    3. Found a group of MI Tryon's with Canadian connections. Timothy Tryon died on Aug 12, 1868 at age 5y 8m 11d in Davison, Genesee Co. MI. MINERVA WATERHOUSE at GENESEE MI 14 DEC 1887 There is one other Genesee Co. MI record in my database: Deborah Eliza (Tryon) Cole age 37 m. May 4, 1869 to Peter Langford 36. They were both of Davison, Genesee Co. but Deborah was born in Durham NY. (circa 1832) Durham TWP is in Greene Co. NY, and the lines of Asa and Richard lived there. Some of this line eventually removed to Niagara Co. NY, so it is possible that some wandered to Canada also. The only Tryon listed in Durham in 1840 was John C. Tryon. 1. William Augustus Tryon of NY and MI.

    3. I have another orphan'ed Tryon to toss out for identification/discussion. I suspect that he may be connected to the same branch of the Tryon family that William of Hillsdale Co, MI and Ezra of Ionia Co. MI is, but I have no proof, except that William (of Hillsdale) and Ezra are linked as brothers by some researchers and William Augustus spent time in Ionia Co. MI. William Augustus Tryon first appears in my records in 1838, when he served as a notary Public and witness to a deed of Calvin Woodward to Samuel Dexter in Ronald, MI. The deed appears in Ionia Co. Deeds. He is probably the William Tryon listed in Ionia Co. MI in 1840 (some indexes list his middle init. as H). William A.(or H) Ionia Ionia p116 0021101,1000011 2 orphan Tryon's show up on the 1850 census of Ionia Co. I'm thinking that William A. brought them there, along with the William of Hillsdale Co. William. By 1850, he had removed to Kent Co, MI, where is listed in the 1850 census as W.A. W.A. Kent Walker 206 age 51 NY farmer w/sp Minerva 51 NY County histories state he was born 1799 in New Lebanon, NY. Could also be connected to John Tryon who was a Judge there in 1806? Supposedly arrived MI in 1836. Ionia Co. MI was the site of one of the early land offices and William A and Minerva bought several tracts of land thru it, all in 1841. I suspect that that is when they moved to Kent Co. MI. My Lyman Chaffee's father, was listed in the 1850 census of Gaines, and Lyman's and Adelia's sons were also living there in the 1860's. However, Walker and Gaines are several TWP's away from each other. Gaines is on the S. border of Kent, right above Allegan CO. and Walker is sandwiched between Grand Rapids and the Ottawa Co. Border. I also suspect that he is the William A Tryon on the 1830 census of Troy, NY: William A. Tryan 1830 NY Rensselaer Troy 2nd Ward p023 2100001 000031 Note the number of older women in the household; could William have raised his brother's children? Vicki

