    2. Werner Lichter
    3. Hello friends, on Saturday, June 22th there will be in the parish of Baustert near Bitburg (direction to Neuerburg) a parish festival at 7 p.m. I am invited to come there. They asced me to tell them in a report something about the emigration of this parish to USA ore somewhere else. The towns of this parish are Baustert, Berghausen, Brimingen, Feilsdorf, Hisel, Huetterscheid, Muelbach, Tempelhof and Neumuehle. Here´s my problem: My collection of emigrants from this parish is very small. I know about only one member from this list, Jim Ross. He has Wagner ancestors from Muelbach that went to Arcansas/USA, I hope this is correct Jim. Are there some other connections that will be of interst to tell the people of Baustert parish, perhaps emigrants, genealogical data. I would be glad to get some further information about emigrants from the parish of Baustert. back in the list with best wihes Werner LICHTER

    1. Fw: [TRIER-ROOTS-L] dialects--Att. Patricia
    2. glenn _kathy _rogers
    3. Pat Earlier I sent this to you directly, but I just got a failed delivery notice, so I am sending it to the list. Death records are good to look at. You never know what you will find. Have you also checked siblings, cousins, etc? Does your region have any biography books? Any court cases or probate records? The Proof of Heirship is a valuable document. I've checked siblings and some cousins, there are a LOt of them and I probably haven't seen them all as I don't know where all of them died. There are probate records, some guardianship records, no wills. There is a Goodspeed, but they lived in a tiny isolated German Catholic community and no one from there is in the book, I don't know if it was missed or no one wanted to participate. There will be a new book coming out this year from the Scott Co Historical Society, but I don't expect any thing new, as I have talked to any descendant I can find who has any interest or knowledge. Maybe I will be pleasantly surprised and someone will have found something since I talked to them. Land records? Yes, not help there either. When was the child in Germany born? Would he have had to register for the draft? I think he was probably too old, but maybe his son would have had to register for the WWI draft and his draft board card would probably ask where his parents were born? They were born in 1842 and 1845. As far as I can find did not participate in the Cival War and the eldest too old for WW1 and the youngest already dead. Marriage license for son born in Germany? No I haven't found where they were married. Not in the county where they first settled and not in the county where they died. The youger as far as I can find never married. Pat thanks, all good suggestions, keep them coming --I'm sure there is something I have missed somewhere. Kathy Pat ----- Original Message ----- From: glenn _kathy _rogers Sent: Friday, March 22, 2002 9:39 PM To: PATRICIA MEYERS Subject: Re: [TRIER-ROOTS-L] dialects--Att. Patricia I haven't found his obit. The old newpapers in this area were not well preserved. The area was probably Bav. at one time. I think from some other things I have learned that it is now Rheinland Pfalz area. (Of course I have been wrong a few times) : ) I have checked all the baptismal records I could find. I'm planning to get back to go over some death records I didn't know to look at before. Kathy ----- Original Message ----- From: PATRICIA MEYERS To: glenn _kathy _rogers Sent: Friday, March 22, 2002 7:06 PM Subject: Re: [TRIER-ROOTS-L] dialects--Att. Patricia What about an obituary for the child that was born in Germany? I would think Bavaria would be where they were from, since that was mentioned on a census. Have you checked baptismal records for possible relatives? I don't know if you have to be naturalized to vote. I know that for some of my German relatives, on a voter's list, when asked when they were naturalized, it said they were naturalized by an Act of Congress. Never was able to find out what or why. If I find out anything about the earliest books on Germans to America I will let you know. Pat Meyers ----- Original Message ----- From: glenn _kathy _rogers Sent: Friday, March 22, 2002 6:37 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Fw: [TRIER-ROOTS-L] dialects--Att. Patricia Patricia, Thanks so much, I'll try to answer each part of your reply. Have you tried a death record for the child who was born in Germany? Yes, all it says is Germany. Do any of the census records indicate that any family member was naturalized? Where did they settle? One census record says he was eligable to vote, so that should mean he was naturalized, but that could be an error. They were in Stark Co OH. first until 1852/53 then moved to Scott Co Mo. shich is where I live (again). I grew up here. So the church and courthouse records are handy. Part of the census records give Germany