Werner, here's a little data for your files. Four brothers, sons of Johann Gilles and Margaret Palms emigrated to Wisconsin in 1846. Their village in Germany was Schoenfeld, near Stadtkyll. They settled in the town of Marshfield in Fond du Lac County -- subsequently moved on to northeastern Iowa and western Wisconsin. Perhaps (if > Catherine & Mary were sisters) they named their first sons after their > deceased father. It was the tradition in the Trier area to name children after their baptismal sponsors. Although grandparents were often sponsors for their grandchildren, that couldn't have happened in this instance if the grandfather were already deceased. The indexes to dozens of Familinbücher are online here: http://www.genealogienetz.de/vereine/wgff/trier/ Why don't you check them out to see if you can find any clues? It seems to me that the birth name of Antoinette is a big clue. It was a very unusual name in the Trier area. Serial emigration was very common, so another way to approach this is to find the hometowns of others who settled in their area of Iowa. Good luck! Kathy
Kathy/Werner - As a follow-up to my post in this list in 2002 and as indicated in the list of Auswanderer (emigrants) online at http://www.genealogienetz.de/vereine/wgff/trier/ Nicholas SCHUMACHER and Maria KLASSEN born in Trimport, Trier, Germany emigrated in 1851 and 1847, respectively, to Roxbury, Dane County, Wisconsin where they were married in 1855. I have ancestors from the Trier area but they didn't emigrate to Wisconsin... They emigrated to the Chicago IL!! And I am sure there were many more who also ended up in Illinois!! My Franzen's came from Sülm/Röhl, Bitburg area... http://www.budlink.us/JT_webcards/wc01/wc01_462.htm A wonderful volunteer named Cindy (I had computer problems early last year so lost most of my correspondence with her...) was also looking & researching in the Trier area. She put me on to MY ancestors when I never thought I would find them ;-) I think she lives in Iowa but I'm not sure... Liebe Freunde Förscher, Heute suche ich in Ihren Gegend Auskünften auf METZMACHER Johann Peter Théodor, geboren um 1841 zu Monschau, Aachen verheiratet mit Maria Adolfina LECOQ Vielleicht kann Jemanden mich helfen. Danke im Vorraus, Philippe aus Malmedy, Belgien
Have anyone found this name in the records they have searched? This is my mother's maiden name. Johnann Sollman came from Trier in July 1770 to register in Vienna. I can't find him in Trier records that I have searched. He came with some other people. Then there is a listing of a George Sollman and a Lawrence Sollman in the early 1800s. Any informatin would be appreciated. Lynette Nimtz ctn55044@centurytel.net
Werner, Thanks for your info on the very early 1842-1857 immigrants from Trier. For 16 years I have been trying to trace my wife's KISCH ancestors, supposedly from Trier. Here is all the info I have: KISCH; KIESCH; KISH, Antoinette (mother) & Catherine (daughter). Antoinette [maiden name unknown] KISCH, born 1811? [15 Jan 1873 obituary reads, "aged 61 years" ]. Catherine/"Kate" KISCH, born "February 24, 1840, Trier, Germany." [funeral card]. [Same date on her gravestone.] [For another birth year, see 1900 Census below.] "... born in Trier, Germany, February 24, eighty-five years ago and came to this country with her parents when ten years old. For two years the family lived in Syracuse [Onondaga County], N.Y. Since that time Mrs. OETH has been a resident of Dubuque." [obituary, March 1925] [NOTE: Dubuque is just across the Mississippi River from Wisconsin.] 1860 Census -- "Catherine KEISH"; age "19"; "Place of birth" - "Prussia" [she was living with the "Thomas & Mary FAHRTY" family in Dubuque. Thomas was "age 30, born in Wisconsin," and Mary was "age 28, born in Ohio." They had three children - Alma (4), Anastasia (3), and John (1). I don't know for sure if this is my Catherine; I don't know this family.] Married Peter OETH, St. Mary Catholic Church, Dubuque, 9 Mar 1861. 1880 Census -- age "34"; "Place of Birth" - "Prussia". 1900 Census -- age "59"; "born Feb 1841"; "Germany"; "Year of immigration" - [nothing entered]; "Years in the U.S." - M" [a mark that looks like an "M" but probably means she couldn't remember. Other persons on this page have years entered.] 1910 Census - age "69"; "Year of immigration" - "1850"? "1853"? [I cannot read the handwriting.] 1920 Census - age "79"; "Place of birth" -- "Germany"; "Year of immigration" - "M"; "Years in the U.S" - "M". The name of Catherine's father is not known, nor the dates and places of his birth, marriage and death. Antoinette and ? KISCH may have had at least two children -- Catherine/"Kate" (b.1840/41), and Maria/Mary (b. c1847). NOTE: In a Dubuque birth/baptismal record, Catherine/"Kate" [KISCH] OETH named her first daughter "Maria Catherine" (godmother: "A. Maria Kiesch"). In another Dubuque birth/baptismal record, a Maria/Mary ["KISH"] SAUTER named her first daughter "Katie." Perhaps Catherine/"Kate" [KISCH] OETH and A. Maria/Mary ["KISH"] SAUTER were sisters. Catherine [KISCH] OETH named her first child (a son) "William". Maria/Mary [KISH] SAUTER named her first son "William". Perhaps (if Catherine & Mary were sisters) they named their first sons after their deceased father. The SAUTER family is in the 1870 Dubuque Co. Federal Census, but not any of the future censuses (I think I have traced them to Perry Co., Ohio; although I have not found an obit for Maria/Mary). -------------------------------- I have not been able to document this KISCH family in Trier, or in Syracuse; or on a passenger list. I have searched many variations of this surname, including those with "R" such as KIRSCH. However, I do not recall seeing "KIRSCH" in any of the family records. Perhaps this KISCH family came from near Trier; perhaps even from Luxembourg. My wife and I have 24 immigrant ancestors. I have traced 22 to their hometowns in Europe. I have not been able to trace KISCH. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Daniel Daniel J. Kortenkamp Stevens Point, WI 54481 http://www.uwsp.edu/psych/dk/danielpg.htm
Another Trier immigrant was Michael Blindauer who settled in Dane Co., Wisconsin. I have not found a connection to Peter Blindauer as yet. Judith
Peter Blindauer immigrated from Trier about 1865, settled in Washington Co., Wi. Later he moved to Brown Co. Judith

I am looking for information on the small community named BUTZWEILER. I have traced some of my family with the surname FISCH to this community and I would like to know if anyone knows if there is a Catholic Church located there. If so what's its name and would they have the records from the 1800's and possibly prior to the 1800's. If they do not have the records there where might I look to locate birth records? I am trying to verify data on Theodor FISCH who reportedly was born there 23 August 1831 and then immigrated to the United States leaving from Antwerp in 1852 bound for New York. He later settled in Iowa and then Minnesota where he died 4 Jan 1911. I believe he may have been the son of Nicholas FISCH and Annae RUETER, but I do not know this for certain. If you have any information regarding any of this I would be very pleased to get your response. Thanks. Michael J. There is an extensive Pauley family in Shelby County, Iowa, beginning with Theodore b 1838. I do not know his origin beyond Prussia.