    3. I don't have any of these marraiges - how nice of you to send to them to me. Because of the lack of published indexed to MI census's after 1850, that is usually where my records end, except for marraiges, and unfornately, I haven't found a list of published Wayne Co. MI marraiges. There is an "orphan" Charles Tryon in Wayne Co. in the 1850's. He is listed in Detroit and is age 44 born NY. He is a lawyer and appears to be living in a Rooming house. He arrived there circa 1836, when he signed a local petition. He is not with any other Tryon's in the 1850 census, and his name does not appear on the 1840 census - hence the orphan tag. He spent the rest of his life in Detroit. He was possibly connected to Goodell's, like my Benjamin Jr, as Lemuel Goodell witnessed some of the deeds he drew up. There is an Edmond TRIAL in Wayne Co. MI in 1840 - Redford TWP, p 307, but I haven't researched him to see if he is connected to Charles. ---------- | From: billmacd@freenet.edmonton.ab.ca | To: Vicki Titus <vtitus@ipa.net> | Cc: Donald E. 3. We "Collect" Tryon's, I guess. I try to sort out all of these various Tryon's because I need to follow Benjamin Tryon's. A Benjamin Tryon witnessed the wedding of my Adelia Tryon and is the only link I can find to her background. I don't have her grave marker, or death date for an obit, or anything. Both MI and NY are infamous for not keeping very good records in the 1830's and 40's, which is when she was growing up. Vicki ---------- | From: JonH1@aol.com | To: TRYON-L@rootsweb.com | Subject: William Tryons of Connecticut | Date: Saturday, September 27, 1997 10:03 PM | | In early August I posted a document discussing my confusion over the several | William Tryons born in Connecticut in the mid 1700s. Dan said he did not have a record of William, son of William and Phebe | Bow. | | William is listed along with seven other children in the Connecticut | Historical Society manuscript. He is also in the Bidwell Genealogy. I'll send | copies of these documents to anyone who wants to see them. | | 2. Again, the Bidwell genealogy says that the | William Tryon, Jr., who died in Glastonbury on August 31, 1825, married Sarah | Bidwell at New Haven one week later than the above date. The genealogy also | gives William and Phebe as the parents of William, Jr. | | I have a copy of the Wethersfield Church Record showing the marriage of | William Tryon and Anna Hurlbut, "both of Wethersfield" on May 9, 1784. This | date is consistent with the births of the children of William of Farmington. | William of Glastonbury had children born prior to this date. | | 3. Dan misunderstood my statement about adding Sally, Anna & Prudence as | children of Benjamin Tryon and Rebecca Hurlbut. . | | They along with still another William are the children of William of | Farmington, who I conjecture to be the son of Benjamin and Rebecca. | | This is what I know about William of Farmington (1752-1821). | | His first wife died December 14, 1815 in Farmington. Obituaries were also printed in eight other Connecticut newspapers | but the ones I looked at said little more than that he died in Farmington, | served in the war, and was an honest man. 3. Hi all, Yes, I'm still alive, I'm just monitoring TRYON list now until lift off on "THE QUEST 3" which is my twice yearly expedition out to meet new relatives and visit more libraries, archives, museums and cemeteries in the counties of NORTHUMBERLAND, DURHAM, SIMCOE, VICTORIA, ONTARIO, PETERBOROUGH and the county of MUSKOKA. The above counties are dwelling places of my GRIFFIN, GEORGE ADAM TRYON and WILLIAM JOHN TRYON families and off branches of both. As I said earlier in my e-mails I am related 2 ways to the TRYON's; 1) SARAH ANN GRIFFIN who married William JOHN TRYON (she is my 2nd great grandaunt) 2) LUCINDA TRYON ('81) who married my great grandfather JAMES GRIFFIN making her my great grandmother. She was daughter of GEORGE ADAM TRYON. One week from today (Sat. Oct. 4), I leave for the Ontario Archives for a 10 hour marathon of research into the GRIFFIN's and TRYON's ( mostly GRIFFIN's). To Bill, I made up my itinery for the trip but I, unfortunately, couldn't find enough time to travel all the way to WESTPORT (hopefully THE QUEST IV in spring '98). Thanks to you all, Bill for your marriages etc. from the alberta archives research. Anne my new found cousin in SURREY for the obituaries (I'm going to try and get WILLIAM JOHN's obituary from the newspaper when in Gravenhurst). And last, but not at all least Don, who so graciously sent me the PAF file on my request for LUCAS and CALEB's families. Thanks Again, DAN WJ GRIFFIN "GRIFF" P.S. I now have unsubscribed to the other 9 mailing lists I belong to around the world, but I am keeping TRYON open until FRIDAY OCT. 3,1997. I probably will put in mail mode while I am away until my return.

The addresses are: http://www.ipa.net/~vtitus/westcox.html http://www.ipa.net/~vtitus/gctryon.html I will be reworking these pages, adding more info as I go along. 1. Another White connection - in Greene Co. NY
    2. Vicki Titus
    3. Since Rachel Dederick married Peter Tryon, I was also looking over the Dederick records. Found a possible connection to the White family: John Dederick married Jane/Jannetje White (also spelled Weyt). Their dau Catherine was bapt. Mar 5, 1798 and their dau Elizabeth May 16, 1803. Does anybody have any information on these families? Vicki

