Check out http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sheboygan/1855cen5.htm It seems they probably arrived before 1855 as it looks like your Herman and maybe two boys (or maybe brothers of his) were living in Sheboygan City in 1855. I found Herman in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census for Sheboygan and Kaukauna census for 1900. None of them stated anything except he was born in Germany or Prussia. Nor did they have the immigration year. Too early. Nor did I see any children with him and Eva that might have been the two surviving children from Germany. But, not sure what age they were when they came over either. Do you know where the 5th child was born? Also, check out the US GenWeb pages for Sheboygan, WI at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sheboygan/sheboygn.htm Lots of hits for the names Jacob and Jacobs. I searched on www.castlegarden.org for Herman coming over, but was unsuccessful. I've never found my Nicolas Lofy that I know the exact ship and date he arrived on there either. But, have found other family members. That is only for if they came in to New York harbor, too. Mine did. I've got the passenger list. The family went from there to PA, then to IL. Do you know what port they arrived at? As others said, work your way backwards. Find obituaries, look for the supposed two children that came with them that survived the trip over, look for biographies, naturalization papers, marriage/birth records of the children, etc. Also, look for Jakobs spelling. Sometimes my Jacobs family was found that way. They were from Buedlich and Breidt, about 15 miles east of Trier. Sorry. Check out www.familysearch.org for films from Sheboygan and Outgamie Co, WI. Just to add my 2 cents worth, you may want to be alert to the possibility that the family name may be Jacoby. In the Germanic script, sometimes the "Y" got Americanized as an "S". There are a lot of resources on this continent that you could explore to find the origins of Herman and Elizabeth: - Look for their obituaries. They may list the town of origin. Don't overlook German language newspapers. - Look for Herman's Declaration of Intent. In some places, and at some times, these included town of origin. - Search the church records where they lived (Kaukauna?). On occasion, they list place of origin, but more importantly, use them to locate relatives and friends. These may be people with the same surname, but also baptismal and confirmation sponsors with other surnames. Serial migration was common-- people migrated to areas in the US where others from their German locale were already settled. With more names to search, you will have more opportunities to locate the town of origin. - Make connections with researchers of other German immigrants to Kaukauna to find out where their ancestors originated. - Find the passenger list for the ship they were on (They're indexed on Ancestry.com and castlegarden.org), then look to see if there were any other folks on the ship who ended up in Kaukauna. This again expands the list of compatriots you can search for origins. - And more. . . Ein fränkischer Großer, Vorfahre der Eifelgrafen und der Grafen von Are, erhielt Ripsdorf. 1121 hatte "Ripesdorp" schon eine Pfarrkirche, das Patronat lag bei der Abtei Steinfeld. 1203 findet man den Namen "Rypstorf", 1316 dann "Rypstorp" und im 15. Jh. "Rupstorp". Da Ripsdorf keine selbständige Herrschaft war, hat es auch keine zusammenhängende Geschichte. Gerhard von Loen, Herr zu Jülich und Graf zu Blankenheim, kaufte Ripsdorf im Jahre 1457. Zur Zeit Herzog Albas sollen spanische Truppen hier einquartiert gewesen sein. Der Besitz, außer Vellerhof, blieb bis zur Französischen Revolution in der Hand der Herzöge von Jülich. Im 16 Jh. wurde die Familie Metternich mit Gütern in Ripsdorf belehnt. 1726 wurde Hüngersdorf im Tausch gegen Bleibuir von Jülich an Blankenheim abgegeben. In der Französischen Zeit gehörte Ripsdorf zur Mairie Dollendorf im Canton Blankenheim. contains a "3-boxes collection" about the history of Ripsdorf and area arround Blankenheim. Hi, the county of Daun you mentioned is not the Kreis Daun in northern Rhineland-Palantinate. This area belonged to the archibishopric of Trier and was in those time 100% of all inhabitans roman catholic. There is another Daun, called Dhaun south in the Palatinate region of our county. The name is actually "Hochstetten-Dhaun" ! In the book "Die Auswanderungen aus Rheinpfalz und Saar", edited by Werner HACKER: "Werner Hacker, Auswanderungen aus Rheinpfalz und Saarland im 18. Jahrhundert, Konrad Theiss Verlag Stuttgart 1987, ISBN 3-8062-0487-X". This book contains about 10.000 names of emigrants from that area and a lot of informations about the area of Dhaun. Hi Johanna, I don't think the Maria and Christiana (twins) are who I am looking for, because I don't think that the Maria and Dorothea ever immigrated. I know that three of their siblings (that immigrated )Nikolous, Peter and Katherine all came to Scranton, Pa and never left. Catherine Andres married John Kloss and Peter Andres Sr married Johanna Martine and Nikolous Andres married Barbara Arend. Their father Johann Andres did immigrate to the U.S in 1897, after his wife Catherina (Kriesbach) died in Hermeskeil in Dec. 1880. Their were their three more siblings, Elizabeth born 3 Jan 1858 in Damflos, another Maria born 6 Jan. 1866 in Damflos and a son Johann born 11 April 1873 in Damflos. He died at birth. Maybe someone from Germany will have some information on the families of Maria (Andres) Kriesbach and Dorothea (Andres) Barthel. Ann, I have both Backes and Linden in my family tree. Gothard Backes was married to Eva Linden. Aurora, Illinois. Does that fit anywhere. Gothard's father was Jacob. Eva's father was Peter Linden.
