collected quite a few of these . Pat
