    3. FWIW, I too have often run across the name Jois, or Joes, used I believe as an abreviation for Johannes in 18 and 19th century baptismal records. BTW, when they do spell it out, the Latin version of the name was sometimes written joannis or even ioannis. -----Original Message----- From: MegNel1659@aol.com [mailto:MegNel1659@aol.com] Sent: Saturday, January 23, 1999 1:55 PM To: TRIER-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [TRIER-ROOTS-L] What's in a Name? 3. Hi. Does Trier take in the Koblenz area? I am looking for info on the families of WILLEMS, ZENDER AND ROSEN who came from Koblenz to Missouri in circa 1850. They became farmers in the Ferguson township of Missouri, near St. Louis. Any one else looking for these names? The Zender family was connected to Castle Schmidtburg in the Koblenz area. Thanks, Alex Koch

    2. Jim Bollinger
    3. Hi, Need help finding where my grandparents came from to board a ship HECLA in ANTWERP, BELGIUM. HEINRICH GRUNEWALD was born in TILL-MOYLAND, married an ANNA (maiden name unknown)and worked somewhere in Germany as a miner and then left wherever he was to go to Antwerp Belgium and he his wife Anna and my mother (3years old) ANNA MATILDA GRUNEWALD and my aunt MARGARET (9 month old)boarded the ship HECLA on 28 September 1881 and they arrived in PHILADELPHIA on 15 October 1881... The strange thing was that there were 163 miners on board of 300 adults which included wives...Almost the whole passenger list were miners... Makes me wonder where did they all come from? Why did they all leave together at the same time in the same ship? Were they offered a better job in America? If yes; who was it that was trying to get them over here? Were they all leaving because their mines were closing? I can't get any information about the mines and I think that they must have come from some coal mines in the Ruhr Valley...Maybe from around Aachen? I sure would appreciate any help that anyone can shed on this mystery. Jim Bollinger jimb@evcom.net

    2. Travel from the interior to the North coast of Europe usually took place along the rivers and tributaries that fed the North Sea. Overland travel was still perilous, and trains had not penetrated the interior at that time. Depending on weather the journey might require six-weeks or six-days. Hope it helps. JJ Korman
