I am posting this to see if anyone can help me with the place names and for posterity if anyone ever needs this info when they are searching the list archives. My questions follow the text >From Stevens Point Daily journal 9/25/1897 Death of Mrs. Peter Bungert Mrs. Peter Bungert was born in Geisffeld, Kries Trier, Reihnfreussen, Germany on May 18, 1825. Her maiden name was Annie Knope and she was a cousin to the late N. Knope whose death occurred Saturday. She was married to Peter Bungert on February 1, 1848 in her native town and continued to reside there until April 1872; when the family moved to the farm in Sharon where they have continued to reside ever since. About five years ago she suffered two light strokes of paralysis which left her in a delicate condition and she continued to grow constantly weaker until the end. She died Sunday evening at 7:15 o'clock. The funeral which was largely attended was Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock from St. Martin's German Catholic church of Ellis, Rev. J.A. Bourgmeyer of Custer officiating. The pall bearers were Peter Trierweieler, Adam Welch, Peter Schliesman, and Sebastian Simbauer. The Bungert home is located about two miles northwest of Ellis. The deceased leaves a husband, aged 75 years, and four grown children, Mrs. B Bender and Peter Bungert of Sharon and N. Bungert and Mrs. Frank Ford of this city. Annie Knope is a direct ancestor of mine. This obituary is one of the best items of proof that the family came from Trier but I don't recognize or understand the rest of the place names. I assume that Geisffeld, Kries Trier, Reihnfreussen, Germany is city, county, state, country but I would appreciate it if anyone knows what Geisffeld or Reihnfreussen are and why Kries Trier is listed as one item. Next, are the pace names spelled right. On the same page as this obituary is the obituary of her cousin, Nicholas. The obituaries have some of the same people listed but the peoples names are spelled differently. (On the same page!) Just as an aside, notice the list of pall bearers. I guess Steven's Point was a German community at the time. Any thoughts? Mitch Trier POB 415 Lisle, IL 60532 paxpooh@aol.com
