Didn't make it by the end of the weekend, but here is an overview of where I am/who I'm looking for. Adelia Ann Tryon is my Gr Gr grandmother. She married my gr gr grandfather, Lyman Chaffee in Hillsdale Co. MI on Jan 23, 1844. She lists her age as 16 on the certificate, but I think she was lying her age to be married. Both the 1850 and 1860 census are consistant with her being born in 1829 or so. Witnesses to the wedding are Daniel Beeman, Lyman's brother-in-law, and Benjamin Tryon. There are two Benjamin Tryon's in MI at the time, both seemingly connected to each other. Both are also residing in Counties that the newlyweds lived in during the first part of their marraige. To keep them straight, I refer to them as B.P., short for Benjamin Peter, and Benjamin. There is a Benjamin Peter Tryon living in St. Joseph Co. MI, who alternately went by Benjamin or Peter. St. Joseph Co. MI is where Lyman and Adelia lived at the time of the birth of their second child, Peter in 1846. Peter is an unusual name for the Chaffee family and I always assumed it came from the Tryon line. This B.P. Tryon seems allied to the White family, as a Fanny White is living with him in the 1850 census, and he is living with an Amos White in 1860. They could also be allied to the Hopkins family, as the widow of B.P.'s son Henry, Martha (Wing) Tryon, married 2nd, Howard Hopkins and he raised Henry's dau Henrietta. By 1850, Lyman and Adelia were in Allegan Co. MI, where the other Benjamin lived. (Dan and Don think that the two men are father and son). County histories indicate that this Benjamin is a brother -in-law to Calvin Lewis. That means that Calvin's wife Sally was probably a Tryon before the marraige. Sally has died by the 1850 census, however, and Benjamin is living on property probably owned by Nathaniel and Hannah (Cooley) Goodell or one of their siblings. Calvin and his brother ran a hotel. (important later). Shortly after the 1860 census, the family appears in Kent Co. MI, along with Howard Hopkins and Philitus Wood. Philitus was living with Lyman and Adelia on the 1850 census, but I don't know his connection to the family yet. Also in Kent Co. MI was a William A. Tryon, b. 1799 in NY. I don't know his connection to Lyman and Adelia, either, if any. By the 1870 census, two of Lyman's sons, WILLIAM HENRY and PETER were in Newaygo Co. MI. They were running a hotel. In the 1830's, Calvin Lewis had gone up to Newaygo but returned after 6 months. I don't know if they are connected events or not. Right now, I have more questions than answers. Looking at the deeds and probate info, a couple of questions come to mind. 1. Have you connected the William A Tryon from the Guardianship rolls to anybody. There was a William A. Tryon in Kent Co. MI. He was born April 12, 1799. I assumes he was a son of either David or John Tryon, since he gives his birth as New Lebanon, NY. However..... 2. I wonder if the Oliver Palmer in deed T-12 could really be the Olive Palmer mentioned in the probate of Benjamin Tryon in 1832. 3. Sarles/Sears connection - Do you know if there is such a connection? The reason is kind of long and complicated - Phebe Lamira (Cooper) Tryon's younger sister married a Corydon Sailes/Sarles/Seares. In 1830, Corydon Searles shows up in Essex Co. NY.
It would be nice to see who these Palmers are and to see if they connect to the Joseph Palmer family of Madison Co. NY. Either the Tryon's or one of the allied lines married into that family. (Can't find my notes at the moment - but I think the woman involved was a dau of Joseph Palmer.) Hi Folks, I am trying to piece together the life of the above member of the TRYON Family. He is a descendant, in the 8th generation, of William TRYON of Bibury, Gloucestershire, Eng. and Wethersfield, CT. He does not appear in the 1881 Census of N. Crosby which shows the following family: George TRYON, b. 1843, ON + Catharine [E. HORNING], b. 1849, of Dutch ethnicity ....Victoria, b.1871 ....Viola, b.1873 ....Edward, b.1876 ....Clista, b.1878 ....Fredrick, b. Jul 1880 (of whom more later) The first record I have of him is in the Perth [ON] Courier, Geneal. Abstracts, p.455, Marriages, on 17 Jan 1908 when, it is reported, he m. Laura Irene BRAY of Almonte [ON]. His place of residence in the article is Saskatoon, with his parents from Westport (N. Crosby) ON. The next contact is when his brother Fred dies in Calgary about 5 Feb 1909, at age 32, "From an affection <sic> of the throat which had been troubling him for some years", and his remains are returned to Saskatoon for burial from Charles' home. Fred had married Mary ROSS in 1905 in Niagara Falls where he had been employed in the printer trade. They had a daughter. Charles was then the proprietor of the Saskatoon "Capital", the local newspaper. The Henderson directory of Saskatoon in 1910 indicates that he was also the manager of "Capital Printing" and resided in the Baldwin Block (an apartment). Since Fred married 3 years before him, he was probably born after his brother Fred and, will turn up in the 1891 census (due in any month now from Ottawa <g>.) I would really appreciate it if someone in Saskatoon could convey a copy of this message to Maxwell A and Judith A Tryon at 1813 37th St (382-3807. Maxwell is 1C1R to Charles. Has anybody been able to connect this name to the Durham Tryon's? As there was a John Tryon in Madison Co. NY in 1830, where Sally Tryon supposedly married Calvin Lewis, and then a John Trin in Kalamazoo Co. MI after that (1840?), and since Benjamin's widowed dau-in-law married into the Hopkins family, I thought it might be worth a look. The marraige record for this couple in the Presby church in Greenville, NY places his location as Durham. That is where Asa Tryon of CT settled. Vicki
