Most of the Vigo tryons appear to be descendants of Noah Tryon (1772- ), son of John Tryon + Rhoda Lucas of Middletown. Noah went west early in life and had a pretty big family. I suspect that Rowland's presence in the same county may be more a coincidence than not. They have remote common ancestry - specifically, their common ancestor is William who came from Bibury. > > RE: Charles E. What concerns me is the VR entry that says Edwin C, then parenthetically adds Charles E - are they the same? Or is the clerk confused? Or what? You have certainly whetted my appetite for that Berrien History!!! Dan
The articles in the Berrien Co. MI history says the whole family was in Indiana before the move. That would explain John's presence there in 1838. He probably married his girlfriend and started a family before coming to MI to join the rest of the family. I could never identify the county, so that gives me a location to look. I do have a John married to a Nancy Soesbee in Vigo Co. Indiana Jan 18, 1835 - CD 228 FTM. The date is odd though - Either the date for the marraige is wrong, or the 1850 census is wrong as to John's age. TRYON John * marr. SANDERLIN Robert * 12-Oct-1837 1840 census had some families already in Vigo, so it might be two families - like cousins/brothers traveling together. Or possibly a connection to NY thru the Sunderlin family. In 1850, a Nelson Tryon age 23 b. NY is a laborer on the farm of Noah Sundalun 35 VT (on page 160 Westfield TWP) RE: Charles E. Tryon - William Henry's write-up uses Charles E, and since he lived at home with William and Mary (according to article), I have always used Charles Edwin as his first name, noting differences. But then, who am I to talk. My grandfather went by George, G.L., George Lucian, Lucian George and Lucian. My mother didn't know his first name was George, but I finally traced his birth cert - George LUCIEN Hall, born in MI in 1867. Most of his census's say NY. Just double checking that this info is "out". Found it about the time I went on vacation. 1. Losee connection to the Tryon family Benjamin Tryon of St. Joseph Co. MI had a gr nephew Peter, who married Francis Losee (Lossee) in Greene Co. NY. Peter was born 1839 (37?) and Frances was born 1845. Peters father was the William Tryon who married Sally Day in Greene Co. NY in 1838. His grandfather was Peter, brother to Benjamin Tryon of St. Joseph, assuming I have it all connected right. 2. Brownell connection to the Tryon family. In the 1860 census of Barry Co. MI, Melissa Tryon age 16 is living with Heman Brownell age 45. He had been in MI since before the 1840 census, where he is in St. Joseph Co, if I'm not mistaken. Could never explain it. I assume either married a Tryon widow, which I can't find the marraige for, or he is a relative. Well, browsing thru the Tryon Union, I found the following: Betsey Tryon, dau of David Tryon and Mary Wakeman Pierson, married 1 George Brownell and married 2 Lyman Seeley. David is the son of Oliver Tryon and Deborah Mudge - the Quaker line of the family and grandson of Ziba Tryon and Dorothy Baldwin. Betsey was born between 1783 and 1790. Assuming she was 17 when she was marr, she would have married after 1799 to Brownell and could be Heman's mother or aunt by marraige, etc. The second marraige is interesting too. Emma Chaffee, dau of William Henry Chaffee and Loretta Nichols, married 1 to Jefferson Adam Seeley in 1896. William's parents were LYMAN Chaffee and ADELIA ANN TRYON. Don't know if it connects, but it is an interesting co-incidence. Vicki
Could the Samuel Tryon traveling with Rowland in Berrien Co. be a cousin? or a children that came to MI after the rest of the family? In the "History of Berrien and Van Buren Co. MI" written by D.W. Ellis in 1880, p. 305, it states that the "entire family consisting of father, mother, and 5 children". Later in the same paragraph, it mentions William and John as his sons, so I assume that the other 3 children are dau. There is a write-up on William H. Tryon, son of Rowland, in the same book, on a glossy page, facing p. 308. It talks about William, his father Rowland and his brother John. 1840 census confirms 3 dau and 2 son with the family. 