    3. ----- Forwarded Message ----- From: diane <[email protected]> To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, August 17, 2011 9:35 AM Subject: [NewRiver] Ronald G Spangler, born in Pocahontas VA   Ronald ‍Spangler Sr.    NORFOLK - Loving husband and father Ronald G. ‍Spangler Sr., 87, passed away Aug. 8, 2011 at the Veterans Administration Hospital Hospice Unit in Hampton, Va. Born in Pocahontas , Va., he was the son of the late William Roscoe ‍Spangler and Lena Patrick ‍Spangler and the brother of the late Julian ‍Spangler.    Decorated veteran of World War II, Ronald served our country proudly. Private First Class Ronald Gayle ‍Spangler served the United States Marine Corps with the 1st and 3rd Marine Division from 1942 to 1947. Serving tours in Guadalcanal, Siapan, Tinian and participated in the occupation of China. After returning home to Norfolk in 1947 Ronald met and married his beautiful wife, Elizabeth, and raised his family. Ronald retired after 38 years of public service at PWC NOB in Norfolk. Ronald’s (or “Pop” as many knew him) greatest loves in life were his family, fishing, hunting and helping his friends and neighbors with their plumbing and heating problems (many times free of charge) for as long as he was physically able. Dad was awarded the Wavy-TV Good Neighbor Award on Sept. 22, 2003.    Ronald or “Pop” is survived by the love of his life and wife of 64 years, Elizabeth S. ‍Spangler; two children, Ronald G. ‍Spangler Jr. of Virginia Beach and Sally S. Mazie of Norfolk; four grandchildren, Christina S. Vance of Howardsville, Va., Amy B. Strom of Raleigh, N.C., Caroline S. Hairfield of Hanover, Va., and Mary B. Phipps of Norfolk; as well as five great-grandchildren, Jeffrey, 21, Ronald, 16, Christian, 12, Charlotte, 6, Jack, 4, and Acara, 18. He was a loving and wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and friend whose smiling face, quick wit and giving personality will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.    Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, in Forest Lawn Cemetery, 8100 Granby St., in Norfolk.
