    1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] Re: TRIER-ROOTS-D Digest V99 #45
    2. Walter Gaddis
    3. Hello Phil, I, also, had the same family story that my family left from Antwerp but landed in PA on 1 Feb 1867. When I actually found them on a passenger list they left from Liverpool, England and landed in New York harbor on 3 Mar 1867 (must have left on 1 Feb 1867.) My family came from the Trier region. I had never thought to look at Liverpool ships. I wouldn't limit myself to looking at Antwerp only. It was supposedly cheaper to leave from Liverpool per some people on TheShipsList-L. I found the ship by finding my gg grandfather's intent to naturalize through my local Family History Center. It stated he landed in NY harbor on 14 Mar 1867. I went from there. Hope this helps. 3. I have the following ancestors: Bernard Theisen dit Theis son: Jean Theisen dit Theis granddaughter: Anna Theis I understand that "dit" means "a.k.a." so Bernard and Jean went by Theis as their last name even though it was really Theis. Has anyone else come across this in their own research? What possible reasons could there be for going by a shortened last name? To distinguish themselves from other Theisen's in town, perhaps? Or maybe they are part of that Theisen family, but there were other people with similar names and so they did this to distinguish themselves? Or another possible reason? Also, this same question has come up on the Nebraska Roots rootsweb list for another person. Does the "dit" not pass along to female descendants? 2. Louise Bradshaw
    3. Phil Pichotta: My GGGrandparents came also in 1847 with their 6 children - they were from Schmidt & Harscheidt, near Aachen/Monshau, Germany. They also left from Antwerp, Belgium - aboard the "Ontario", and arrived in NY on 21 Sept 1847. Ship Master: Aug. D. Holmes. 216 Passengers were on board, including 8 in the cabin. My family's name was LENNARTZ (Md to LAUSCHER) - they settled in South Milwaukee and later moved to Racine County. It is possible this is the same ship. The LENNARTZ name was changed to LEONARD in the late 1800's, and was my maiden name. This information was found in "NY Passenger List 1820-1897." Hope this information will help you. 3. My great-great-grandparents Jacques Bernardy (1805-1883) and Marguerite Senninger (1805-1885) emigrated to the US with their 4 children (Jacques, Barbara, Nicholas, Anna) in 1847. Jacques was from Wintrange, Remich, Luxembourg and was the son of Francis Bernardy and Marie Weber. He apparently had 1 brother Pierre and 2 sisters, Eve and Marguerite but I don't have any information about them. Jacques and Marguerite and family went through Buffalo, NY and settled in Belgium, WI (north of Milwaukee). The Buffalo route tends to indicate that they landed in New York City and took the Erie Canal to Buffalo and then the Great Lakes to WI. I have information that they left from Antwerp on a voyage that took 52 days. I reviewed the ship passenger lists for ships from Antwerp to NY in 1847 at the US Nat. Archives but wasn't able to find their names. It is possible that I missed the ship or couldn't read the handwriting. I believe that there were quite a few Luxembourgers who emigrated about that time. Can anyone tell me what ships they came on and when they landed at NY? This might help me go back and recheck the passenger lists. Any help would be appreciated.

    1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] NEUBECKER
    2. Hi - I am looking for information on my wife's family, NEUBECKER. We have traced her family back to a Nicolas NEUBECKER in Bruce Co., Ontario, Canada. Nicolas appears in the 1861 census with his wife Catherine (KARTES) and several children. The census indicates that Nicolas was born in France abt. 1820. I also found a Stephanus (Stephen) NEUBECKER in the same township and county in Ontario with his wife Margareta (WIEGERS). Stephen NEUBECKER was born about 1824 also in France. I think that they are brothers but I have not found any definitive connection yet. I have found records that Stephen was in Canada in 1851 and possibly earlier. I think that they may have come to Canada from Europe in the 1840s. I have looked for records on Nicolas and Stephen in France but I have not had any luck. It looks like the Moselle area of Lorraine had the highest concentration of NEUBECKERs. I have also noticed that most NEUBECKERs are located in the area covered by the TRIER-ROOTS-L mailing list which is adjacent to Moselle, Lorraine, France. Does anyone have NEUBECKER family connections in the area? Maybe there is a connection. Thanks, Jerry Sandoval
