Donna, do you mean Filzen in the Saar valley or Brauneberg-Filzen in the Bernkastel area? If you mean Filzen/Saar in the direct vicinity of Trier, its name today is Konz-Filzen as this tiny village is now part of the city of Konz (Konz: 18.000 inh.). Konz is situated 10 Kilometer west of Trier, where the Saar River flows in the Mosel River. Filzen lies in the Saar Valley and the area is famous for its riesling wines. Abt. 350 people are living in Filzen today, there are a lot of old houses and two very nice winerys from 18th century, called Weingut Piedmont and Weingut Reverchon. At the site behind the following link you'll find 7 links with pictures in Filzen. Look for Konz-Filzen in the Link-List. http://bwpc08.fh-trier.de:8080/kuDb/servlet/selectionObj?aktSchluessel=1950&anfrageId=a6116b68735 It is a very picturesque area worth a visit and the Riesling from the area is worth a try. I don`t know a lot about the history. The site mentioned says, the name Filzen comes from "Felsen", the german name for "Rocks". There are a lot of rocks in the Saar valley. The site says, the village was first mentioned in 1030. In Hamm, near Filzen, there was an important ferry across the Saar. If you look for the other Filzen, its called Brauneberg-Filzen as it is part of the village of Brauneberg (1200 inh.) If you look for Brauneberg, be aware: Until 1925 Brauneberg was called Dusemond. It changed its name for wine-marketing reasons. Brauneberg is very old, maybe roman. It was first mentioned in 6th century. As the other area, it is famous for its Riesling. It did not belong to the territory of the lord elector of Trier but to the County (Grafschaft) Veldenz, which was one of the very few protestant territories in the area.
