I am looking for a Frederick Young(Jung) born 1834 Bavaria and his wife Catherine(I do not know her maiden name), they emigrated from the Alsace or Lorraine area between 1850-1860 to Rochester, New York. I was concentrating my research in the Baden and Wuertemburg area without any luck, my mother seems to remember family members saying they were from the Lorraine area, but on the 1860 census Frederick Young lists he was born in Bavaria. There is no listing for a Frederick Young on the Baden-Wuertemburg emigration lists and no listing for him in the Alsace-Lorraine emigration book. I have recently joined this list, because from other postings I have seen, there are quite a few Jungs in the Trier area that this list covers. Michelle Nardone kitkat1@ptdprolog.net
Can anyone tell me about the book "Immigrants from Trrier to America? What is in it and where can I find it? Also, who are the author and publisher? Thanks.
It won't work because all attachments are filtered out of Rootsweb before they ever try to get to the lists. I am one who have to delete those messages before they can even get to the lists. W. I am researching my ancestors MUELLER and BARTH in Bosen and Soetern. One of the earlier links is a Johannes ZUMBRO. He came to Soetern from Graubuenden, Switzerland, some time before 1720, married Anna Barbara and had 3 children, Johannes Adam, Johannes and Johann Michel. A search of telephone listings in Graubuenden and Switzerland did not produce any Zumbros. Any help or suggestion on how to proceed would be greatly apreciated. Brigitte

This is from this week's Rootsweb Review issue which is distributed freely from Rootsweb. All sponsors, donors, listowners get it already. Subscribers can get it by request (rootsweb-review-l@rootsweb.com) and subscribe in message text. It is sent out once a week. It is always filled with interesting information including this one below - (hey, those of you who contacted me in past - you know where your Rootsweb $$ went to!). NEWS AND NOTES FROM ROOTSWEB WHERE HAVE ALL THE ROOTSWEB ADMINS BEEN? RootsWeb users may have noticed that, for about the last six weeks, RootsWeb's system administrators have been hard to find and generally a bit wild-eyed and stressed when they appeared in public. The reason is that the load on our servers jumped immediately after Christmas. For example, mailing list traffic we handle jumped from about 119 million deliveries in November to about 154 million pieces in January. That's almost a 30% leap. Although we haven't run the Web statistics for January yet, we suspect Web traffic jumped a similar amount. Since December, to handle the load, RootsWeb has brought online: o A new and much faster main Web server. o A new FTP server. o A new and much faster GenConnect server. o A new and much faster Surname Helper server. o A new and much faster RootsWeb Surname List (RSL) and Obituary Daily Times server. o A new server for the FreeBMD British records project. o A new server for providing personalized search engines for the Webmasters of genealogical sites. It has been a Herculean task to bring all those machines online in just a few weeks, and we aren't through yet. In the next few weeks we need to: o Upgrade the "lists2" listserver's processor and memory (costs $2,000). o Build a new "lists3" listserver (costs $4,000). o Build a faster server to carry most of the load currently being handled by the "searches" search engine server (costs $12,000). o Add a fast "RAID" disk array to the GenConnect server (costs $6,000). We mention the costs because these needed upgrades and new servers currently are not funded. By making a financial contribution to RootsWeb, you can help us provide more mailing lists, more searchable data files, and more GenConnect boards for the whole community to use. Hello Jean Winslow: You asked how does one know if a certain coat of arms is the correct one. I guess the question you have to ask yourself is, the correct one for what? Even if you can trace you family history back to the person mentioned in the citation, that in itself doesn't mean that somehow that crest is the "family coat of arms". For one thing, most grants of arms were not inheritable, and when they were, they were usually passed on to the eldest son. In short, people almost always know if they have a true family crest or coat of arms, usually because people were always addressing their father as "Lord Smith" or "Graf von Richtoven" insteady of "Hey, Joe". That's not to say that grants of arms aren't genealogical interesting or important; clearly they are. And they do make a nice starting off point for designing a personal "family crest" for decorative purposes. Anyway, to answer your implied question, the citations for most grants of arms in German speaking countries can be looked up in a series of reference works called Siebmacher Wappenbu"cher. These books, some of which date back centuries, have been republished in indexed collections, and indexes themselves published as multiple volumes. They will say who was given the grant of arms, what it was for, and describe the crest in heraldic terms. If you are fortunate enough to live near a big city or university with a large library, you should be able to at least look up the citation for the original grant of arms and see who it was for. Cheers, Mark J. L. Lesmeister, who is probably no relation whatsover to the Nicolaus Lesmeister who was given a title and grant of arms by the Emperor in 1491. -----Original Message----- From: Jean Winslow [mailto:jean@san.rr.com] Sent: Wednesday, February 10, 1999 4:42 PM To: TRIER-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [TRIER-ROOTS-L] Coats of Arms Dear Sirs: I received a description of a family shiedl or coat of arms from a distant relative. I am researching the DIKEMAN surname (I have been told the name was americanized from DIECKMANN - but am not sure of the spelling). Simon Henry (Heinrich) Dikeman (b. Aug 1829) listed his birthplace as either Westphalia, Prussia, or Germany on different U.S. Census' and emigrated to the United States ca. 1847. His wife Anna (b.Aug 1825) listed her birthplace as Prussia or Germany. They eventually settled in Rough and Ready, California, USA. Does anyone have information on them before they came to the United States or before they settled in Rough and Ready, CA? I apologize if I have sent a duplicate message. I think I sent it to the wrong place last time.

Will the person who has the film on emmigration from Trier, please look up John Martini and Peter Martini? They probably emmigrated during the period of 1870-1885. When they came to the US, they settled in Stearns County in Minnesota. Thanks Tom Knops
Russell Theis@CHEDSZURICH 10.02.99 10:21 Hi Sharon, Regarding your question about the use of "dit"... I have never run across "dit" because I have never done any work in French sources, but is it possible that it has a meaning like the Latin "mode" or "sive", which were used a lot to when a man married into a family and took their name as his? In other words, Bernard Theisen married into the Theis family, rather than just having a shortening of his name because of convenience or whatever? I've done a lot of work in church archives where even the same priest would sometimes use one name, sometimes the other. Maybe it depended upon how important the person was before coming into a family (having made an impression already using his original name), making the old usage hang on longer? I'd hesitate to say that it didn't pass on to female descendents on the basis of just these 3 names. My experience has been that it didn't pass on to sons either. But how 'bout if Jean (the son) were from a first marriage of Bernard, making him a Theisen. When Bernard married a Theis, his son also got the "dir" tacked on. Possible? As for changing his name to THEIS --- who wouldn't want to???? ;-) ;-) Would be interested in sharing Theis-info incidently. Give a toot! Russ Theis in Zürich

I have pity on the person with the film on emmigration from Trier. However, I would sure appreciate a lookup for Peter Bach, emmigrated from Trier Distr. in 1852. He was twenty or 21 and traveling alone (as far as we know). Thanks, Sandi
