    2. Hello to Mr. Samuelsen and other listers, I'd like to send a special THANKS to all who tried to help expecially those who solved my puzzle. The word in front of the box is the German word "Unbekannt" but immediately after the box is the word "Inconnu" which is French for unknown as in not known at this address. I am language disabled and missed the first word completely. Do I feel dumb!! Thanks to everyone for trying to help. Jan

    2. I wonder if the word could be scanned and sent to me as an image file. People often wrestle with German script and, at first thought, I wondered if it could have been the word "unbetannt", especially since it next to a check mark box. << > Werner, I finally sent a letter to 10 Germans with the same last name as my > ggrandmother (Grossbach) from the list you gave me... 6 of the 10 have been > returned with a box checked off that has the word inconnu next to it. 1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] Osweiler - Ecternacht
    2. 13 Sep 99 - hello - I'm a newcomer to the "list". Am researching Elizabeth Schiltz, born 1830 Ecternacht, Luxembourg and Peter S. Weyrens (Weirens) born 1829 Osweiler. They (my great-grands) married 12 Feb. 1856 in Osweiler - emigrated to Cold Spring, MN, 1867. Are there books telling the history of these two towns, or ways to access the birth records of those towns? thanks - Carol

    2. Dear Arlene, For what it's worth, a check of the Michelin map (#417, Mitte-West Deutschland) of central west Germany reveals an area called SINDFELD, located northwest of Kassell and due south of Paderborn, but this is a rather long way from Trier. Still, it's something to check out. Best wishes, Chanda Seibert Blitch North Carolina, USA

    1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] Re: REMICH,
    2. Marc Lecuit
    3. Phil, Remich is definitely a town and WINTRANGE is a village nearby, between Remich and another small town called Remerschen. As Remich and Remerschen, Wintrange is located on the Moselle river and the whole region is famous for its vineyards. If people say the come from Wintrange, Remich, they mean Wintrange, near Remich. I have no idea what this book is all about - just saw the link. If the authors state that the book is about Remich genealogy, Wintrange genealogy is likely to be excluded, but I suggest you contact the authors and ask them your question. 3. I looked at the information for the book Familienchronik Stadt Remich mentioned. What type of information is presented in this book. Is it just names or does it include dates of birth, death, marriage? I am confused about something. Is Remich a city/town or is it a county? My gg-grandparents Jacob Bernardy (born 1805) and Marguarite Senninger (born 1804) were from Wintrange, Remich, Luxembourg. Is Wintrange a village? Would they be included in this book? 3. Werner, My family is from the Echtnernacht region of Luxembourg with the exception of my great grandfather who came from Trier. (immigrated about 1870). His wife, my great grandmother had always said that she was from Sensfeld. We have never been able to locate such a town or village. I thought she might have meant Sinspelt which is near Bitburg but have searched the records there with no luck. Do you know of any town of village in your area that she might have been talking about. Thank you. arlene shoemaker

    3. Thought I'd give some more information on this book for anyone who might be able to purchase it for Joanne. I have received a copy from a elderly relative in Germany, but he had to go quite a distance to buy it for me. (And, has already gone twice now, because the US Postal Service lost the first copy for us!) >From the inside front cover of the book is: Kulturgeschichtlicher Verein Hochwald e.V. I would have to check on that. He does not have e-mail so it could be a while. It is a wonderful book. It is in German and has a few paragraphs about each of the towns listed and then lots of pictures of each town now and in the past. I just checked amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com and borders.com and none have it available. Maybe someone else knows of somewhere else to find it. Patty Gaddis (Lofi) wgaddis@mediaone.net With family from many of the small towns in the book. As a matter of fact, one of our Lofi houses is pictured in the book in Malborn, although it is not documented as such. There is another house behind the church built by my family c. 1865. We have just found out this information in the last few weeks. If there is anyone with knowledge of the town of Malborn that might be able to provide more info on the houses in town I would greatly appreciate it. 1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] Re: [PRUSSIA] Roman Catholic Prussians
    2. Keith Kurtz
    3. According to the information in "The Lutherans in North America" Three principal impulses contributed to the emigration of the Palatines. (note: although palatine was a region in Germany the English and American colonists often applied this name to all Germans). One was the end of a Century of recurring wars starting with the thirty year war and ending with the French plundering Southwestern Germany in 1707. Two was the severe winter of 1708-09 when the weather was so severe wine was said to have frozen in the cask. Three: The ruler determined the religion of his subjects. When a Roman Catholic became electorate the Lutherans started to become harassed and property was confiscated. I have to add that further down the page the book states that the persecution may have been exaggerated in order to gain sympathy from other Protestants. It states that there where many Roman Catholics in the migration. Another strong influence was the promise of William Penn for a better life in the New World. I am not Lutheran and am not here to discuss Religion except for how it influenced my ancestors decision to leave Germany. I have both Catholic and Lutheran German Ancestors and yes my Catholic ancestors came from the Saarland. I am sure that there are others like myself who are looking over all of Germany and any extra straw might get them over that wall that they have ran into.
