    2. Hi, Just wanted to let you know that www.Ancestry.com has posted 8/16 (free for ten days) the following: Steinfeld, Germany Deaths 1693-1793 Lying not far from the Rhine River in the western German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, the small town of Steinfeld is located near the larger city of Landau in der Pfalz. This centuries old town has been home to hundreds of thousands of people throughout its storied history. This database is a collection of death records, compiled mostly from Catholic church sources, for the town between 1683 and 1793. In addition to providing the name of the deceased and the date of their passing, burial information is provided for many and residence if from a neighboring town. Bibliography: Banet, Charles. 3. Hi, I am new to this list and would like to know if anyone can help me with the following names. I have an Abraham TAVERNIER BORN 1664 in Gronau,Palatinate, maried 19 May 1687 in Monderstadt, Hanau,RP and died Strasburg, Uckermark, Germany. His parents were Jean-Jaques TAVERNIER born 1637 St Armand France and Susanne Du Fresne born abt 1631 in Guines, Calais, France. Abraham maried Elisabeth TAVERNIER born 1665 Mannheim, Germany and died 7 Jun 1748 Strasbourg . Her father was Nicol (probably Nicolas) TAVERNIER born Alsheim, Palatinate. Abraham and Elisabeth had a son Abraham TAVERNIER, born 19 Oct 1697 in Strasburg Uckermark Germany, who married Jeanne TAVERNIER who was born in Rossow Uckermark Germany. her parents were Joses TAVERNIER born Alledemode france and marrried abt May 1690 in Hofgeismar to Sara SIMON who was born in Monderstaft, Pfalz, Germany . I would like to find out more on this line if possible. I believe many Tavernier lines stem from Nicholas TAVERNIER. I also have other Huguenot names attached to this fmaily including CASTILLON/CASTILLION, ROGE, JUNIER/JINIEZ, DOURDY, DUCHINNE (DUCAN) and BELEZE. Of these Marie DOURDY was born in Leiden, Holland abt 1671 abd Married Pierre ROGE. Marc CASTILLON was born 1665 in Lusson, Languedoc, France and married Peronne JUNIER/JINIEZ born abt 1667 Nion, Switzerland and married in Nion Switzerland on 24 Jul 1697. Anyone related to these people or who might know information on them I would appreciate hearing from. Kay Gassan Maryborough Queensland Australia

    1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] Name change
    2. Thanks to Jim K and Chuck I had heard of the practice of a husband taking the wife's surname when there were no male heirs. It is possible Bernhard was married before he came to the U.S. but I have no record of it nor any family stories. The apprentice possibility occurred to me. If my ancestor wrote Westphalia as place of origin, what would be the best large city to contact for information? Ann

    1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] Surname of Mostert
    2. I am looking for any information that anyone may have on the Surname "Mostert". The family left Luxembourg and settled in St. Paul Minnesota (Mid 1800's perhaps?). A James Peter Mostert died in St. Paul in approximately 1955. He owned a printing or book binding shop for many years. One daughter apparently married a fire chief from St. Paul. Two other daughters married and left to California and Oregon. Would like information about James Mostert, his spouse and any ancestors. Thank you, sent by Frank Lulich

    2. Ann, Children of that time would sent to be apprentices under the tutelage of a master. The master's name was the key to trade, therfore a name change would occurr. It could be that the apprentice reverted to his original name, not sure. Absent LDS, try contacting the largest municipality in the area. Generally, they are most cooperative and will send you in the best direction. Also, Many records have been destroyed with all the conflicts that have taken place. Good luck, JimK, Lux

    2. Dear Jim, Thanks for responding. I went to the LDS center to look for a birth record. The person there said I'd just have to hope that they have the record, but I didn't find anything using about three different spellings. I really don't know much about the practice of changing names. What were the reasons and were the young person's parents still alive? Thanks, Ann

    1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] Re: TRIER-ROOTS-D Digest V99 #246
    2. Ann, It was not unusual for a name change to occurr when a young person moved into another home. The origin goes back to fiefdom days of the 13th century. You probably know this, but contact your closest LDS center for more direction. Good Luck, JimK, Lux

    1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] Surname change
    2. Hello to everyone, Can anyone suggest anything? Can't go any farther because my ancestor changed his name from Kaltenbrach (or some spelling ) to Scheiperpeter. The family story is that he changed his name to that of the family living in the house he moved to. My theory is he apprenticed or something like that. He made horse collars. Bernhard Scheiperpeter b 1830 or 1840. Place of origin - Westphalia m 1862 in St. Louis. Cannot find him in any records except the Catholic Church where he was married and his children were baptized. Have tried Census, Passenger Lists and the FHC IGI. I know Westphalia is north of Trier but I'm trying anything even close. Thanks for any help. 1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] Church Records
    2. I have a question concerning surnames used in Church Records. I am researching Catholic records for Budesheim, a village 30 miles or so north of Trier, in the period 1800-1850. The date appears in the first column, the infants name in the second, and the parents and Godparents in the third. In most cases the infant's surname is listed as the same as the father's. But in some cases, the infant's surname is listed the same as the infant's mother; and in at least one case, the same as one of the Godparents. For example, I am interested in three brothers named Meyer. Each had at least one child, and in all cases, the surname listed for the child is the same as the maiden name of the associated mother (Schifer, Webers, and Cremer), instead of the father's (Meyer). Can anyone shed any light on this practice for me? Any help is much appreciated. Dick

    3. Is there anyone researching the Schwartz name? Looking for my grandfather's relatives. He had a sister and a cousin that lived in the Stevens Point, Wisconsin area. The cousin worked in a butcher shop in or near Stevens Point. The names of these two people are unknown. My grandfather Fredrick Schwartz was born 1871 in Rodershausen, Germany. He came to the United States in 1892 via the New York port. He then traveled to Stevens Point, Wisconsin, eventually moved to North Dakota, and then decided to homestead in Greenbush, Minnesota. Can anyone relate to this?