    1. Terry connection to Tryon family in Greene Co. NY
    2. Vicki Titus
    3. This is just a reminder: Drusilla Tryon, dau of Benjamin Peter and Mercy Tryon, married Ransom Terry in St. Joseph Co. MI in 1851. Don't know his parents, yet. When I was going thru the W. Coxcaskie records, I found that Gershom Terry was also a member of the church. He and Caroline Terry were dismissed circa 1827. His wife was listed as Nancy Butler. Nancy was received as a member 1814. Couldn't find a date for Gershom. Also found an approx death date for Nancy of Mar 1821, so Caroline could be a 2nd wife. The church had several lists of families living in the area. Gershom appears in the Eastern District list of 1822. Tryon's lived in the Western District. (Interesting sideline - the Eastern district is also where the Titus's lived.) Vicki

    1. Greene Co. NY write up on Benjamin's confusing - to say the least.
    2. Vicki Titus
    3. Dottie Lewis, who is interested in Sally (Tryon) Lewis and her brother Benjamin Tryon of Allegan Co., has been helping me with some Greene Co. NY research. She sent me a write-up out of the Greene CO. History today. I looked at it and it was really confusing. I will put my questions/comments in all caps, brother up by lots of white space. I will use birth year to try to identify the various Peters and Benjamin's. Book - History of Greene County, NY, pub. 1969, page 460, "Benjamin Tryon, of Coxsackie, was a native of England, and came to America with Captain Kidd as a soldier on board a man-o-war, and discarding the idea of joining Captain Kidd as a pirate, he was given his liberty and was left on Long Island, from which he came to Greene county before the Revolutionary War. Locating in what is now the town of Coxsackie, he had two sons, Peter and Benjamin. I AM THINKING THIS APPLIES TO THE BENJAMIN WHO WAS BORN CIRCA 1728 AND WHOSE WIFE IS ELIZABETH. (IS THIS THE BENJAMIN WHO WAS DEAD BY 1824?) Peter died at the age of 30. THE PETER WHO WAS BORN 1750? DIDN'T HE LIVE UNTIL AT LEAST 1802, TO FATHER FREDERICK? Benjamin was twice married. BENJAMIN B. 1745 MARRIED MACHTEL van SCHIACK AND SUSANNA (PARKS) PALMER - SUSANNA'S NAME GIVEN BOTH WAYS IN WEST COXSACKIE RECORDS He had three sons, Stephen, Benjamin, and Peter. Benjamin married Mary Allen, by whom he had five children, three of whom are not living; Benjamin, of Coxsackie, and Mary and Susan, of New York City. WOULD THIS BE BENJAMIN B. 1788> HAVEN'T FOUND THIS MARRAIGE YET. THIS CONFLICTS WITH DEAN GERNON'S INFO, BUT IT MIGHT BE THE TRUTH. The last mentioned Benjamion Tryon was born in Greenville, Greene county, NY, in 1813. He married Jane Smith, of Coxsackie, by whom he had one daughter and two sons (one of whom, Dr. Rufus Tryon, is now an acting surgeon in the U. S. Navy). Mr. Tryon has long been a member of the Dutch Reformed church, and Mrs. Tryon has been superintendent of the Sabbath-school of the same for 25 years." THIS WRITEUP SAYS NOTHING ABOUT JOCHEM AND PETER WHO WERE WITH HIM IN 1790 CENSUS OF THE AREA. BY ITS OWN ACCOUNT, THE PETER B. 1750 WAS DEAD BY 1780, SO EITHER THEY ARE WRONG ABOUT WHEN PETER 1750 DIED OR THE PETER ON THE 1790 CENSUS IS UP ONE GENERATION. aaaaaarrrrrrgggggg!

