Elizabeth Davis was born on the 21st day of Nov. 1761. She was an illegitimate child of a woman named Davis. Her father was John Tucker [sic], a brother of William Tucker who entered and settled on the farm now owned by E. W. Faucette, south-east of Lenoir. This woman, Davis, lived on a farm adjoining Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, and was an inmate at Jefferson's home frequently. She emmegrated to N.C., in the year 1775. In the year 1782 she married Geo. Hartley, who entered and settled on the farm now owned by David Griffin Esq. About the year 1791 he sold out to David Rippetoe and entered 160 acres on a branch of Gunpowder Creek south of the Turkey Cock mountain which name he gave it. The entry was bounded as follows: Beginning at a black oak and runs south 40 chains to a pine in Johnson's line; thence east crossing the branch 40 chains to a stake; thence north crossing the branch to a chestnut tree; thence crossing a fork of said branch to the beginning. Dated Nov. 27th 1792. I give the courses of this grant to show how different things were then from now. Larkin Hartley their first childwas born on the 1st day of Nov.1783. Clinton Hartley was born on 22nd of July 1786. Mahaley Hartley was born on the 30th May 1789. Alfred Hartley was born the 3rd day of June 1793. George Hartley was born the 6th day of March 1796. Waightstill Hartley was born the 20th of Sept. 1800. James Hartley was born the 17, January 1803. Some persons have expressed surprise that George Hartley would settled on a piece of land as broken and rough as was the 160 acres he entered south of Hibriten. It is easy to account for both, he and his boy[s] were perfect Nimrods. Clinton and George were noted for their success in hunting.Their father generally gave them Saturday to hunt. On one season they agreed to kill nothing but bears that day. George brought in 5 and Clinton 4-9 [sic] bears on one day. If you doubt it I can give you the man that got it from Clinton and anyone that knew Clinton Hartley would not doubt his word. You must remember that was about 130 years ago and wild turkeys were abundant and it is surprising how many good hunters would gather in with a good days work. That is why the old man named the mountain "turkey cock." The next knob north east he called "turkey hen" the next "peahen." It may be remembered that when Judge Cloud held court for Caldwell he charged the grand jury to find a true bill against the person who changed the name. On the whole, the Hartleys were a remarkable family. They were all very large men, lived on the best--wild meat all the time --wore homespun cloth of their own make, made brandy and whiskey, took a drink every morning and all died with old age. They were all members of the Episcopal Church, under the pastorate of the Rev. R. J. That was really interesting information, Alton, including the fact that Elizabeth Davis chose to live in similar country as she had been raised in. If you drove up to Monticello, or up the road further to Ash Lawn, you know that those mountains must have been nearly inpassable in anything except good weather. The area in NC where they located sounds just as rugged - not to mention a barrier to anyone you don't want as a visitor. Did your source have any other mention of Tuckers from that area in Va? My John Tucker relative that we have the farthest hard trace on came from Amelia Co and his family was tightly entertwined with that of Valentine Fentress/Fantress and Sarah Elizabeth Hogg of Albemarle. My John Tucker was born ca 1759, so he's not Elizabeth Davis' father, but he is close enough in age that he could be of the same family. We know we can discount the Bermuda Tuckers, as they entered the country about the same time as our John was born. If Elizabeth had been fathered by one of that family it might have been well known. I was interested to read this information on Caswell, Tucker and Staples. My mother's maiden name was Tucker, her earliest ancestor that we know of was Robert Tucker b abt 1770 in Lunenburg, Co., VA formed from Amelia Co., removed to Stokes Co., NC md Sarah Sallie Smith.. Robert's son Anderson Tucker b abt 1794 came from Stokes CO, NC to Larue Co., KY md in 1815 to Nancy Hawkins daughter of Wm and Nancy. This family intermarried with the Staples and the Caswell's too. Does anyone know this family above? Thanks Marsha Smith-Hamilton at MsHamilton@kih.net Campbellsville, Taylor (old Green Co., KY) -----Original Message----- From: ALTON LOVELESS [mailto:alton.loveless@prodigy.net] Sent: Friday, February 06, 2004 2:09 PM To: TUCKER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TUCKER-L] James Tucker>TN-ARK I cannot comfirm who Caswell's father was but I think he is one of the Tuckers that came from Burke Co., NC. There were a number of Tucker and Hartleys that came from Altamarle co., Va. to Burke and then many of these came to Hancock, Bradley and olther east Tennessee countries. Some of the Hancock Tuckers also went south into Bradley County. Some attended the same church in Bradley county, etc. I think it might be George David Tucker, but....? ----------------------------------------------------- Here