Looking for the country of origin for the family name of SCHADECK / SHADECK. Four brothers and some sisters came to US in 1880's. MY ggf told fibs about where he was born. Sometimes he said Luxembourg, sometimes Trier, sometimes Saarbrucken. Anyone ever hear of that name?? Louise S. Novello Northwest of Chicago, Illinois, USA

Mary, I currently have the microfilm of the church records for Schoendorf (which covers Ollmuth) checked out at the FHC. Although the film I have covers only ~1790-1886, I have seen the names PLUNIEN, HERMSDORF, HILGERT, JAECKELS and BACKES throughout the records. I believe the FHC has another film with earlier dates. Hope this helps, Kathy Lenerz > Subject: [TRIER-ROOTS-L] Re: TRIER-ROOTS-D Digest V99 #207 > Date: Mon, 12 Jul 1999 08:37:11 -0700 > From: Rick and Mary Thrasher <thrashin@west.net> > To: TRIER-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com > > Hello everyone! > > Just thought I would post my names, as I have discovered more with the help of my > "FOLs". --part1_db7d7885.24bbc81c_boundary Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Kay, we have a number of Margaret Schutz's in our tree. My great-grandfather Mathias Schutz, had a sister Margaret Schutz born 1/1851. I believe she married a Marlin STEFFANS. Their parents Johann SCHUTZ and Catharina REINERT. Mathias married Margaret KOTZ. They had a daughter Margaret SCHUTZ born 7/6/1876. She married Jacob WINTERSDORF. Are you from the missing Wintersdorf family which moved to Indiana? Many living family members remember visits to Indiana. My great grandmother was born Margaret SCHUETZ. I have relatives who were members of both St Joseph's in Wilmette and St Michael's in Chicago. They were SCHUETZ, BALMES, GEMSKIE family members, among others. Someone in my extended family married BORRE. And finally, I have ancestors who lived in Nonnweiler. I'm wondering if there is more than a coincidental connection between our families. If you would like to pursue this possible connection, please email me. In the meantime, I will refresh my mind on this branch of my family by reviewing my notebooks on them. Then I will be able to be more specific on the possible relationship. I hope to hear from you. The name DOLWET is found in the area. The French town of Waldwisse is nearby.

Karen, while researching my family (SCHUTZ, REINERT, BEITZEL) in Wilmette (St. Joseph's) and Chicago (St. Michael's, St. Alphonsus), I found a Mary GARD. However this GARD is from St. Joseph's in Wilmette. Here's the info I have is on a Mary GARD: daughter of Wilhelm Gard and Catharine. Mary married a John BORRE in February 1829 in Nonnweiler, Germany. Mary's daughter married a REINERT. Lauri
Hi: I have a 1781 map of the region. In looking at what would be the old "Prevoste de Thionville", i.e., a province that is now modern-day France, bordering the southeasternmost area of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg: I find ANOTHER Beringen/Bertrange (in other words, I am not talking about anything by that name which would be in today's Grand Duchy of Luxembourg). I see that several village names are repeated from Grand Duchy (such as Illingen). This village would be just northeast of Richemont, on the other side of the Moselle River. Don't know if this helps. Regards, Melissa (Source: LeDuche de Luxembourg, Divise en Quartier Walon, et Allemand, 1781, Paris)
List Members, The Habsburg's Vienna Emigration Registry 15 May 1770 entry lists my gggggrandfather, Nicolaus Dolvik, as originating in Boringen, Lorraine. So here is my problem. I need a bit of help determining if the current Beringen, Luxembourg may have been part of Lorraine in 1770 and the city referenced in the emigration registry. Careful search of the Lorraine area maps of the time shows no Boringen or any city by that exact name and the LDS FHCs have no church registry information listed under that name either. However, because Lothringen extended into present day Luxembourg in 1770 and Lothringen would have encompassed Beringen within its 1770 boundaries, is "Beringen" the most likely candidate for Nicolaus Dolvik's research studies? Or am I missing a Boringen, Lothringen which may have disappeared since the 1770 registry entry? Hi Jay, In particular, which Michels and which Feller? Both names are connected to my family in Osburg. There are Feller in Chicago, along with the Gards, Resch, Meyer and Neufing families. Peter Feller and Margaretha Gard were Godparents at the baptism of Peter Neifing in 1901 at St. Michaels Parrish in Chicago. Three of the parrishes a majority of my family were found, were St. Michael's, St. Joseph's on Cleveland, and St. Boniface. There are several people on this list whose families are from the Osburg Parrish, so you may be able to find other connecting familes to yours, pretty easily. I've also found my family in the surrounding parrishes of Reinsfeld, Schillingen, Farschweiler, Zuesch and Irsch, along with others...... I currently have the Osburg andmicrofilm at my FHC. If you would tell me names and dates I would be happy to look for you. Just quickly looking in my files I found the following: Peter Feller of Osburg married to Anna Meyer of Thomm, child is Carolus Nicolaus Feller b. Oct. 12, 1899 Illinois. Anna Feller of Osburg married to Mathias Steinbach of Osburg, January 22, 1874 in Osburg child is Anna Steinbach b. May 10, 1876. Nicolas Michels married Margaretha Neufing March 11, 1882 in Osburg. Johannes Feller married Catharina Michels in Osburg, Anna Feller b. 1882 Osburg. I would be happy to send you all the names I currently have in my files. Karen Adams, Seattle

The part that became the province of Luxembourg, Belgium was split in Third Partition, 1839 in the First Treaty of London. French-speaking western part became Belgian province of Luxembourg. Belgium had made two attempts later on to try to annex the rest of Luxembourg but were thwarted by the 1867 Second Treaty of London recognizing independence of Luxembourg. From 1839 until 1867 the Prussians maintained a garrison for the Dutch King then. Belgium tried to claim Luxembourg in 1918-1919 at the peace conference of Versailles. Two American divisions occupied Grand Duchy in the meanwhile to guard Luxembourg's independence. W. David Samuelsen