Found another name allied to the Tryon family like Rosa, in fact is some places it in Roosa, at least where it connects to the Titus line. -- (Funny how that named crept in twice in two days in Tryon conversations I had). Reform Dutch Church, Catskill NY - Oct 10, 1785, Rebecca Roos was baptized - Father Abraham Roos, Mother Lena Roos WITNESSES PETRIS TREYON, RACHEL TRYON (Benjamin Peter's parents?) This is the same church that Benjamin Tryon married Susannah Palmer in 1800. The Titus/Roosa marraige was in Ulster Co. NY, right next door, so to speak. I wonder if that is why Titus and Tryon's appear together in Deeds in Greene Co. NY - the Roos/Roosa family. I would like to include a short description from all interested parties regarding their specific interests in the Tryon family so I can post it to the website. It would be included in the section "Contributors". I'm hoping that encourages casual browsers to contact anyone who appears to be studying their line, thus getting another source of information for each of us. Frankly, I don't know what kind of format to use, so you're on your own and I'll take whatever you give. Dan
From what I can figure out, there are several early groups of Tryon's in NY. 1. The Greene Co. NY group - Benjamin/Jochem/Peter et al 2. Orange Co NY group - Eluid 3. Columbia/Albany Co group - John Tryon and sons Wright and Solomon 4. A Thomas Tryon, who may or may be not be connected to the Orange Co. group since a Thomas appears in early records there. - The reason I am looking at these four groups is to try to explain a couple of oddities. The Hopkins and Wing lines allied with the Greene Co. NY group in MI (St. Joseph Co. MI), were in Washtenaw Co. MI before they were in St. Joseph Co. MI. I looked at Washtenaw Co. MI and found the following widow/old maid Tryons. 1. Lamira Phebe (Cooper) Tryon who married Elkanah Downer in 1845. She was 38 in 1850, born in 1812 in Addison Co. VT, but was probably in NY by 1830, as some of her siblings show up there. 2. Mary Tryan age 84, born NY with a Catherine Tryan, age 60 b. NY. They might be connected, as they were in Lodi and Lodi is where the Downers lived. Judging from the age span, it could be three different generations? Is there a Mary who married into any of the above NY families during the mid 1780's or 90's? My records don't show any. There isn't any Catherine's except for the Catherine who was the wife of Jochem/John Tryon in Greene Co. NY, she was born in the 1740's. Besides, her mother in law was Elizabeth. 3. A Helen Tryon b. 1837 MI was living with the Blewett family. I can find no MI connection between the two families, however. Also, the Tryon men listed on the 1840 census with dau under 5 are easily tracable as both are written up in county histories. Rodulphus Tryon of Washtenaw Co. was in Mass until 1810, as were his desc. (obviously).
I've sent this letter to both you and the mailing list, so you can probably pick up the address from there and add it to your address book. That Sally (Tryon) Lewis is a sister to the Benjamin Tryon of Allegan Co. MI is a given, and is stated in all sorts of county histories. According to her grave marker, she was born 14 Jan 1813. Adelia Tryon is a little harder to track down. All I have connecting her to Benjamin Tryon is the fact that a Benjamin Tryon witnessed her wedding in Hillsdale Co. MI in 1844. Also, she and her husband Lyman seemed to follow Benjamin Tryon into Allegan Co. MI, after living in St. Joseph Co. MI for the first few years of their marraige. She was born circa 1829 and died sometime after 1860, when her last child was born. Deed records seem to put the date closer to 1862, but since deeds can lay around for a while before they are acted on and/or not get filed, I sometimes distrust the dates on them. I haven't found her grave marker yet. Since Sally married a man from Madison Co. NY, I took a long look at the William there who died in 1833. I suspected at one point that he may be the William of Greene Co. NY who was born to John and Catherine (Van Slyck) Tryon. Now, I just don't know. The William of Madison Co. NY died in 1833 would have a dau the right age to be Adelia, but some researchers but him in the Saybrook group. Tryon & Fanny White I suspect that Benjamin Peter Tryon may be the Peter Tryon living in Mendon TWP in 1860 with the Amos White family. He died before the 1870 census. Another tie in for Adelia with this group is the fact that Henry's dau, Henrietta, seems to be travelling with Lyman and Adelia, or at least living in the same area. Henry's wife, Martha (Wing) Tryon m2 Howard Hopkins, and we find them living in the same TWP in Kent Co. MI with Lyman and Adelia's grown kids after Adelia's death. The 1862 deed places Lyman and Adelia as residents of that county. Also in the TWP is Philitus Woods, who was living with Lyman and Adelia in 1850 (I have no idea how he fits in yet). The Wing and Hopkins families were in Washtenaw Co. before they were in St. Joseph Co. MI. Lyman's people were in Hillsdale/Lenawee Co. before St. Joseph. Several Tryon widows and orphans appear in these counties and I am also trying to track them down to prove how they connect. I can send you my MI database, if you would like.