as POB and some Bavaria. Did you try the books Germans to America? I don't know what years these volumes cover but someone on the list might be able to do a lookup for you if your local library doesn't have these books. If there is a vol. for those yrs. I haven't seen it. Let me know if any of these suggestions are helpful...and let me know if I can suggest anything further if you have already checked these things before. Did you try geneanet.com for your family name? I found a relative there. It gives you some indication of people tracing the same surname. Yes there is one other person with the info, but she got it from me. (smile) There is also a German version but I never understood it...it's in German but someone found the name of a person for me who is researching the same family and I have written him and gotten five pages of information! I haven't tried this--Iwill. All good ideas--thanks. So good luck and let me know if I can help... Pat Meyers DeKalb, IL ----- Original Message ----- From: glenn _kathy _rogers Sent: Thursday, March 14, 2002 2:43 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [TRIER-ROOTS-L] dialects Thanks to Ernst and Anne The information was very helpful. I haven't been able to pinpoint the town of origin for my MENZ ancestors. But another helpful person on this list or Pfalz was able to help me from a couple phrases I had been taught. He had said it was a dialect that was spoken along the Mosell R. but didn't give it a name. My ggrandfather had told his children and grandchildren stories of living very near a river (they couldn't recall which river) and of walking to Luxembourg. I know family stories are often unreliable but this one seems to be checking out. The phone books of the area have too many Menzs to try that route unless I can't get more information another way. I have been unable to find naturalization or ships records for them. Catholic church death and marriage records don't place of birth. They would have immigrated 1846-48, there was a son born in Ger. in 1845 and he remarried in Ohio 11 Jan 1848, after his 1st wife died on board ship ( her death is also family lore). Born in Ger. were: Martin MENZ b. 9 Jan 1817 Taddeus MENZ b. 10 Apr 1842 Linus MENZ b. 23 Feb 1845 They were Catholic. Any help or suggestion about what else to try will be appreciated. And if someone else would like to try to determine which dialect exactly it was let me know. I have to try to type it phoneticly but it seems to work before. Sorry this got so long. 2. I apologize to all on this wonderful list. I normally do not respond to this sort of "stuff" but this time I cannot resist. IF there was No advertising on the internet (I dislike it as much as anyone-- and 99.9 % of the time I delete it) BUT if there is no advertising I shudder to think what the price of AOL and other servers would be. Advertising on the internet is like the ads on Television, radio and newspapers ... it pays the bills. Thanks for listening ... I will step down from the soap box. 3. I suspect that you will see a bit of the clutter at the end of this email.... I have no control of it.... It is placed there after the mail leaves my mail box and goes through my msn mail handler. I suspect the same is true of the others that you cite.... Do you think for one minute that we would want to have advertising material on our emails..... or that I would actually put take the time to type it in my signature area.... One census record says he was eligible to vote, so that should mean he was naturalized, but that could be an error." Comment: Some folks might be misled by the above. Citizenship was historically not a universal requirement for voting. So that fact that a male of a certain time and place voted does not imply that he was naturalized a citizen. Unfortunately my history doesn't go beyond this factoid.

I recently read the chronicles and the history of Dahlenburg. They had a historian and genealogist do some reasearch of the Lunenburg area. There is a book of that research out. I got the translation from google on their website and it was telling of the trek of the the soldiers passing through. Evidently, French stayed there for three years. I wonder what happens when they stay for three years. At one time soldiers kept their horses in their church.! Now, also I wanted to say that their is a famous battle at the Göhrde in 1813. One can find maps of this battle down to time frames by going to Göhrde at google. They have a local museum given over to this history of the battle. I wonder what names of soldiers can be found there? They have figurine replicas on display in battle. so I would say lots of information must have gone into this. 3. Hello, Don`t know, if this of interest for you: I heard, that there is a memorial for the people of Trier, who fought under Napoleon. It is situated on Triers main cemetery. It was erected in 1842 by veterans.
