Information on Socrates H Tryon - PART 7 (THE LAST) ********************************************************** 17 Subject: Socrates Tryon Date: Sun, 07 Jun 1998 22:35:26 -0400 From: Dennis J Brevik <dbrevik@ix.netcom.com> To: Larry Bradshaw <llbradsh@iastate.edu> I have received some correspondence that undoubtedly will interest you. The first EMail was: Subject: Tryon in Oregon Date: Wed, 03 Jun 1998 21:18:34 -0700 From: Toni Foster <bbschool@outlawnet.com> Organization: Black Butte School District To: dbrevik@ix.netcom.com Is there a tie between New York Tryons and Socrates Tryon who homesteaded in Lake Oswego, Oregon in 1846. The area adjacent to his land was called Palatine Hill - another New York Schlorie name? Toni Foster bbschool@outlawnet.com I responded: Subject: Re: Tryon in Oregon Date: Fri, 05 Jun 1998 01:25:34 -0400 From: Dennis J Brevik <dbrevik@ix.netcom.com> To: bbschool@outlawnet.com Not to my knowledge. Socrates was born in VT and removed to Iowa. He is known to have revisited his parents in Vermont occasionally. From Iowa he went to Hawaii for his health, returned to Iowa then took the Oregon Trail to Oregon. I don't know of any of his branch settling in New York State, although with 13 siblings it certainly is possible. His father Jesse, and a couple of his brothers joined him in Oregon, and also in the northwestern-most part of California. I have often wondered about the Lake Oswego in Oregon, but can't seem to make a connection. It could be a coincidence, I suppose. Are you researching any Tryons? Dan Brevik And she responded..................... Actually, my students researched the 1709-10 Great Palatine Migration to America for National History Day. In that research they passed through information about Tryon, New York and the naval stores. The combination of Tryon , New York; Oswego lake nearby, and the Palatines lead me to think about Socrates Tryon. My real contact with him is that I lived in the house Dr. Socrates Tryon built on the Willamette River in Oswego, Oregon. (Name later changed to Lake Oswego) Interestingly the hill near his homestead was called Palatine Hill. This seemed like too many coincidences so I thought I throw the thought out for consideration. Socrates built his salt box house, shipped around the horn from New England, in 1847, a year after Dr. John McLaughlin built his house in 1846 in Oregon Cuty, just up river about 6-8 miles. I believe I still have the deed. My great uncle Peter Stampher, from Austria, bought from Tryon in 1887 or so..... Clackamas County, Oregon may have some information on file also.. Please fill me in on the Great Palatine Migration, as I know nothing about it. What naval stores. Gosh, I have a lot of questions <g>. For your information, the American Tryons uniformly loathe Governor Tryon, who is a very remote relation at best. Tryon counties in NC and NY have naught to do with American Tryons. > > I believe I still have the deed. My great uncle Peter Stampher, from > Austria, bought from Tryon in 1887 or so..... I haven't gotten around to Clackamas county yet - too many for one man. The Tryons were nomadic and left their spoor in county after county... One mystery that could possibly be solved out there is the parentage of Jesse Tryon (Soc's father) who died out there. He hailed originally from Glastonbury CT and was possibly progeny of Dr. Joseph Tryon of that town. For your information are attached the letters of Socrates as a text file. Do they shed any light for you?? ************ Let me know if you would like to follow up on this? Dan *********************************************************8 Final comments as of today, June 8, 1998 Note that I goofed in stating that Jesse I died in Oregon. It was Jesse II. That's what comes from trusting my memory! This is still ongoing, but I wanted to share this interesting material with everyone. Dan
