Hello Werner and all listers, My Trier family came to Washington and/or Ozaukee County in the mid 1800s. The only place I have them listed from Trier is on a wedding certificate which states "Trier-Cologne" as their birth place. The name is Wilhelm HOEHNEN who came with his wife, Agnes and their first born children: Wilhelm and Johann. They were leather workers or shoe makers, I believe. Also, nothing to do with my family but I always understood that there is a large population of Luxemburgers in Port Washington, Ozaukee County in Wisconsin. Maxine
Hello Werner & all I have many ancestors from these areas . Schlitz from Moetsch/Masholder that Werner kindly provided informations about. my 4th great grandfather Peter Schommer abt 1700 from Kell info provided by Josef Besch from the Sudlicher Hochwald database and Benny Dages translating info from Reiner Schmitt author of a familienbuch in the area of Hermeskeil . I recently found a website while surfing the internet for Nicholas Schneider from Kehrig near Mayen. These emigrants settled in Chicago and some ended up in Detroit Michigan . There was another group that went from Chicago To Winona Minnesota . I have ties to both groups. There seems to be several entries in World Connect , but no one ties them together . Johannes Peter Schneider Kehrig died Jan 1733. is the ultimate one on record. I have submitted my gedcom to the Sudlicher Hochwald site http://www.online-ofb.de/hochwald/karte.php? I provided documentation on my basic line in form of death certificates copies of Lds records on microfilm e tc. Additional info that I provide later for example the Schneiders will be based on other peoples research , that I truly believe to be accurate. . I would like to see a centralized database . You should be commended for your efforts to include all that information, but I still stand by my original statement (note emphasis): > *****Generally speaking*****, Familienbücher include information from the > records of a given parish If you look at all the Familienbücher listed on the WGfF website, the overwhelming majority of them include only information from church records. An exception doesn't make the rule. Kathy
This is not correct, I am writing at the project "Familienbuch parish of Utscheid". It includes the following towns, farms and villages (no cities): Buscht, Fischbach (near Neuerburg, now Fischbach-Oberraden), Glashuette (near Utscheid, founded 1763, destroyed in the 1970´s), Gotthelfsberg (founded arround 1850), Hamerskaul (founded arround 1850, Neuhaus (near Utscheid, founded arround 1830), Niederraden (near Neuerburg), Oberraden (near Neuerburg), Russdorf (near Utscheid), Utscheid (written Outscheid before 1972), Waldhof (near Utscheid, an very old farm) I have included this: nothary records, civil records (1796-1875), church books (1743-1900), census lists 1604-1659 from the country archive in Luxemburg City), several histoy books about the included villages, articles from the newspaper of Bitburg 1847-1872 (exists 1847-1945), cemetery datas, only some old documents from the time before 1800 from the state archive in Koblenz, private records from people in Utscheid, photos and old postcards from the towns in this book. Generally speaking, Familienbücher include information from the records of a given parish, i.e., all the baptisms, marriages, and deaths that were recorded in the parish registers. If a family moved from the town, the information about these events would no longer be recorded in that town's records, but in the records of the new town. So there is no reason to believe that the Nennig Familienbuch would shed any light on their activities in Koenigsmacher, Mondorf or whereever they lived after that. Good luck! Hi Folks! Any help finding the exact birthday of Leonard Terres/Therres, born in Fliessem (Fließem), Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany would be greatly appreciated! If my memory serves me right, (My records were destroyed) I believe he was born circa1855-57. Thanks, Ron In Covington, LA
Charlene, If your interested in a map of the area, I find ShtetlSeeker (http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/LocTown.asp) a better tool than GeoServ. ShtetlSeeker also gives a list of the local villages with distances from your village. It works best if you use a central location in the region you are searching, such as Trier (49m45d/06d38m). Poelich/Pölich is 10 miles ENE of Trier. Charlene Gaboriault wrote: > I am looking for information on a Mathias Kramer from Poelick, Trier, > Germany. Poelick is on his naturalized papers but I could not find > that on a map of Germany. Could/should that be Polich? It's probably Pölich (Poelich), a town on the Mosel. A good place to find the location of places in Germany is here: http://gov.genealogy.net/ There is a Familienbuch for Mehring, Longen-Lorsch, und Pölich. There are also church records for the parish of Mehring, which covered Pölich. Both are available at Family History Centers, run by the LDS church. See their catalog here: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp Check with the nearest Mormon church to find out how to obtain access to the films. Good luck! Kathy
