This is PART 3A of the EMail correspondence between me and the Bradshaws regarding Socrates H Tryon *********************************************************************************************** 6 Subject: Tryons Date: Fri, 3 Apr 1998 11:04:31 EST From: Gsbradshaw <Gsbradshaw@aol.com> To: dbrevik@ix.netcom.com Dean Dennis or Dan???, (I just noticed that you are listed as Dennis in your email and then you signed your name Dan. Are you one in the same....or are there two people using the same email?) We really enjoyed your response to what we had written to you. I am sending records from Pawlet, VT--100 Years and Cemetery Inscriptions - Pawlet, VT and also a copy of the copy of the article about Socrates Tryon published in the Oregon Journal and the one about Dennis Tryon. These two articles really made us grow in our appreciation of what pioneer families went through. Some of my comments about what I had down & your comments will be things that I gained from the enclosed articles.. When it is quoted that Jesse was from Rutland, VT.....I believe that he was from Rutland Co., VT, and not from the town of Rutland. I found no reference to him other than in Pawlet which is a part of Rutland Co. In the 1790 census there is a Elijah Tryon listed also in Rutland Co, Westhaven Township. I would like to explore history books to see if there is anything written about Elijah.....maybe Jesses father? Brother? And I find that sometimes articles will include other family members and their backgrounds. that might give a clue to who Jesses father was. Will try to explore that the next time I go to a historical library. Elisha is again listed this time in Bennington Co, Manchester Twn and there is a Calvin in Bennington Co, Beadsboro Twn. In 1800 there is a Elisha Tryon living in Rutland Co, Danby Township. Who??? A son f Elijah? Then in 1810 census shows only Elijah and Jesse in Rutland Co--same townships as in 1800. Then in the 1820 census, Jesse I has moved to Granville Twn, Washington Co, NY (just over the state line from Pawlet, VT). Both Jesse Is son Dave & Jesse (II) Jr are listed in Pawlet. Elijah is still in Westhaven and their is a Cauncey Tryon in Danby Twnship, Rutland Co, VT. In the 1830 census, I couldnt find Jesse I listed but a David Tryon is listed as living in Granville Twn, Washington Co, NY and I am assuming that possibly his parents are living with him. There is a Jesse living in Oneida Co, Vernon Twn of NY but I think he was from another line. Jesse (II) Jr was still living in Pawlet. Elijah was still in West Haven, along with Jason....a son of Elijah??? There are other Tryons listed in other counties: James, Alvin, Chauncey, Elisha, Truman, Jeremiah. Apparently after Jesse Is death, his wife Jemima moved back to Pawlet as she is listed in the 8140 census. A Samuel lived in Westhaven Twn, Westhaven. No Elijah listed...could he have died??? I dont have the VT 1850 census records but am wondering if Jemina left Pawlet and was living elsewhere when she died as the cemetery doesnt list her name....unless she remarried. I doubt that William was a son of Jesse and that was mainly because he was not listed in the article about Pawlet. Could he have been a son of Elijah or Elisha?? Between the information from Pawlet - 100 Years, the Pawlet Cemetery Records, the 1850 Iowa Census, and the personal information, I feel that I have the children listed fairly accurately for Jesse II and Laura. Iowa, Linn Co 1850 census lists the following; Laura, 57,f, VT; Ephraim G., 26, VT; Dorlan,25, VT; Jese (III), 23, VT; George, 16 VT; Francis, 10, VT; John, 9, IA. Apparently some of the children were listed twice in the census. We know from the census records in OR and from the letters Socrates sent that Jesse II, Socrates, David, Dorlan, & Jesse III had gone west via covered wagon in 1849. Jesse II died in 2/9/1850. Davids wife Huldah was listed with her parents in Linn Co, IA in 1850 so she apparently left shortly after that to join her husband in CA -- see article. It would be a possibility that the some of them returned when their father died for a short time....but Im doubtful of that because of info in Socratess letters and I am guessing that Laura just listed all of her unmarried children?????? It was interesting that you had found Frances Tryon and Socrates Jr listed in the 1850 CT census. From the letters Socrates wrote to her and from the newspaper article about Socrates, we know that she went to the east coast, went by boat to Panama, cross the land portion and went up the west coast by boat. Larry had a book from ISUS (IA State University - he teaches there) telling about the people going west using this route. And there is another article about the Tryon State Park that indicates that Socrates Sr. went that way, too, but we know that wasnt right because of his letters...they went over land. I have the Family Tree Maker Deluxe Edition III. Have appreciated it for the ability to search...but just wish that their additional cd disks were more reasonable. Wow, this should give you a little bit to chew on. Were still working through these letters from Socrates....many are hard to read. Well try to get them copied but will also send you what we have typed up....of what we think they said???!!!! Until next time......Glenda 4 (for)) Larry (2) P.S. Ive added some notes to the end of Dennis article that may clarify some of the things & corrects some dates CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS - PAWLET, VERMONT BY MARGARET JENKS FOLIO of 59 V46 1935 P 64 Blossom Cemetery is located in the northwest corner of Pawlet.
