    3. The month of Messidor and the eleventh year of the French Republic refer to what is called the "Republican Calendar", that's a Calendar instituted following the French Revolution but which lasted only some years. The months of this calendar didn't have the same length as our months etc. so I never tried to remember all this stuff... :-) but I know websites where you can calculate those dates to get them in our calendar dates but those sites are either in French or in German... so you better make a search on internet about the "Republican Calendar" and I'm sure you're going to find a site where you can make the conversion in English. 3. Barbara, Thank you very much for this explanation. I ran into this problem when researching one of my lines a few years ago, and then I had to explain why the birthdates were coming up several months apart. Best wishes, Joe ----- Original Message ----- From: "barbara schnubel" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, August 20, 2002 8:35 PM Subject: Re: [TRIER-ROOTS-L] Date on birth record > The month of Messidor and the eleventh year of the French Republic refer to > what is called the "Republican Calendar", that's a Calendar instituted > following the French Revolution but which lasted only some years. 3. Maybe this will help. According to a reference booklet: Republican Calendar Messidor: Republican Year XI 25th day Gregorian Year 1803 14 July It was mentioned 1801: If 1801 it would be: Republican Year IX 25th day Gregorian Year 1801 14 July Alice barbara schnubel wrote: > > The month of Messidor and the eleventh year of the French Republic refer to > what is called the "Republican Calendar", that's a Calendar instituted > following the French Revolution but which lasted only some years. 3. Hello, The french revolutionary calendar, in use from 1793 (year 2 of revolution),until 1805 was divided in the following twelve Months (every month was subdivided in 3 decades, so one month had 30 days. At the end of each year, there were 6 complementary days, used as feast-days. 1 Vendémiaire 2 Brumaire 3 Frimaire 4 Nivôse 5 Pluviôse 6 Ventôse 7 Germinal 8 Floréal 9 Prairial 10 Messidor 11Thermidor 12 Fructidor There are various sites to calculate between the different calendars. Look at: http://www.fourmilab.ch/documents/calendar/ According to this site, your searched date is July, 14, 1803 in our calendar.
