    1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] Immigration
    2. Lloyd Mans
    3. I am new on this so maybe this has been run before. Anyone who is searching for Immigration information from GERMANY or LUXEMBOURG should see Glazier and Filby's "Germans To America". There are 60 volumes that I know of that start with January 1, 1850 and go to May, 1881. All books are indexed in the back by surnames. The information given is Port of Departure, Name of Ship, Date and Port of Arrival as well as names and ages of passengers. Larger city libraries and some Historical Centers should have all these books. I found my Luxembourg ancestors in one of these books. Lloyd R. With us was our Aunt , sister of our father, a maiden lady, Susanna Kieffer, also Franz Dock of P..L Prussia, intended husband of Magdelena Kieffer, afterward married. After all this Lorenzo goes into where they lived, what he did and his time in the Civil War, he enlisted in Kansas. I do not know if his Aunt Susanna ever married here in the states but his sister Margaretha married someone with the last name of Fastnacht and as stated Magdelena married Franz Dock. I also know that John Kieffer married Caroline Wust. The Kieffer family was extremely active in St. Peter's on Fifth. They had a furniture business on Girard and some of John's children became funeral directors in that area.

    1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] Susanna Thill of Cruchten
    2. Married to Dominique Decker sometime before 1846, first child of couple is born in Cruchten February of 1846. Have looked at all Table Decennales for Mersch, Wiltz, and Diekrich, but cannot find record for marriage. Dominique Decker died March of 1895. Susanna Thill appears to have died after 1900 - she is not listed in Table Decennales. Two of their children died in Ettlebruck in 1920's per funeral cards/ Cannot work on the Thill branch without info re Susanna's parents. Thought death certificate would indicate village of birth. Is it possible to send to Lux for a death certificate post 1900? If so need address and cost.

Also, the last time I talked to one he would NOT copy the page, I had to photograph it. He was afraid of the copier's light ruining the paper. However, you can probably look at copies of the same church books he would use at your local LDS (Mormon) Family Histor Center. The LDS library in Salt Lake City has microfilms of the church books and civil records from all over the world, including most villages in Germany. You rent copies the film for a 6 week period for about $3.25. To find the closest FHC look at (new) http://www.familysearch.org/Browse/browse_places2.asp or (old) http://www.deseretbook.com/famhis/. There is an LDS research URL coming on line. It is still in test, but there are some data available for public use. The first records they appear to have made available are their Ancesrty© File and their IGI© File. The LDS resource to help you find what data are available for your villages is the Family History Library Catalog is not online yet. The URL is http://www.familysearch.org or http://www.familysearch.com. Both go to the same place. Fred H. Held mailto:fhheld@freewwweb.com

    2. Howard Bauer
    3. My great-grandfather Henry Alvin Mehrkens was born in Lower Saxony, Germany and migrated to the USA about 1873. He was born in September 1848 in Neukloster-Bliedersdorf parish or in Horneberg parish and may be the Albert Heinrich Mehrkens born on Sept. 8, 1848 in Neukloster-Bliedersdorf. He may have made his name more "American" in the USA. His wife, a cousin, was born in Neukloster-Bliedersdorf or Horneberg in July 1854. She was born Louise Willamina Mehrkens. They were married and migrated to the USA in 1873. Information from the Parish register on their births or their wedding would be valuable for genealogical research and to determine if Henry Alvin Mehrkens is actually Albert Heinrich Mehrkens. Guidance on how to contact the current pastors of these parishes would also be helpful. I look forward to hearing from anyone who can help. Respectfully, Howard Bauer, Portland, Oregon, USA Hallo, Ich heisse Howard Bauer. 1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] Another Obit - Bender
    2. This is the daughter of the lady in the previous obit. that I posted. Notice that she is also listed as coming from Geisfeldt, Germany but this time the place name is spelled differently. Mrs. Anna Bender Former Resident Dies in St. Cloud, Minnesota A telegram received in this city Sunday stated that Mrs. Anna Bender, who formally resided in this city died at St. Clouds that morning. Mrs. Bender had been in very poor health since last winter when she was stricken with paralysis, the announcement does not come unexpectedly to friends and relatives in this city. The deceased was about sixty-seven years of age and was born in Geisfedlt, Germany. Her first husband, John Knope, died about twenty years ago, when the family home was at Sharon. Later, she married Balthaser Bender, who passed away about eight years ago. Mrs. Bender has been living in St. Cloud for about two years. She is survived by four children, John Knope, Denver, Colorado; August Knope, and Miss Elizabeth Knope St. Cloud, Minnesota; and Mrs. Nicholas Trierweiler, who resides near Stanley. He also leaves a brother Peter Bungert of the town of Sharon and a sister, F. X. Ford of Mankato, Washington. Another brother, Nicholas Bungert, died at his home near Marathon City, June 16, last. The body arrived in the city on Monday and was taken to the home of Stephen Harrer, 404 Illinois Avenue in this city Wednesday. Mitch Trier POB 415 Lisle, IL 60532 paxpooh@aol.com

    1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] Bungert Obit
    2. I am posting this to see if anyone can help me with the place names and for posterity if anyone ever needs this info when they are searching the list archives. My questions follow the text >From Stevens Point Daily journal 9/25/1897 Death of Mrs. Peter Bungert Mrs. Peter Bungert was born in Geisffeld, Kries Trier, Reihnfreussen, Germany on May 18, 1825. Her maiden name was Annie Knope and she was a cousin to the late N. Knope whose death occurred Saturday. She was married to Peter Bungert on February 1, 1848 in her native town and continued to reside there until April 1872; when the family moved to the farm in Sharon where they have continued to reside ever since. About five years ago she suffered two light strokes of paralysis which left her in a delicate condition and she continued to grow constantly weaker until the end. She died Sunday evening at 7:15 o'clock. The funeral which was largely attended was Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock from St. Martin's German Catholic church of Ellis, Rev. J.A. Bourgmeyer of Custer officiating. The pall bearers were Peter Trierweieler, Adam Welch, Peter Schliesman, and Sebastian Simbauer. The Bungert home is located about two miles northwest of Ellis. The deceased leaves a husband, aged 75 years, and four grown children, Mrs. B Bender and Peter Bungert of Sharon and N. Bungert and Mrs. Frank Ford of this city. Annie Knope is a direct ancestor of mine. This obituary is one of the best items of proof that the family came from Trier but I don't recognize or understand the rest of the place names. I assume that Geisffeld, Kries Trier, Reihnfreussen, Germany is city, county, state, country but I would appreciate it if anyone knows what Geisffeld or Reihnfreussen are and why Kries Trier is listed as one item. Next, are the pace names spelled right. On the same page as this obituary is the obituary of her cousin, Nicholas. The obituaries have some of the same people listed but the peoples names are spelled differently. (On the same page!) Just as an aside, notice the list of pall bearers. I guess Steven's Point was a German community at the time. Any thoughts? Mitch Trier POB 415 Lisle, IL 60532 paxpooh@aol.com
