The part that became the province of Luxembourg, Belgium was split in Third Partition, 1839 in the First Treaty of London. French-speaking western part became Belgian province of Luxembourg. Belgium had made two attempts later on to try to annex the rest of Luxembourg but were thwarted by the 1867 Second Treaty of London recognizing independence of Luxembourg. From 1839 until 1867 the Prussians maintained a garrison for the Dutch King then. Belgium tried to claim Luxembourg in 1918-1919 at the peace conference of Versailles.
