    1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] New to List
    2. Jenny Kilen
    3. I am very new to this list and fairly new to genealogy. I was wondering if anyone could help me. My grandfather came to Iowa in 1907 from Burglinster, Luxembourg. I don't know how to obtain information from there. I know my great-grandfather's name and still have relatives in Luxembourg but they have no information. My father went over to visit but the headstones are unreadable. He said he thought that the records were destroyed in the war. Where do I begin? Sorry this is so long. Surname is SCHUDER, Nickolas and Jacob. Thank you for any help. 1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] Place search helper
    2. Russell Theis@CHEDSZURICH 13.03.99 01:04 Hi, People! I've noticed that many letters are from people looking for the villages or trying to correct their spellings of the places their ancestors came from. Arthur Teschler at the Uni in Giessen, Germany, has an excelent automated service that would probably help a lot of these people, because it accepts "wild-cards", It's an e-mail service which will respond with either: SPECIFICS (if you have requested a particular place) or a list of POSSIBILITIES (if you've used wild-cards) that you can choose from and resubmit. For example, if you're looking for Geichlingen, you can ask about: "Geichlingen" which will only list all the Geichlingens But if you're just know it's Geich-something, you can submit "Geich*" which will list all places starting with GEICH: Geichlingen, Geichenburg,Geichdorf, etc. "G*" which will list ALL places starting with -G-. With the wild cards, you see all the possibilites and can choose individual places in a second pass. Here, for example, is the result of a query for Werden: Prefix: Werden Werden Part of: Essen GKZ : 05 1 13 000 County : | | +---- Essen {E} (kreisfrei/independent) RegBez : | +------- D"usseldorf Land : +--------- Nordrhein-Westfalen ZIP : 45239 Locat : (Essen) 51d28m N 7d01m E Maps : TK25 4508 Essen TK50 L4508 Essen Euro Ha40 - If you haven't used this service before send a message to geo@genealogy.net with the single word INFO in the subject line. Thanks, Arthur! And good hunting, people! Russ in Zürich

Perhaps these web sites will be of use to you: http://www.etat.lu/BNL/ National Library site (under construction) http://www.igd-leo.lu/ Institut Grand Duchy web site http://www.etat.lu/AN/ National Archives of Luxemborg web site E-mail address for the Archives d'etat (national Archives): archives.nationales@mc.etat.lu The National Archives are open M-F and Sat. mornings. 3. Go to Luxembourg National Archives. They have microfilms of birth, marriage and death indexes of all communes (civil records). Marriage record will show where Mathias Steffen was born. The civil records of Luxembourg, France and southwest Germany are very excellent resource of information after all it was Napoleon who imposed Civil Registration in all territories his armies occupied for long time. The President of the National Archives is very "Genealogist". He is Jean Claude Mueller. W. Karen - Each of the above entries are merely the date of an edition of the Luxemburger Gazette and the page number in that edition where a reference to Brown County was made. There is no particular reason to believe that these are obituary dates... though I would guess that similar entries often occurred on similar page numbers. I recall that I was once told that page 5 was often used to announce arrivals of new immigrants, but it could also be a page where obits are listed too. Tom

    1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] Obituaries - Minnesota - Brown County
    2. Hi. I was graciously sent copies of John HOFFMAN names from *Luxembourgers in the New World." Unfortunately, none of them were mine. My John Hoffman's obituary was in the Little Falls Herald (Minn) in 1907. I notice there 6 obituaries dates (is that what they are?) listed under Brown County in the "Luxembourg in the New World": 26/11/1878, 5 (what does the 5 represent?) 25/02/1879, 5 18/11/1884, 5 20/11/1888, 4 12/3/1889, 5 26/06/1900, 5 I would like to determine, somehow, the obituaries of those people listed, to see if possible they say where in Luxembourg they came from. I know it would be helpful if I could have the names, but they were not available. Does someone on the list have access to the Little Falls Herald obituaries (I can't find them on the web) and could look these up for me? Or, an address of others to whom I could write? Thanks again. 1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] Neustadt area (Rheinland-Pfalz)
    2. Is anyone else researching in an area within about 10 miles (15 km) of Neustadt? If so, I'd like to discuss research suggestions. My GENIUS and SCHUMAN families lived near Neustadt before emigrating to the U.S. in 1851. I'd like to get some advice on how I might find out where they were from. Are there any centralized church records or archive records for this specific area? Thanks for any help, Pam

    2. Since I am researching my ZIEGELE surname in Luxembourg, when I saw this article in an old "August 1997" Readers Digest. (Reprinted from Newsweek) it caught my eye. I thought I would pass it along for those of you that may be interested. :-) Notes from all over ............................ LUXEMBOURG So much for the adage "You can't take it with you." The Luxembourg-based Prometh Societ'e, a stock corporation, is now offering "reincarnation accounts" for the rich who'd rather not start from scratch the next time around. This "seed capital for your next life" (minimum account size: $30,000) is redeemable within 23 years of death--provided that the new you knows a few key personal facts. While you are gone, Prometh recommends a conservative investment portfolio, Said a spokesman, "You shouldn't be speculating while your soul wanders." Frank

    1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] Victor KUHL; emmigrated from Rhineland, GER
    2. User
    3. Hello everyone First let me apologize for having so little of information for my first posting, but it is really all I have at the moment. I'm hoping someone can help me find more so I can further my research on this name. This research is being done for my son-in-law Michael who knows very little of his family and would like to know more to share with his wife and children. I'm told that Michael's great grandfather's name was VICTOR VALENTINE KUHL and that he was born somewhere in Germany. He supposedly emmigrated over to the USA at some point in time before 1913, as he had children born in the USA at that time. The one son's name I know of is JOHN RICHARD KUHL I, b. 1913 in Omaha, NE and m. 25 Dec 1945 in Omaha, NE to Vera Rodgers, b. 1924 Ottawa, KS. I had someone check an emmigration CD for me and they said the only KUHL they found was a HENRY KUHL who came over in 1848. VICTOR, I'm assuming would have been born sometime around the 1860's or so, but I don't know. Anything would be greatly appreciated at this time as I have no idea in the world where to check online for information for him or how to search the German records. Thank you all in advance. The Mother-In-Law Linda Spivey-Bjorklund
