    1. Benjamin Tryon marraige in Newaygo Co, MI - who is he?
    2. Vicki Titus
    3. The White Cloud library was nice enough to check for Benjamin's marraige for me. Here is what the data says: April ll, 1880 Benjamin Tryon was 49 and Mary Ellen Lord was either 17 or 19. Benjamin born in N Y ,Mary Ellen born in Mi. He was a Wood Maker ( so it states- whatever that was at that time) They were married by Justice James Conver - in Ashland Twp. This Benjamin is b. 1831 but could he be the Benjamin in Allegan just lying his age a little bit? Allegan Co. Benjamin gives his age as 36 in 1850. I suspect it could be. I also think that he was in Van Buren after he left Allegan and "went east" according to the Allegan Co. county history. Is this the same Benjamin who was in Van Buren in 1860 and said his age was age 34 NY, in Lawrence TWP. He had a son Wesley Aaron b. jun 18, 1868 - Mother Charity. If they are all the same man..... we could have real problems identifying him, even if we could find his grave. Vicki

I just started my genealogical research last summer, >so I haven't gotten very far yet and appreciate any help. > >--Christine Christine, I am copying the Tryon list for the benefit of everyone. Let's start with what is known about the family group of John Tryon's father, Ezra: Ezra Tryon married Anner Bidwell, probably in Middletown (where she was from) or Glastonbury (where he appears to be from); most likely time was the 1780s after Ezra was out of the military and before the birth of son David ca 1790. For those who are interested in technique, Anner's maiden name was ascertained by taking gravestone data - 'In memory of Anner Tryon, died 1-21-1818 in the 56th year of her age' - determining an approximate date of birth, 1761 - and then searching Barbour index records for Glastonbury, Middletown, and Wethersfield for any "Anner, Annor, Hannah, Honor, Anna" that would match. Actually, I didn't have to search Wethersfield because the perfect match occurred in Anner Bidwell, born July 4, 1761, daughter of Samuel Bidwell and Iranah Hubbard. Anner's brother Samuel Bidwell was on the road with his sister and her husband Ezra Tryon; you can find them in all the same places - Otsego County, NY in 1800, Clarence, NY in 1810 and Wayne County in 1820. That Ezra's Anner was Anner Bidwell was later confirmed by a 1797 record in Middletown in which Ezra and Anner Tryon, "of Suffrage (later known as Milford), Otsego County, NY," quit claim their rights in the estate of her father Samuel Bidwell, to her brother Ashbell Bidwell of Middletown. Ezra Tryon was born probably on August 2nd, 1759. He died in Wayne County, Ohio on May 25, 1847, age 88. I have a picture of both stones - Dan, want me to scan them for the Tryon Union web site? Extract of Ezra Tryon obituary, Western Christian Advocate, Nov 5 1847: Ezra Tryon, b 1759, CT; d at his son-in-laws, Daniel Smith in Canaan Twp, Wayne Co, Ohio; married; Issue; at least one daughter; RW Soldier; joined [Methodist] church in Milford, Otsego County, NY in 1795; 1811-12 moved to northwest NY, from there to Holmes County, OH. Known family of Ezra and Anner (Bidwell) Tryon: David, b ca 1790 NY, m Oladine Tyler Mar 2 1820 in Wayne County (DAR marriages) John, b Mar 8 1794, m Lydia Sadler, probably New York. On a bio of John's son Enos Tryon, Knapp's History of the Pioneer and Modern Times of Ashland County, Ohio indicates Lydia Sadler was born in New York. However, later census records indicate she was born in Canada. Both John and Lydia are buried in Fairview Cemetery, Clinton Township, Wayne County. Elizabeth, b Jun 12, 1792. She may have married a Stewart. Ezra's Revolutionary War pension records reveal an Earl R. Stewart wrote asking for Ezra's war records. His letter indicates that he descends from Ezra's daughter Elizabeth and that she was born June 12, 1792. There was a William K. Stewart living very close to the Tryons in 1820 Wayne County. The assumption that she married a Stewart is not conclusive since a female descendant of Elizabeth's could have married a Stewart. Earl R. Stewart was living in Michigan at the time of his letter (just after 1900) and I have traced him through some census years. He was living near Lansing. Mary, b about Feb 1799, m Daniel Smith, Apr 6 1820; DAR Marriages; They stayed in the Wayne County area and both are buried in Canaan Bend cemetery in Canaan Township. Adah, b ca 1800, m Charles Isbell July 23, 1815 in Clarence, New York. I only have a secondary source for the date of marriage, "The Descendants of Robert Isbell" by Mason. Charles and Adah (Tryon) Isbell were briefly in Monroe County Michigan before settling in Noble County, Indiana. Adah is my ancestor. Next note, I will discuss the ancestry of John Tryon's mother, Anner Bidwell. It is quite interesting...she descends from many of the notable families who settled central Connecticut. Doug

