I have a question concerning surnames used in Church Records. I am researching Catholic records for Budesheim, a village 30 miles or so north of Trier, in the period 1800-1850. The date appears in the first column, the infants name in the second, and the parents and Godparents in the third. In most cases the infant's surname is listed as the same as the father's. But in some cases, the infant's surname is listed the same as the infant's mother; and in at least one case, the same as one of the Godparents. For example, I am interested in three brothers named Meyer. Each had at least one child, and in all cases, the surname listed for the child is the same as the maiden name of the associated mother (Schifer, Webers, and Cremer), instead of the father's (Meyer). Can anyone shed any light on this practice for me? Any help is much appreciated. Dick
