    3. Hi, wanted to tell all...what a wonderful group we have ...I too have had some bad times, but I love genealogy and writing and preserving history. I would be glad to send a password HOWEVER...after my last experience...I am going to seal my web sites so no one can get at them no copy etc (and if ever violated it is supposed to leave some tracks.. ...I need to talk to my daughter (who lives next door to me.here) I would like to store her phone number with one person to call her in case I am traveling, with Mom in Montana I go as often as I can...have cell phone that gets all my e-mails . Gail is that o.k.? I always have a duplicate and slightly different for emergencies... and a laptop with me.(I learned that through the unfair rule of life! I am so thankful to find a great group of people....Sincerely Jo Ann Scott > -----Original Message----- > From: looking4myfamily@ymail.com > Sent: Thu, 19 Jul 2012 19:31:52 -0700 (PDT) > To: tttp@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [TTTP] Question on site passwords > > I want to say that I know that this is a great group and I appreciate the > chance given to me to learn webpaging and how it have given me more > confidence in myself as a person.  I am an artist with a paintbrush > however my canvas is a web page.  I am learning more each day and going > forward with that knowledge.  Ps Jus got to work on that spelling thing. > heheheheheheheheheheeh::)) > > > Jeannie in Kentucky > God Bless > God Speed > kymonroe@rootsweb.com > www.trailstothepast.org > Cherrish you Freedom, Support your Military, Homeland people in service > of others.  Each of us have a great gift given to us, Freedom. > Vote, Worship, Speech, Pursuit of Happiness.  We  are all Equal and > Remember to see your neighbor as your Equal. > > From: Gail Kilgore <gail.kilgore@gmail.com> > To: tttp@rootsweb.com > Sent: Thursday, July 19, 2012 9:19 PM > Subject: Re: [TTTP] Question on site passwords > > Well, we had one member who tried very hard to destroy us, but the > majority > pitched in and picked up the pieces and we all moved forward.  We have > learned a lot since those days and "trust" isn't as easy to come by as it > was when we started.  But, I will say this, there is not one person in > this > project that I have a doubt about and know that they are here because > they > want to work with a great group pf people, without a dictator, and doing > what they love most... genealogy and sharing. > > Gail > > On Thu, Jul 19, 2012 at 5:51 PM, Charlie Vines > <charlie.vines@gmail.com>wrote: > >> This has been a good discussion with some points that I have not >> considered. >> I figured that thought had gone into this, but wanted to bring it up >> just >> in >> case. >> >> At 55 I should know better, but I still operate from the viewpoint that >> people are trustworthy until they prove themselves otherwise.  Works >> most >> of >> the time, but been burned a few times.  In an endeavor like this, I >> think I >> would agree with Jeanne to be more cautious. >> >> >> Charlie Vines >> charlie.vines@gmail.com >> 112 chickens for my birthday - 3. This has been a good discussion with some points that I have not considered. I figured that thought had gone into this, but wanted to bring it up just in case. At 55 I should know better, but I still operate from the viewpoint that people are trustworthy until they prove themselves otherwise. Works most of the time, but been burned a few times. In an endeavor like this, I think I would agree with Jeanne to be more cautious. Charlie Vines charlie.vines@gmail.com 112 chickens for my birthday - https://www.mygfa.org/charliesbday/ -----Original Message----- From: tttp-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:tttp-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jeanne Hicks Sent: Thursday, July 19, 2012 7:11 PM To: tttp@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TTTP] Question on site passwords I think we do need to do some analysing and make definite plans, but I hesitate to suggest giving your passwords to another person. In the event that something should happen to someone, Gail can contact Gerhardt (at accounts) and they will reissue new passwords to gail for all of the sites that person has in trails. However, the passwords/info for guestbooks, counters, and search engines aren't managed in the same manner. My caution is based upon when I first started with Trails, Diane was my state coordinator for NC and I trusted her. My trust has been destroyed in her, but if she had all my passwords.... as it was, she deleted some of my sites when she left and I had to restore them. I can only cringe at what she might have done to some of my other sites if she had the passwords to them... I guess I am only being cautious. But in the event that something were to happen to me, all of my passwords, site info, pictures, everything is on a series of flash drives and they will be mailed to Gail. I'm hoping that I can get an external hard drive in the near future. At that point, it would be a single external hard drive which would be mailed to Gail with all of the data for my sites, loaded and not yet loaded. Passwords, etc are all included in that data. Just my two cents worth... 3. I'm working on the sites, not ready to go live with them yet though. I have put my name on the indexes of SC & PA, so that any Jeannie won't be bothered with those submissions. I plan to do a lot more over the course of the next couple of days. I got hauled off to Walmart today, so I'm just getting to start work on anything for this evening. This has been a really busy week for me, I shall get through it though and get a handle on everything over the course of the next few days. I'm locked out of my identity on this computer (if somebody has a password crack, I sure would appreciate it's use <LOL>) I have several hundred disks of articles that either I have written or am reading, and I'm going through those disks. I'm also hoping I will find that elusive password. Actually, what happened is I changed the password, but this keyboard isn't the one I used for 10 years and I don't know where my fingers ended up, but they weren't where they were supposed to be. It has caused a major pia. Anyway, the sites are moving right along and as soon as I have a skeleton done for each of them, I'll send the links. 3. I think what Charlie is saying that if something happens to him, the passwords and sign-ins are all with his district admin. It would be safer that way, and make more sense than having panic when someone is unexpectedely gone. It should be done that way. The turn over would be easy. But, I will say this, there is not one person in this project that I have a doubt about and know that they are here because they want to work with a great group pf people, without a dictator, and doing what they love most... genealogy and sharing. 3. I think we do need to do some analysing and make definite plans, but I hesitate to suggest giving your passwords to another person. 3. This brings me back to the passing of Daryl. He had the keys to a lot of things for Trails and we worked around the problem but it didn't happen over night. The only thing we did loose was the mail lists that Daryl had in his name. Rootsweb is great working with me in getting new passwords when someone [Daryl] passes or when someone leaves the project. Colleen has most of my passwords and can keep moving if something happens to me. Do I have Colleen's passwords... No. I have the keys to the server and Gerry and Colleen both have those. Billie may have them too. I noticed that we have a special project that is not listed in the special projects. What happened to the old photos project? I believe it is still on the server but if it isn't advertised it is not going to get used. I have uploaded three Texas Counties and in one county used Charlie's template but revised the page a little. Kerr, Rusk, and Gillespie are online. Think I have a couple more to do, working around in the hill country and the German settlements. Katie, have you adde any sites? I have ePassBook, which stores my passwords for me, you can get it for free and register it for a very low fee or use it like freeware and the seconds it takes to open increase as time goes by. 3. Would it be appropriate to send my passwords up the 'chain of command' for safe keeping (in my case, Linda)? The reason I ask if two weeks ago my father-in-law passed away in less than 2 hours. His wife is now working to get her life in order with his passing. Fortunately, he keep everything organized (account numbers, userid/passwords, etc). This has got me thinking (again, go through the process with each passing) about making sure my records are well organized for Theresa and my children. Then I thought about us. I was thinking of sending Linda all my info for my sites. That includes my password for my tttp sites plus userid/passwords for my search field accounts and my counter accounts. It will include info on a guestbook if I add one. With current commitments to the group that is 33 userid/passwords (for my counties) and an untold number for the territories (potentially well over a hundred (a project that will be much larger than I originally thought) which I would send the national directors). My second question: 'Is there a plan like this in place all the way up the 'chain of command'? Just wondering.