are some mixed notes on Caswell, etc.: Caswell and Lucinda Staples Tucker lived and died in Tennessee.Ten of their 13 children went to Faulkner County Arkansas. At least four of the sons were soldiers in the Civil War fighting for the Union Army. They moved to Arkansas to homestead land. The Faulkner county archive said that there were 13 children and that a daughter married Andrew Jackson Battle. She is listed as the 6th child. Caswell Tucker was born in North Carolina but moved to Bradley County, Tennessee where he lived most of his life. He is buried in the King cemetery near Cleveland, Tennessee. The 1850 Bradley Co., Tn. census shows he and Lucinda in house #1378. The Census shows the following information. Caswell Tucker, 45 WagonMaker, NC; Lucinda 38, Va.; Thomas 21 farmer, Tn.;George 19 farmer Tn.; Daniel 16 farmer Tn.; John 10 Tn.; Eliza 9 Tn.; Margaret 6 Tn.; Charles 2 Tn. Caswell has been of some interest to the few who research the George Tucker family of (old) Burke County, N.C., because he eventually came to live in Bradley County, TN, and because his father-in-law, John Staples, lived near George Tucker's widow, Mary (d.1816), when the Burke census of 1810 was taken. Caren Tidwell's Staples material posted on GenForum on 24 August l998 (search "Burke County, N.C") adds another clue: John Staples is said to have been born in Albemarle Co. VA., in 1757. Although the pre-Burke history of George Tucker (cl743-cl803-04) has resisted all efforts to unveil it, his neighbors included a good many people who came from Albemarle. George/Mary (Davis??) Tucker had three sons known to have survived to parenthood: William. Sr.(l768-l808)who married Nancy Grider and died in Burke County; George David (b.1769)who married Nancy Hartley and perhaps left Burke Co. under his own steam cl8l5, taking most of a flock of at least l0 children with him, their n! ames mostly unknown; and John (bl777) who is almost certainly the John Tucker (l777-l870) who removed by 1820 to Monroe County, MS with his wife, Margaret Mayfield. Monroe County John was the father of several children, including Tilghman Mayfield Tucker (l802-1859) who was a governor of MS in the early 1840's. William Tucker, Sr., died at 40, leaving eight sons and one daughter (born 1790 to l809) all of whom were out of old Burke Co. by about 1839. Some of them took their widowed mother and moved to Bradley County, TN, where desc yet remain, though the Tucker name has faded away among them. They lie in Fort Hill Cemetery, Cleveland, TN. William Sr.and PERHAPS George David had offspring who lived in Hawkins County, TN. With an 1805 birth, Caswell was the right age to have been a child of George David. (The names of the children of Wm Sr., and John all are known). George David's eldest child was born in l790. If John Staples did not exit old Burke Co. until c1816, his daughter Lucinda was of marriageable age while they were there, were she born c1795, although this discovery is shadowed by the fact that seemingly she was Caswell's senior by a decade). I am not certain all the above Caswell/Staples dates are precise. If you see any promise this Burke County theory, we can refine it. Will you please tell me why at least some Caswell researchers assign him birth in Stokes County, N.C. The Tuckers lived in the area that is now Lenoir, in present Caldwell County, N.C., and were were represented there from cl778 when land records of their neighbors mention George's boundaries. His was a family of blacksmiths who form a colorful part of Caldwell County history. Blessedly, they were the only Tuckers of their time and place, a special good fortune because the Burke Co. courthouse records were pillaged in April 1865. I look foward to hearing from you. Hi Listers, Everyone seems to be posting their brick walls, so I am hoping some of you can help me. My difficulty is with John Tucker, born 3 April 1836 in England. I am not sure who his parents were or where he was from in England, but the history I have been able to piece together shows that he enlisted in the Confederacy in Britton's Neck, SC, in 1861. He married Sarah Jane Tindal from Marion District, SC. Their first daughter, Mary Comella Tucker was born in 1863 and Rebecca Jane Tucker was born in 1868. Sarah Jane Died in 1872. I located Sarah Jane with her parents in the 1860 Marion Census, but I have never been able to locate John Tucker in an 1860 or 1870 Census. I did find him in the 1880 Horry County, SC Census with wife #2, Mary Jane Todd, and their two sons, Nathan Claude Tucker and Joseph Rollins Tucker. I found that John was buried in Conway, SC. If you have Tucker family in SC, please check to see if you can locate a John Tucker born in 1836 in England, or if you have any suggestions for me, please advise. Many thanks. Jeannie

Hi, I too have a dead end, with a James D. Tucker, b.1858 in TN to David Tucker Jr. and Levina Sherwood. I have last found him on the 1880 census in Bedford Co. TN living with his mother and brother Charlie Tucker. I have been told that he was in ARK after that. So if any one can help me find James I would apprecaite it. Thanks Patti
