Smith, farmer, Youngstown, is one of the pioneers of Vigo county, and was born in Kentucky, August 15, 1811. His parents came to Kentucky in an early day. His father is one of the men that came there with Daniel Boone. They came to Indiana and stopped in Lawrence county nine years. Then they came to Vigo county in the fall of 1822, and settled three miles east of Prairieton, where his father William died at the age of eighty-eight. Mr. Smith's mother was Katie Spoon, who was a native of Germany, and died in her sixty-sixth year. Mr. Smith was joined in marriage March 19, 1834, to Mary A. Tryon, daughter of J. Tryon, who was an early settler of this county. She was born in Hamilton county, Ohio, in 1816, and died June 19, 1869. He afterwards married Mrs. Elizabeth Buchanan. Mr. Smith's father was an old revolutionary soldier, and was also in the war of 1812. Mr. Smith has nine children by his former wife: Levina, Henry A., James A., William I., Oliver, Delila, wife of L. Joslin; Robert G., Green, and Matilda, wife of John Hudson. Mr. Smith can remember a great deal about the early settlement of Vigo county. He has killed many a deer from his own door. He can make and play a violin, and all his brothers and father could play it. his ancestors were from England. He helped to raise many a log cabin, and took an active part in the imporvement of the county. He is the owner of as fine a farm as there is in Vigo county, and it has been the result of many a hard year's work." Vigo county is a hotbed of Tryons, all descendants of a John Tryon and Rhoda Lucas of Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut. Noah Tryon was a revolutionary war veteran who never went back to CT "after he had seen Paree" - he went to Ohio. He and his can be found all over Ohio, but the bunch you want went through Hamilton county, Ohio, Dearborn county, Indiana, then to Vigo. Noah evidently lured his brother Jeremiah west as well. "J. Tryon" is probably Jeremiah Tryon, who seems to have owned a hotel in Lockport, Vigo, IN, and was a trustee (Jerry Tryon) of the Lockport Christian church. All this per History of Vigo County, pp. 408/9. If you go to my web-site, The Tryon Union, you can browse through the family, but without Mary A. It turns out she is a new discovery I didn't even recognize until this morning. I had collected voluminous information on Vigo county a couple of weeks ago, just before the holidays, and had not really studied it until I got your message this AM and decided to browse through what I had collected. Eureka! However, this was the only reference to Mary A that I found. She is not in any other records. Perhaps Hamilton county, Ohio, would be fruitful. If you go to the Tryon Union site, look on the left at a menu and choose Family Trees. A set of windows will appear - look at the big one to the right and scroll down to "Noah 1772-, who married Prudence Jones..." and click on it. A screen will come up with NOAH on it. Click on his father John Tryon and when that screen comes up you will see Jeremiah as one of John's and Rhoda's children. He is who I suspect is the father of your Mary Ann. You can explore to your heart's delight from there. http://www.tryon-union.com/ Regards, Dan Brevik
