I have HENKES relatives from two separate family branches--from Trier--and from Mettendorf (Bitburg area), not far apart. Laura- Today we are very exacting about the way we spell names, but that wasn't always so. Prior to the last 100-150 years or so, names were spelled however the person creating the record chose to spell it. When folks were illiterate, they were at the mercy of the clergyman or bureaucrat who created the record. I've found my surame spelled over 60 different ways. Don't ever ignore a name because it may be spelled slightly differently than how it's spelled now. Focus on the pronunciation-- is it pronounced about the same? > OVERVIEW DETAILS: > Matthew HENKES > Born: November 7, 1856 - Trier, Germany. > Died: January 11, 1926 - Mt. Angel was settled largely by Germans. It's a very small place. . . The Oregon Death Index is online here: http://www.oregonhistory.com/Death_Index/Search_Results.cfm Matthew's death cert is listed there, but exact location of death can only be determined by obtaining the death certificate itself. If you want Matthew's obit, the newspapers for the area have been microfilmed and are available through interlibrary loan from the University of Oregon: http://libweb.uoregon.edu/govdocs/micro/titles.html#Marion You can ask your local library to get the film for you. I had great luck in the information I found from the obit I located there. Good luck! Kathy