1860 land records confirm a W.H Tryon, a J. Tryon and an S. Tryon. The S. Tryon is 4 sections away from the rest of the family. (W.H. and J are in section 29 and 30 - Sec 29 is mentioned in the write-up on Rowland - is the original homestead- while S. Tryon is on section 33). Rowland, William, John and Samuel all entered land in the Kalamazoo land office, although Samuel's entry is considerably later, in 1856. A Levi Tryon also entered land there, and is possibly the one is early Barry Co. records. I'm attaching the early Tryon land records from the State land office. Vicki Do we have a marraige date for Rowland? Since he was only 20 when Samuel was born, and with the article only listing 5 children for him, I suspect he is a nephew of Rowland, possibly raised by him. 1820 and 30 census is the one that gives me this opinion. 1820 - two children 26-45 and one head of house over 45 (Rowland is only 30) 121121 10101 1830 - Rowland is the probably one age 40-50 (just turned 40), but who is the one age 20-30? I assume it is Samuel. He was b. c 1810 and was in MI to marry in 1841. 0110101 110101 I have copies of the articles, if you would like, or I could type them in, given time, and you could attach them to the web site. Vicki
Richard, Thanks for doing the lookup. I am already corresponding with Dan Brevik. He and I are trying to trace Robert/Rowland TRYON and Susan EVERETT, who I have indications from Sarah's death records are her parents. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Arnold
I find no Sarah among the many in Wes Tryon's book "The Tryon Family in America" that was born in 1831. If he found a trace that is in his notes, it will show up with help from Dan Brevik. Regards, Richard Tryon Frankfort, MI
I am interested in any info re: Sarah TRYON, born about 1831 in either PA or CT. She was possibly married to William TAYLOR and lived in Berrien County, MI. She died on June 29, 1899 in Berrien County. Her parents were Robert TRYON and Susan Everett of Royalton, Berrien County, MI. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Arnold Levine aklev@aol.com
The Tryon Union website is finally useable with Microsoft Explorer, despite itself. Nothing new in the way of content, however. Still working furiously on it, but have digressed a bit in order to put up my high school yearbook for my old classmates. That took a bit of time but was a great learning experience. http://www.tryon-union.com/ Dan
Data for Crawford county, PA, has been uploaded to the tryon-union website. This data consist mainly of historical info involving Tryons, probate indexes, considerable cemetery records gathered by Rollie Littlewood, and land transfer indexes. All in all it is 58K of data. Hello everyone, I would like to extend a big thank you for the information I have received so quickly. It has been both interesting & informative. Hopefully the following will be of interest to someone out there. I am descended from JEREMIAH TRYON KENTNER/ALICE BOUGHNER who were married in 1801. Jeremiah, as you likely read in the message from Richard Tryon, was one of 6 children born to John P. Kentner/Mary Tryon. Jeremiah & Alice had a son JOHN KENTNER b. 1804 d. 3 Jan. 1885 who married ANNIE UTTER on 30 May 1831 in Trafalgar, ON. John was the 2nd of 10 children (Mary, John, Christopher Tryon, Matthias, Martin, Erastus, Briant, Joseph, Ann, Jeremiah T.). John & Annie had 8 children. Daughter CATHERINE KENTNER b. 14 Feb. 1843 d. 5 Oct. 1918 married JOSEPH BROWN WAITE on 27 Dec. 1871 in Lisgar, ON. Catherine was the 5th child. (Elizabeth Anne, Robert, Alice, Mary, Catherine, John, Erastus, and William) Catherine and Joseph had 3 children, the oldest being my Grandfather, ALBERT GEORGE ISAAC WAITE, b. 15 Aug. 1876, d. 1961 who married GRACE HURLBUT in 1916. George and Grace had one son, JOSEPH HURLBUT WAITE, b. 18 Sept. 1917 in Sovereign, Saskatchewan, my father. Dad married SYLVIA BEATRICE DOWDING b. 1 Sept. 1920 in Hermitage Newfoundland, d. 19 Sept. 1991. They had one child, me, JUDITH LYNN WAITE, b. 18 Sept. 1946 in Rosetown, Saskatchewan. I married KENNETH RICHARD RANKIN of Milden Saskatchewan in 1967. We have 2 children, KATHRYN NADINE, b. 15 June 1973, and TRENT JOSEPH b. 18 Sept. 1974. Both Kathryn & Trent are in Regina Sask. attending the University of Regina. Again, Thanks everyone. I will be looking forward to receiving more info. Judy
