    1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] Kliding and Hendges family
    2. Hi again, OSTLUNDR. Glad you have solved the mystery of our Hendges connection. If you can figure out the connection of yet another John Hendges b. 1812 Prussia>OH>MI, there is another researcher who would be most grateful. Most males in this family seemed to be named John and it's hard to tell one from another. I saw that someone else had responded to your question on whereabouts of Kliding with two sites where you can get maps -- no matter how small the village. I happen to use Expedia These maps are great documentation for your research, especially if you have a color printer. Kliding appears to be located on the Mosel River between Wittlich and Koblenz, a bit closer to Wittlich. I understand that although there was a Catholic church in this village, church records are not available except perhaps through the diocese of Trier. I look forward to hearing from you. Deb

I know nothing about anything, really! The STEFFEN, Elizabeth that I am seaching for comes from Koblenz, and was born about 1841 - sometime before or around 1871, she migrated to the UK. She married John LEADER there, before or around 1871! I do not know whether she was Catholic or Protestant (Lutheran or Anglican). So, it looks like we are in the same boat, at this stage! Hopefully yours, Leo Nordal Moosomin, SK S0G 3N0 Canada

Their daughter Amalia KOFFSKE baptized Jan 6 1817 - Katholisch * Paderborn, Lichtenav, Westfalen, PR. I don't know where to go from this record. Does anyone have a suggestion to send me in any direction? If is this is a relative, it makes sense that my GGrandfather Leonard Koffski might have actually been born in Netherlands instead of Poland as originally believed. Kay Koffski Lane --

    1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] USE OF VULGO or COND. in FAMILIENBUCH ???
    2. A request for an assist from the list please. I am currently reading an LDS film of a German Familienbuch, circa 1722 to 1800 from Kr. Bitburg, Regbez Trier. Several of the entries in the Familienbuch listings read as follows: (the first name being the husband, the second being the wife; oo = married); BESENIUS Leonhard, oo Dymer vulgo Schomptges; DYMER cond. Schontges oo Schomtges Maria; Thomas DIMER cond Schontger Joh., oo Neu cond Goeders Maria; DYMER Vulgo Schomptges, Daniel oo Lentzen cond. Hartz Maria Katherina; There are also DYMERS without the vulgo/cond who oo females without the vulgo/cond. Thode's says that cond. is the abbreviation for the Latin " also know as" or "occupation" or "station in life"; and that vulgo (Latin) for "commonly known as"; "in the vernacular"; "called"; however he shows no listing for Schomptges, Schomtges, Schontger, Schontges as an occupation. There are no listings for Schomptges etc as family names in the Familienbuch. The vulgo/cond. notation isn't used with other families in the Familienbuch. I will be grateful for any insight or explanation about this kind of listing. Thanks for your help, Patt Gaetani

    3. I have traced my EITING family to a "Zeuwent". I believe this may be current day Zieuwent, which is near Lichtenvoorde, Netherlands. This is about 18 km NNW of Bocholt, Germany, and about 30 km SW of Enschede, Netherlands. They left Zeuwent May 7, 1846, arrived in Boston USA on July 20, 1846, and moved on to Brown County Wisconsin in spring of 1850. What Catholic church would the people of Zieuwent have attended? Anybody know of pre-1846 records available for Zieuwent area? Thanks for any help. Andy Wegner, Winneconne, Wisconsin.
