Hi All, I am wondering if Some Kind Soul is available to check out if one of my ancestors is buried in the Cemetery in British West Indies. Thomas Matthew Power (1843) died in the Port of Spain, Trinidad on the 28 September 1888. He had two marriages, one in England when he had a daughter, and another in Santiago or Valparaiso where he had two sons. In 1866 he is sailing up and down the coast of Chile on the ship Panama where they delivered supplies to the Ports and the Islands. Just in case he has a head stone that states what he died from, at the age of 45; or if it was written in the local Newspapers. Thank you for any assistance you can give me with this query. His father, Thomas Power, was a Master Mariner, on the ship Worrall, in 1866, Previously he had sailed down there on the Abbott's Reading, and after, on the Pride of Wales. I suspect each time was to Valparaiso. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dnapower/diaries/norapower.htm Would appreciate any help I can get on this. Thank you. Regards, Warren C. O. Power in Melbourne Australia (ex Kiwi).
I am trying to find the ancestors of Robert Carlos/Charles Hardy. He would have been born c 1881 as he was aged 36 when he travelled on the SS Maraval to the USA arriving at Ellis Island on 15th July 1916 and said he was going to New York. At Ellis island he listed his father R H Hardy of the Colonial Hospital in Port of Spain as his nearest kin. He also said he was born in what looks like Slandall or Slandale Nova Scotia, but lived in Port of Spain. and that he was Visiting: Friend W Johnson West 131 Street He signed up for the 3rd battalion of the Gordon Highlanders 18th July 1917 and was transferred to the reserves in 1919. On his medical for he gives his birth as Port of Spain, Trinidad. The British Government paid for his fare back to the USA 14th May 1919 when he travelled back on the SS Ulva he was aged 38 and was going to the house of Mrs Johnson 70W 131St NY. I have him on the 1920 USA census aged 37 and living in the house of David and Anne Johnson at 70W 131st Street, Manhattan Assembly District 19, New York. It says born British West Indies. I also have him on the 1930 census age 42 (a bit of discrepancies in the ages here) and he says born Scotland and both parents were born in Scotland. He is with wife Mildred and 6 children. I would appreciate any help that you might be able to give me as I have been researching this family now for some years and somehow or other Robert Carlos remains an enigma. Eveline

Good morning I am trying to establish the identity of Thomas F Johnston who was Colonial Secretary in Trinidad from around 1838 to his death in 1873. He had 5 children as far as I know, and a wife Elizabeth, who was born in Middlesex England, but they probably married in the West Indies. His children are: Annie Josephine born 1842, Henry McLeod born 1845, Alice born 1856, Blanche Watson born 1862, and Dudley Fairfax born 1865. Dudley is alleged to have died from a fall from his horse while breaking it in. Whether this happened in Trinidad I don't know. Blanche Watson Johnson married George Leverstone Allen 6 Sept 1880 at St Barnabas Church, Golconda In South Naparima, Trinidad. Elizabeth returned to England after 1873, and died in Fulham, Middlesex, England in 1895. I would like to find the marriage of Thomas F and Elizabeth, which I assume took place in Trinidad. She was born in England, but no marriage can be found here. I would also like to find the baptisms of the children. Any help with this problem family would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks John
Rootsweb mailing lists are automatic and are managed by list robots. These robots take care of subscription requests and bouncing (rejected) emails. The most frequently asked question of subscribers is: ***************** "Why have I been unsubscribed?" Answer: If your list mail cannot be delivered for any reason, the list robot unsubscribes you after a certain number of failed attempts. (For the TRINIDAD-AND-TOBAGO list the maximum member bounce score is: 3) This can happen for a number of reasons - some of the more common reasons are that your mailbox is full, your spam filter is blocking the list mail, your ISP is blocking list mail from Rootsweb, you have put an automatic responder on your email.... If you were unsubscribed and did not wish to be taken off the mailing list, simply subscribe again. However be forewarned that if whatever caused the list robot to unsubscribe you the first time is still happening, it will simply remove you again after a specific number of bounces--3--(rejected list mail to your email address). But as a courtesy to all TRINIDAD-AND-TOBAGO listers, I can re-subscribe you manually. Just let me know. ****************** Other questions asked are: "How do I unsubscribe?" Answer: Simply follow the instructions at the bottom of every list mail message. ****************** "Why is my mail not getting to the mailing list?" Answer: Make sure that you are sending from the same email you are subscribed under. The list robot does not recognize names. It only recognizes email addresses. If your sending email address is not on the subscriber list, your email will be rejected. ****************** "Why am I not getting list mail?" Answer: Check the HelpDesk notices in the yellow box for announcements about any technical problems with Rootsweb mail. http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ If you don't find the answer to your problem on the HelpDesk page you need to check if you are still subscribed to the list. Hello From New Zealand I have found that Isabel Alger COOMBS passed through New York in Jan 1910 and Jul 1914 on her way to and from Trinidad from and to the UK. I wondered if there is any reference in Trinidad as to why she was there. Any help gratefully received. Thanks Mike

Dear list, I have another question regarding our genealogy trip to Trinidad. If anyone has travelled to Port of Spain can they recommend a moderately priced hotel, and did you encouter any problems travelling around on your own? Thank you. Carol
Hi List, My daughter and I will be going to Port of Spain Trinidad for 3 days in December. We would like to visit her great grandparents graves but we do not know where they are buried. Can someone on this list tell me how one goes about finding out where someone is buried? All we know is they lived in Port of Spain. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you. Carol
