    3. Hello, There should be links for these soldiers on the internet in France. For now here is one for Luxembourg ancestors - Norbert HAMES site. http://norbert.hames.com/ link NAPOLEON Best regards, François http://webplaza.pt.lu/public/meischf/index.html --------------------------- From: <A HREF="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</A> Hello, Since we all have family that was probably involved in one way or another with this, did the French government keep records of the men's names who march to Moscow in 1812? Our part of the Rheinland/Rhineland was under French control at this time and undoubtedly, many of Napoleon's soldiers would have been drafted from this area as well as France. I am asking in behalf of my second cousin whose ancestor died after Napoleon's retreat and she is looking to obtain some kind of proof of this. Would appreciate to hear any thoughts on this matter. 2. I posted this to MN, IA, and B-W lists, but also applies to the Rheinland, Trier, and Lux list too.. Peter KIEFFER (b:1826 Luxemburg, Wurtenburg, Germany....immigrated 1852) and Elizabeth KALMAS (b: 1839 Wurtenberg, Germany) married on 15 April 1856 in Iowa (Dubuque area). They had Henry, Elizabeth (b:1858 married Henry HANSON), Mary (b:1861 married Mr. GEDELL), Evaline (b:1863), Carry (b:1863). They moved to Lake Crystal, Blue Earth, MN and had Annie (b:1865), Michael (b:1867), Minnie (b:1871), and Carrie/Cory (b:1873). Family notes had Peter and Elizabeth from Holland, 1880 MN Census had both from Wurtenberg, and obits (thanks Barbara) had P from Luxemburg, Germany (I think Lux, Germany is on the Lux/Germ border west of Rheinland) and E from Germany with father Jacob KALMAS. Does anyone have any more information they can add? Pete Hanson

    3. In addition to the deaths of young men who were forced to serve in Napoleon's army, there was an uprising in the Eifel. This uprising is one of the topics in the history section of www.eifeltour.de . The site is German only, if you do not speak German, run the site through a translator. The researcher has extracted data on Luxembourg soldiers in Napoleons Army from a book by Charles SCHAACK, called "The Luxembourgers Soldiers of France, 1792-1815". The page is in french, but select "C" for the searchable database. Items "D" and "E" provide explanations of codes/symbols used in the book. Use Alta Vista for needed translations. I was taught " kahn du dike Swetza or Swetsa?" for "Can you speak German?" When my kids took High School German I found out that was very different. "Papa ear (or maybe ee) fahts swine slockta ear koom sleek oon fear" is susposed to be "Daddy went to kill hogs and will be back at four" I'm not sure if I have separated words in the right place, they could be run together or broken in the wrong place. Just hearing it makes it hard to do on paper with English phonics. There is one line of the family who think they were from Hamburg, but from every thing I have learned that seems inpossible. When I asked why they thought that, I didn't get an answer. Possibly they sailed from there? Or there could be a town that sounds similar in the area I believe they were from, or it could have nothing to do with it. I have looked at a lot of maps on line, but can't seem to find one that I can see the rivers and the towns clearly, any sugestions. Thank you for being willing to try this. Kathy Kathy, If your family lived near a river in the Trier region and walked to Luxemburg, there are only three possible rivers: the upper Mosel (between Oberbillig and Perl), the Sauer river or the Our river. Maybe it`s possible to identify the exact region by the phrases you`ve learnt. Post it and I`ll try to determine. 1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] LATIN TRANSLATION
    2. Hi from Colorado, Is there anyone on the list that could help me translate a marriage record in Latin? I would be happy to scan it and send it on if there is someone who could help me. It seems to have a different format than others I have done and I can't make sense of it. Jane

    1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] difficult passage in marriage certificate
    2. anne unfried
    3. Hi, I am trying to find the birthplace of one of my ancestors, a Anna Maria Louise Friedrich. She was the daughter of Adam Friedrich, miller at the mill of Baesch (near Thalfang,) and Madelaine Marie Elz. In Anna's marriage certificate from 1809 the placename is written down, but I just can't make out what it is supposed to read. I would be very grateful if some of you who are good at reading Suetterlin could have a look at the document. I scanned the relevant passage and put a small and a bigger picture of it online at http://www.genealogie-neu.de/friedrich.html. The passage just says "neé à ...". Thanks a lot in advance - Anne Unfried ________________________________________________________________ Keine verlorenen Lotto-Quittungen, keine vergessenen Gewinne mehr! 1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] How to search
    2. René Huber
    3. I know that some of my ancestors emigrated from Zürich Kanton-Switz. to the Pfalz area sometime in the late 1600 or early in the 1700. In 1727 they emigrated from Pfalz to North America in the Ship Molly and settled in Lancaster Co.PA. I don't really know how/where to search for information about the years they spent in the Pfalz-Bayern area (I don't know the city or town). Probably some of the listers will be able to help me. Many thanks in advance, Rene