My GERBER ancestors were from the Trier region and settled in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area of Minneapolis in the late 1850's. They were originally from Bombogen/Luxem towns and I have traced them back to 1700 in Bombogen. I also have PREISEN/PRUESSEN from Bitburg who also came to the Twin Cities. Tom Gerber
Hello, I am looking for information on a Mathias Kramer from Poelick, Trier, Germany. Poelick is on his naturalized papers but I could not find that on a map of Germany. Could/should that be Polich? He was born 15 April 1864 and immigrated to Boston, MA about 1887. I believe his parents were William (Wilhelm?) and Mary. Mathias married Magdalena Lorang 01 May 1892 in Boston.. Any information on Mathias would be appreciated. Thank you, Charlene
Hi, My ancestors, the Jacob Grun family: wife Maria Esch Grun and adult children immigrated in the early 1880s and settled in Chicago. Jacob's parents, Nicolas Grun and Margaretha Sabeler married 18 Jan 1810 in Remich and settled afterwards in Nennig, Saarland, Germany. Nicolas was born in Koenigsmacher, France; later moved to Mondorf, Luxembourg. It is possible Nicolas and Anton Grun (Belgium, Wisconsin immigrant) were half brothers (same father-different mothers). The Belgium, Wisconsin Grun family were referred to in a 1999 TRIER-ROOTS-L listing. The e-mail address for Melissa is no longer valid. I am interested in this relationship and also in finding where the family moved from Nennig, after 1864, (somewhere in Alsace-Lorraine), prior to immigrating to Chicago. There is a Nennig Familybook in the Diocese Archives Trier: Wagner, Heinrich, Family Album 1 Nennig 1696-1893. Possibly this information is in this book, but I do not know how to access it. Thanks in advance for any help. JoAnne

Hi Folks! Sadly, last Aug 29, 2005, most of my German genealogy records were destroyed by electrical power surges, six trees landing on my home, 6 inches of rain and four tornados spawned by Hurricane Katrina. Werner Lichter, a resident of Gilzem, helped me research much of my destroyed genealogy regarding my Therres/Terres family research. I owe him a great debt of gratitude for his efforts on my behalf. I do have some memory of some of my relatives, (Therres/Terres) who were born in Fliessem (Fließem), Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany and emigrated to Minnesota during the early 1880's. Leonard Terres/Therres, born circa 1855/58 was my g-grandfather. I'm at a disadvange regarding much knowledge about my relatives because my six sisters and I were abandoned by our parents in 1943. In 1999, after 56 years of separation, my sisters and I were reunited. Their thirst for knowledge regarding who their relatives were/are precipitated my interest in genealogy. I'm now living in an apartment in Covington, LA and ready to resume my genealogical research. With the help of you, the folks associated with this list, I'm confident that I can reconstruct my genealogical family tree. Thanks to all who help me with this tremendous effort! Best regards, Ron, now living in Covington, LA
Hi Americans, Yes, it WAS a tradition in Trier region that children got the first name, often added in front of the first name with Anna or Maria, Baptist or Johann. My grandfather Johann Lichter (1910-1978) gave me his first name. So I was called Werner, but I am baptisted Werner Johannes (that´s Johann long version, a short version would be Hans). My mother broke the tradition, but my fathers generation hat this. My uncle was nemed Matthias by his grandfather Matthias Lichter in 1934, my father Peter by his uncle Peter Heckelmann, but my aunt Monika (born 1946) was not named by any ancestors ! I think this tradition got a breake in the years 1914-1940 in Germany after World War I. Werner J. Perhaps (if > Catherine & Mary were sisters) they named their first sons after their > deceased father. It was the tradition in the Trier area to name children after their baptismal sponsors. Although grandparents were often sponsors for their grandchildren, that couldn't have happened in this instance if the grandfather were already deceased. The indexes to dozens of Familinbücher are online here: http://www.genealogienetz.de/vereine/wgff/trier/ Why don't you check them out to see if you can find any clues? It seems to me that the birth name of Antoinette is a big clue. It was a very unusual name in the Trier area. Serial emigration was very common, so another way to approach this is to find the hometowns of others who settled in their area of Iowa. Good luck!
