Hello, In reading comments about the history of Borg and its previous spellings, I am reminded of my ancestor's tombstone inscription-- "Johann Tressel, Geb Beurich, Kries Trier, Regieringshezsch Saarberg, Geb 17 June 1797." Obviously, many naive spelling errors in it. I had decided that "Beurich" was Beurig, but possibly it should have been Borg? Johann came to Illinois in the early 1850's. Ann
Hello, In this case you were right with Beurig. In the area the "ig" finals are often pronounced "ich"... that's dialect :-) And as they often wrote according to sound, it's logic to find "Beurich". Barbara, nouns with the ending "-ig" are pronounced as "-ich" in high german. Thats not dialect. So it is correct to say "Beurich or "Koenich" or "ewich". Take a look at the phonetic transcriptions in the Duden or Wahrig dictionaries. Hello, Beurig is the correct writing and Beurich the spelling. Today it is a part of the city of Saarburg at the river Saar, 15 miles southwest of Trier. From this area a lot of people emigrated in the 1840`s and 1850`s. The emigration lists in Mr. Mergen´s book gegin late in 1857. So the former emigrants are not listed in his book. The emigrants without a permission are not listed, too. The emigrants names from Beurig are: Hauser, Jaeger, Schuh, Weber, Kronenburger, Adams, Wagner.
