    1. William Tryons of Connecticut
    2. In early August I posted a document discussing my confusion over the several William Tryons born in Connecticut in the mid 1700s. I was very pleased to receive an immediate, detailed response from Dan Brevik. I would now like to try to take the discussion a step farther and see if we can reach a consensus on the identity of the parents of my gggg grandfather, William Tryon who died in Farmington, Connecticut on January 14, 1821. First my answers to questions Dan Brevik asked. 1. Dan said he did not have a record of William, son of William and Phebe Bow. William is listed along with seven other children in the Connecticut Historical Society manuscript. He is also in the Bidwell Genealogy. I'll send copies of these documents to anyone who wants to see them. 2. Dan said that the Eastbury Church records, p. 80, show William Tryon m. Anna Hurlburt on May 4, 1777.. I've carefully checked the copies of Buckingham-Eastbury records and can't find a mention of this marriage. Again, the Bidwell genealogy says that the William Tryon, Jr., who died in Glastonbury on August 31, 1825, married Sarah Bidwell at New Haven one week later than the above date. The genealogy also gives William and Phebe as the parents of William, Jr. I have a copy of the Wethersfield Church Record showing the marriage of William Tryon and Anna Hurlbut, "both of Wethersfield" on May 9, 1784. This date is consistent with the births of the children of William of Farmington. William of Glastonbury had children born prior to this date. 3. Dan misunderstood my statement about adding Sally, Anna & Prudence as children of Benjamin Tryon and Rebecca Hurlbut. . They along with still another William are the children of William of Farmington, who I conjecture to be the son of Benjamin and Rebecca. This is what I know about William of Farmington (1752-1821). His first wife died December 14, 1815 in Farmington. Her obit in the Hartford Courant gives her name as Anna and her age as 63. (Born 1852). William married in 1816 Clarissa (Bodwell) Phelps, the widow of Chandler Conway Phelps. William died January 14, 1821 in Farmington. His obituary said he was 66, which would put his birth year as 1754. The obit from the January 21, 1821 issue of the Hartford Times: "At Farmington, on the 14th, Mr. William Tryon, aged 66, an old revolutionary soldier. He entered the service of his country early in 1775. In 1776, he was made a prisoner after the retreat from New York, near Harlem heights, was confined in New York as a prisoner about six months, and finally arrived at his home, then in Wethersfield, with only skin and bones. He again entered the service, and took his discharge at the peace in 1783." Obituaries were also printed in eight other Connecticut newspapers but the ones I looked at said little more than that he died in Farmington, served in the war, and was an honest man. Seven of the eight gave his age as 66 and the Republican Advocate said he was 62 when he died. The children of William and Anna are: 1. Sally b. July 19, 1785 m. Salmon Way, October 1803 at Farmington FCC. Sally d. March 12, 1868 at Stockton, Ill. Salmon d. August 9, 1841 at Alden, NY. Sally m (2) Oliver Standert. Sally had 13 children listed in the Way Genealogy, all born in New York bet. 1804 and 1830. The Way Genealogy gives Salmon's name as Solomon and says Sally was born in Litchfield, the daughter of John Tryon. They obviously have her confused with John Tryon's Sally who, according to probate papers, was in Litchfield in 1818 "taking care of Mother" following the death of her father. 2. Anna b. 1788 m. Charles Brewster December 29, 1806 at West Avon Congregational Church on Aug. 14, 1844 near New Canton in Pike County, Illinois. These are my ggg grandparents. Anna and Charles had two children who survived childhood: Lucy Ann, b. 1809 and Charles Tryon Brewster, b. September 11, 1811 in Gates, Genesee County, NY. (My gg grandfather) 3. Prudence m. Luther Ranney at Farmington FCC July 16, 1818 and lived in Sheffield, Mass. 4. William was living in Hillsdale, Columbia County, N.Y. in 1821. (Not far from Sheffield) Sally, Anna, Prudence and William were all baptized together December 8, 1799 at Farmington FCC.. The above information is from the Barbour Collection, the Brewster Genealogy, the Way Genealogy, and probate papers at the Connecticut State Library. I conjecture that the Benjamin Tryon and Rebecca Hurlbut are the parents of William of Farmington based on the fact that they had a son named William born in Wethersfied September 3, 1752. (Wethersfield church records and vital records). Again, this William has been incorrectly identified as the Glastonbury William who died in 1825. Revolutionary War records show that William of Farmington was one of two William Tryons from Wethersfield who served in the war. I can't find a war service record for a William Tryon from Glastonbury. Can we now be fairly certain that William of Glastonbury (1752-1825) is not the son of Benjamin and Rebecca of Wethersfield? William either took a couple of years off his age and was really 68 when he died or else the family member who submitted the obit to the newspapers didn't know his correct age. His application for a Revolutionary War Pension May 21, 1818 gives his age as 65. This is consistent with the September 3, 1752 birth date found in the Wethersfield Church and Vital Records. Please forgive me if I seem to be making too much of this discussion. But I want to know who my ancestors are and I have been stumped by the identity of these William Tryons. What amazes me more than anything else is that you folks want to sort out these Tryons and have a vast amount of information on them. Isn't this a wonderful technology that allows us to share information so efficiently? I noticed in the Tryon Union that there is a 1988 letter from Greg Burton offering information on a branch descending from William Tryon and Anna Hurlbut. I would love to see this letter. Can I copy be mailed to me? Jon B. Harden 16 Oak Ridge Lane West Hartford, CT 06107 Thanks again for your interest and help. Jon Harden