    1. Benjamin Tryon of early Greene Co. NY - military connection?
    2. Vicki Titus
    3. Benjamin Tryon was ordained as Deacon of the Reform Dutch Protestant church of Coxsackie in 1807. He replaced Abraham Lampman who refused to serve. (probably some relative, of his relative-by-marraige Stephen Lampman). He had been involved with church affairs from the beginning, "signing" the original church incorporation papers in 1788 and the Deed for a new meeting house in 1797/8. There are 2 shocking things I found out about Benjamin Tryon while going thru those early church records today - 1. Benjamin Tryon was quite possibly illiterate! On both the church incorporation papers and the deed I mentioned above, he "made his mark" with his initials. 2. Neither he, or any other Tryon, is not listed in the church records for people in the community who served in the Revolution from there. I assumed that he or one of his sons served from there. There were there as early as 1760, the date on Elizabeth, dau Benj and Eliz. Jochem had a dau baptized 1769, so he was certainly old enough to serve. Does anybody have any idea if they served or didn't, and where they would have signed the "Association" (or not signed as the case may be)?

    1. Benjamin Tryon of Fairfield Co. CT - ones not connected to Ziba.
    2. Vicki Titus
    3. I notice that the Benjamin Tryon Jr, son of Benjamin and Machtel (Van Schiack ) Tryon, married in Fairfield Co. CT to Hannah Weeks. I think I may have more data somehow connecting Tryon's to Fairfield, but I'm not sure. My Lyman and Adelia (Tryon) Chaffee's oldest son was named William. His first wife was Jane Edcomb, and they had 2 children before she died circa 1868. The first one was named Adelia Jane, the second Charlotte. Adelia Jane was adopted by Grandison Curtis Tousey. His family was from the Fairfield Co. CT area. (Curtis's married into the Tousey family several times in Fairfield Co.). The Tousey family arrived in MI circa 1834 and eventually settled in Kalamazoo Co. MI. They were never in NY, Tryon's stomping grounds, or VT, where the Chaffee's were from. I suspect the connection is in Fairfield Co. CT - Which is where Ziba's people settled. My question is - does anybody have any info if any other non-Ziba Tryon's were there.

    3. Hi Bill, I've fwded your msg to the Tryon List. All members, including Vicki and Dan will see it. If Dan doesn't already have the data, he will likely get back to you, gently place you up against the wall, and brain-drain you for everything you might know about the sources for this tidbit. Be prepared! Don PS: My copy of TMG3 just landed so it may be awhile before I re-surface. 1. 1850 census with Trin surname
    2. Vicki Titus
    3. A friend of mine looked up the Trin surname - there were only 5 on the entire 1850 census, so they might be Trion's. Here they are: Aaron Trin, Fall Twp, Bucks Co, PA p146 Efrom Trin, Leavenworth Twp, Leavenworth Co., KS p044 Henry Trin, 20th District, Washington Co, IL p166 James Trin, 2nd District, McNairy Co, TN p57 Michael Trin, Ridge Prarie District, St. Claire Co. IL Does anybody have any missing Tryon's with these names? Vicki

    1. West Coxsackie Dutch Reform Church records.
    2. Vicki Titus
    3. During this afternoon's research, I switched to the West Coxsackie records - they were typed and so were a little easier on the eyes. I only got thru the first 50 pages, but I have already found several interesting things: 1. A baptism record for Elizabeth TRYAN, dau Benjamin and Elizabeth TRYAN, bapt Aug 24, 1760. This was not in my records. Witness = Jan Len...d Bronk and Susannah Bronk. 2. This may be the John L. Brenk who witnessed the will of Benjamin Tryon (1745). The Bronk's witnessed a lot of the Tryon Childrens baptism's I saw. 3. Also found more Roosa connections = Tryon's as witnesses to Roosa children's birth. Titus's also married into the Roosa family in Dutchess/Ulster Co. NY and converted to the Dutch Reform Church. 4. Also found another possible Titus/Tryon connection. Nathaniel Titus married Sarah Brandow of Greene Co. NY and I just found a baptism record where Nathaniel was a witness to Brandow children baptisms. Brandow was a surname of one of the witnesses to Benj. Tryon (1745) Will, if I'm not mistaken. I am typing this before I have to deal with dinner, so I am making it real quick. If anybody has any requests/suggestions, besides getting all the Tryon info to update the Tryon union web page, let me know and I will see what I can find. Vicki