jrankin wrote and asked about Mary Tryon. Wes Tryon wrote: "She was the fifth daughter of David Tryon and Susan Bevin Tryon, was born at Middletown, Conn, July 15, 1745. She married John P. Kentner, of Middletown, June 2, 1774. He was born in 1757? and died in 1836. There were six children: Arnive Kentner, John Peter Kentner, Jeremiah Kentner, David Kentner, Olive Kentner and Amos Kentner." The Tryon line from David Tryon to this day is well documented in Wes Tryon's book "The Tryon Family in America" which I published in 1984. It is still available for $25 plus $5 S&H if checks are sent to me at 474 E.Crystal Downs Dr., in Frankfort, MI 49635. Hope this information will be helpful. Richard Tryon

Hi Sandra, while you have the book open <g>, On p.86 of the History of L&G by Mika, the author details the grant to Anne TRYON of a Patent, '...along the banks of the Rideau... " of 200 acres in Conc. 2, Lot 2 of Wolford Twp in the rear of the County of Grenville. No granting authority is indicated. Would this have been a grant to children of UELs under Order in Council? Otherwise, how could she qualify for the grant? I have been unable to locate her family; there are numerous New Eng candidates impossible to select without more data. There is a possibility, if UE related, that she is a descendant of one of the following, none of whom have I yet had an opportunity to study: Elias TRYON, b. abt 1766, of Yonge, Leeds, ON + Ann FAIRCHILD ... Ephraim TRYON, b. abt 1792, Yonge, Leeds, ON ... Elias Fairchild TRYON, b. abt 1794, Yonge, Leeds, ON (IGI Batch#:451044) Possibility: My 4th ggf, Simeon TRYON of New Fairfield had an older brother Asael, b. 1736. Asael had a son Elias, bap. 1769 as well as a daughter Anner living in 1780. US documentation does not show any further descendancy in this line. Samuel TRY(AR)(AN)(ON) -- 1784-1799 U.E.L. (Sketches Illustrating the Early Settlement and History of Glengarry in Canada, MacDonnell/Foster, 1893, p.14). Can't figure this one. The Governor, Wm TRYON, was on board his ship in NY harbour in 1776. William TRYON, 1775, Loyalist from NY to Glengarry, Ont.( id, p.9) and, while we're in Leeds, Men of Upper Canada, Militia Nominal Rolls 1828/9, includes: #249, Lucius (Lucas) TRYON, age 32, in the 4th Regt Leeds Militia. He is in N. Crosby Twp (Cs 1848.) #455, Asiel TRYON, age 28, is in the 2nd Regt Leeds Militia. Can you tell me the recruitment area for this unit? He could be a younger son of Elias, above. Hi there, Folks! Received this today, and thought I'd post it to the list, but will also reply separately to Judy and see if we can get her to join us. Perhaps when she gives us some additional info, it will ring a bell with someone.... I don't think that Mattoon is all that close to LaSalle County, but it is in the mid-west. My grandfather Newton Eugene and his brother Allen moved from Tryonville, Pa to Maumee, Ohio and founded the Maumee Valley Elec. Light and Power Co. in 1898. It appears that their father David Washington Tryon married Emma A. Cooke on Jan 5, 1869 in Mattoon, IL. She was the daughter of Sherman T. Cooke and Cornelia Jaqua Cooke. There is at least one Tryon still in Mattoon, but I don't know if he migrated recently or if he has knowledge of family in IL. Cornelia was born in Winstead, Conn. Don't know if this clue will help or not, but it is evidence of a Tryon in IL long before I migrated to it in 1958. Several other Tryons are in Champaign or have been in recent years. The second edition of Wes Tryon's book "The Tryon Family in America" was published with my help. A copy at $25 + $5 S&H can still be ordered from me. It contains seven named Frederick mostly in the 6th and 7th generations since William of Bibury. Good luck, Dick Tryon
Does anyone on this list know how one Frederic Tryon, who had a farm near Fall River Township in LaSalle County, Illinois in 1871, might fit into the tribe? A sketch of his farm was featured on the cover of the most recent issue of Pastfinder, the journal of the LaSalle County Genealogy Guild. Actually, as I reread the reference I found to this man, I note that the article was written in 1871, but it refers to area settlers as far back as 1825. "Frederic" is how the article spells his given name. I found three Fred* Tryon's in the first edition of The Tryon Family in America, but none of them show any links to the mid-west. Two other items from this article which may be relevant in placing this Frederic Tryon within the Tryon framework: At least one settler mentioned in the article came from Litchfield CT, where I know a number of Tryon's lived. There is mention that "Miss Tryon" (Fredric's daughter?) married John Ebersol (of LaSalle County) and moved to Ford County, Illinois. Rollie
