From what I can figure out, there are several early groups of Tryon's in NY. 1. The Greene Co. NY group - Benjamin/Jochem/Peter et al 2. Orange Co NY group - Eluid 3. Columbia/Albany Co group - John Tryon and sons Wright and Solomon 4. A Thomas Tryon, who may or may be not be connected to the Orange Co. group since a Thomas appears in early records there. - The reason I am looking at these four groups is to try to explain a couple of oddities. The Hopkins and Wing lines allied with the Greene Co. NY group in MI (St. Joseph Co. MI), were in Washtenaw Co. MI before they were in St. Joseph Co. MI. I looked at Washtenaw Co. MI and found the following widow/old maid Tryons. 1. Lamira Phebe (Cooper) Tryon who married Elkanah Downer in 1845. She was 38 in 1850, born in 1812 in Addison Co. VT, but was probably in NY by 1830, as some of her siblings show up there. 2. Mary Tryan age 84, born NY with a Catherine Tryan, age 60 b. NY. They might be connected, as they were in Lodi and Lodi is where the Downers lived. Judging from the age span, it could be three different generations? Is there a Mary who married into any of the above NY families during the mid 1780's or 90's? My records don't show any. There isn't any Catherine's except for the Catherine who was the wife of Jochem/John Tryon in Greene Co. NY, she was born in the 1740's. Besides, her mother in law was Elizabeth. 3. A Helen Tryon b. 1837 MI was living with the Blewett family. I can find no MI connection between the two families, however. Also, the Tryon men listed on the 1840 census with dau under 5 are easily tracable as both are written up in county histories. Rodulphus Tryon of Washtenaw Co. was in Mass until 1810, as were his desc. (obviously).