    3. John, Ezra Tryon, father of John Tryon of Wayne County, Ohio enlisted in the Revolutionary War at Rocky Hill, CT in March of 1777. War service records and town records indicate Ezra was a resident of Glastonbury, CT, just across the river from Rocky Hill. Ezra enlisted in Captain Buckley's Company of the 9th Connecticut Regiment commanded by Col. Samuel B. Webb. He was in the battle of Rhode Island, Battle of Springfield, NJ, Battle of Yorktown, and was present at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis. On December 10, 1777, while crossing Long Island Sound, Ezra was taken prisoner by the British. He was retained until July 16, 1778, at which time he was exchanged. All indications are that Ezra was much more a 'commoner' than Governor Tryon. Ezra listed 'cooper' as his occupation on his Reveolutionary War pension papers. He served as a private throughout his 6 years in the war. Ezra, I would say is about a 5th generation descendant, give or take, from the original Tryon immigrant to Connecticut, William Tryon. It would be fun to know how the later generation English Tryons tie in with the early colonial American Tryons. 2. Vicki Titus
    3. I think we can give officially up on the Amos White in 1850 Mendon being the one who Benjamin Peter Tryon was living with in 1850. He died in 1854, shortly after being send to prison for murder. This is according to a history of St. Joseph Co. MI. Kind of thankful, for Fanny Tryon, that she wasn't married to that particular White. Vicki

    1. William Tryon of Madison Co. NY - died 1833
    2. Vicki Titus
    3. I just reread the notes for the William Tryon who was a son of Edward Tryon. The data you sent me on him states that William came from GREENE CO. NY and settled in Canastota, NY, Madison Co. NY. I have often looked at him for Adelia's father. Is it possible that the data is incomplete, just like the Benjamin who is in the Greene Co. NY line that some people think married Hannah Weeks while county histories state his wife was Mary Allen? My database of Alt. spellings indicated that a John Tryon was in Madison Co. NY for 1830. : Lenox TWP, page 338 0002001-00100401 That places 2 sons age 15-20 and a head of household age 40-50, or born 1780-90. also a dau age 10-15. This could account for Sally and Benjamin of Allegan Co. MI. He was 16 and she was born late in 1814 and could be 15 in that census. Madison Co. is where Sally's husband, Calvin Lewis. was from, according to his first deed in Allegan Co. MI Also in Madison Co. is a William Tryon: ;Lenox page 313 00100001 1000001001 That places 1 son age 10-15 and 1 dau under 5. This accounts for Adelia, just barely a year or two old during the 1830 census. If Adelia was a dau of this William, she might have been sent off to live with relatives, like the John Tryon in the area. That or his wife Lucretia might have remarried. When I went thru the Madison Co. NY cem records, William was buried alone, even though the notes say Mabel was buried there. We know that Jochem (John) Tryon of Greene Co. had a son William b. 1774/5, which would check with the Madison Co. NY William. Since we lose track of Jochem, he could have had a second son, which might have been named John. My question is this -- do we have any indications of Tryon's in Chenango Co. NY? That is the mother county of Madison Co. NY. Although Madison was created in 1806, it could be possible that deeds, etc, for Madison Co. was still entered in Chenango Co. NY. I found several deeds for Allegan Co. entered in Barry Co. MI even 15-16 years after Allegan was created. I know we have discussed this before, but I'm just wondering if anybody has found anything, either in Wes's books or other wise that might clear this up, one way or another. Vicki

