Not long ago I came across a website on the naming system for Germans. It said when there are two names the first is a saint's name, but the second name was the one the person went by. I am researching church records from the 1700s in the Waxweiler and Pallien parishes. Does anyone know whether this system would have applied during that time period? Could that mean Anna Catherina might go by that name as well as just Catherina when she is named as a parent in her children's baptism records? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me, Jane researching Bertel/Berthel, Coumont, Roth, Laub, Lebot, Thiel, Thilen/Thelen
Hi Jane, This "naming system" may have been true sometimes, but I wouldn't take it always as granted. I have found a lot of people during my search who had two names on their birthcertificate but were called by one or the other or both together afterwards. I have not notice a system in this.
