    1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] John Hoffman name in Hobscheid/Eischen
    2. I have someone going through the Luxembourg film at the LDS finding all HOFFMAN names to see if I can locate my John HOFFMAN, born 1827-1834, son of Peter and Eva HOFFMAN. On film # 1739907 item 2-4, in the ten year index for Hobscheid which included Eischen, the following Hoffman names appeared: Christenings hoffman, Anne Catherine b. 26 Janvier 1822 #222 Hoffman, Jean b. 28 Aout 1823 #246 Hoffman, Henri b. 29 Novembre 1824 #247 Hoffman, Pierre b. 27 Novembre 1826 #248 Hoffman, Pierre b. 2 Septembre 1826 #249 Hoffman, Susanne b. 10 Octobre 1827 #250 Hoffman, Catherine b. 30 Mars 1828 #251 Hoffman, Barbe b. 20 Septembre 1828 #252 Hoffman, Michel b. 21 Aout 1832 #253 Hofman, Michel b. 20 Novembre 1830 #254 Hofman, Susanne b. Avil 1830 #255 She determined that the FHL did not have the actual christenings from this location until 1839 so she couldn't check to see who the parents were on any of the above. She also found a death for a Jean Pieire Hoffman d. 9 Janvier 1827 #169. She said the FHL does not have deaths before 1839, the above name apparently an exception. Does anyone know the best way I can determine the parent's names of this Jean HOFFMAN (and the others in this family)? Where I can locate birth records of about 1823-1834 showing parent names? Also, if no one minds, I am going to post the HOFFMAN names she finds in case anyone else can use the information. Thanks again Karen

    1. Re: [TRIER-ROOTS-L] Luxembourger Gazette
    2. Jeanie, The "Luxemburger Gazette" was a German-language newspaper based in Dubuque, Iowa which was published from August 4, 1871 through 1918. "Luxembourgers in the New World" is a 1987 two-volume reedition based on the work of Nicholas Gonner's "Die Luxemburger in der Neuen Welt", originally published in 1889, volume 2 of which includes a 682-page index to the Gazette. The book was originally written by Gonner and reeditioned by editors Jean Ensch, Jean-Claude Muller, and Robert E. Owen. As you spell the name, "Schetgen" appears in the Gazette index only once: "SCHETGEN 28.06.1917, 5" which means that the June 28, 1917 issue of the Gazette mentions the surname "Schetgen" on page 5. There are similar surnames listed in the index, including the following: SCHENTGEN, Michel SCHENTGEN, Nick SCHENTGEN, Nicolas SCHENTGEN, Nicolas SCHENTGEN, Nikolas SHILTGEN, John Joey Schumacher P.O. 2. Hi: Did the Wilmes family that you are referring settle in the Oakdale or Osseo areas in Minnesota. If so there are some links I believe. There was a group of families from the Diekirch/ Gilsdorf areas that settled near Oakdale, MN. In addition other families such as Thurmes, Schiltgen etc. came from the same area. Also somehow there is a Marschall family from the Vermillion/Hastings and Shakopee areas that are connected. Bob Olson

    3. What part of the USA did your Wilmes come to?-- I couldn't find any DIELIRCH in Germany but there is a DIELKIRCHEN in Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. My father's sister Anna Elizabeth Schneider married an Aloyious Wilmes in Springfield, Minnesota - I assume that was the marriage site. She was born in Schilligkau, Bohemia, Austria and came to USA in 1894 with her parents and 3 of her siblings. Wilmes was born in 1893. They had 5 children. That's all I know about this Wilmes. 1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] ELKMANN Family in Westphalia
    2. I am looking for the family ELKMANN in Westphalia. According to his 1921 application for a marriage license (in NY), my grandfather Gustav Elkmann was born in 1895 in Senaktau Germany. His father was Johann and mother Maria Bohile. Johann is listed as being born in Germany and Maria as being born in France. Family tradition is that he was from the region north of Cologne. I don't have any idea where Senaktau might be and can't find it on any of my maps of Germany. Gustav is supposed to have had 7 brothers and a sister, Evangeline. All of the brothers were supposed to have been killed in WW1. From what I have been able to learn, there are now very few Elkmann's remaining in Germany. Paul Elkmann pje@nrc.gov