I posted following from a post to Lanark County [ON] Genealogy Soc re a Wm & David TRAILL: Subject: TRAILL Family of Lanark Co Date: Sun, 07 Dec 1997 03:03:33 -0400 From: Don Tryon <detryon@fox.nstn.ca> To: PeterAndersen@easyinternet.net Hello Peter, Saw your note on LCGS re the a/m family and just wanted to confirm that David and William are actually TRAILs. Just a couple of doors over in Frontenac, Lennox & Addington, William and Peter TRYON are early arrivals in the 1820s. A David is in Northumberland, Cramahe in 1840/50. The Tryon family in the US had many misspellings including TRIAL(L) and TRYAL(L), so am just confirming. Regards, Don ======================= Peter Anderson replied: Don: William Traill arrived in Lanark Cty. from Ireland c.1849. Another earlier family of Traills were early arrivals in the Trent Valley/Peterborough area as I recall from a recollection of Catherine Parr Traill and her sister, Susannah Moodie, who wrote the pioneer novel "Roughing it in the bush". They I think were English. Both were talented writers and Catherine was an equally talented artist. As far as I know all these folk came with the name as is. Thnx for your query. 3. Pam, I know Mark Merritt would be interested in this; he asked me for the descendancy last year. Is he still subbed to the list? If not, I'll fwd them to him. Minerva being an unusual name, do you think these folks might tie in??? Dan

As to the ranking of children, this seems to be an ideosyncracy of the program "ged2html" which I used to convert from a GEDCOM to the html posted on the website. It doesn't seem to sort the children by birthdate. In actual fact, Priscilla appears in the database as the last child, born in 1834(?). > > I have a list of children for them, along with burial info for Benjamin > Peter, Mercy, and Drusilla's family. Good. In the future could you please use the Reference number assigned to the person, if there is one? It's a lot easier that way to figure out who of 10,000 you are talking about. Thanks for your enthusiasm in updating errors and providing missing data. I hope by next summer to have a version posted that everyone can agree on, or at least agree on most and enumerate the remaining problem areas. Dan

    3. The Priscilla you state as a dau of Benjamin Peter b. 1836 is probably Drusilla, who married Ransom Terry in St. Joseph Co. in 1851. She would be his last dau, not so close to the top. I have a list of children for them, along with burial info for Benjamin Peter, Mercy, and Drusilla's family. I also have info on Henry, his wife, their one dau Henrietta, etc. I also have info that Francis/Fanny's married name was White, and she lived with Benjamin Peter for a couple of years, as she witnessed Drusilla's marraige. However, just like Benjamin of Allegan Co, I can't find them after the 1850's. Vicki

    3. In 1830, Benjamin RYON m. Minerva Goodell, both of Fowler. I always suspected that that was the Benjamin whose will was probated in St. Lawrence Co. where Fowler is located. Your records show that "probate" Benjamin didn't get there until just before 1850. That means that the marraige could be for Benjamin of Greene Co. as he worked his way toward MI. Does anybody have records of anything close to Benjamin/Minerva marraiges? There is very little info on Benjamin Peter's wife/wives, but the marraige to a Goodell might explain the Goodell connection I see in MI 1 generation later. It would be a stepmother to the Benjamin who settled in Allegan with the Goodell's, and also for Adelia, since she was born circa 1829. Vicki
