    1. [TRIER-ROOTS-L] 9 year span between children???
    2. Susan Nokes
    3. Could anyone on this list shed light on this 9 year span without children in a marriage??? Two daughters were born to George MICHELS and Anna Marie THELEN...Elizabeth was born February 04, 1834 and her sister Anna was born in 1843....both daughters were born in "Prussia". Eva MICHELS was the first child of George MICHELS and Anna Marie THELEN to be born in America. She was born September 09, 1847 in Thiensville, Ozaukee Co., Wisconsin. This means the MICHELS' emmigration must have taken place between the birth of Anna in 1843 and the birth of Eva in 1847. The emmigration of George MICHELS and his wife Anna Marie would have taken place between the birth of their daughter, Anna in 1843, and the birth of their daughter Eva in 1847. George and Anna Marie likely emmigrated with two children: Elizabeth and Anna. (I don't know if they had any other children who may have stayed in Germany/Prussia). George MICHELS would have been aged 35 in 1843 and 39 in 1847 Anna Marie, wife of George, would have been aged 18 in 1843 and 22 in 1847 Elizabeth, their daughter, would have been aged 9 in 1843 and 13 in 1847 Anna, their daughter, would have been an infant in 1843 and aged 4 in 1847. Would the Prussian government have prevented parents from taking any male children--and this might explain for the 9 year span between Elizabeth born in 1834 and her sister born in 1843? It is said that they emmigrated from the TRIER area.... Thank you, Susan

It's possible others were born to them, but died. Infant and child death was very common in those days.

    3. You have ME confused... Does it not state that: Anna Marie, wife of George, would have been aged 18 in 1843 and 22 in 1847 Earlier it states: Elizabeth was born February 04, 1834 For both of these statements to be true, the mother Anna Marie was approximately age 9 Or am I just imagining it this evening, or missing something important? ----- Original Message --Elizabeth was born February 04, 1834 --- From: Susan Nokes To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, May 22, 2002 7:48 AM Subject: [TRIER-ROOTS-L] 9 year span between children??? 3. Ernest, Thank you for the idea! I started looking up St. Martin of Tours..and here is what I came up with: (I wish I could read German!) For those who are unable to read German (like myself), I found an interesting article at: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/09732b.htm A more in depth article with beautiful pictures: http://users.erols.com/saintpat/ss/1111.htm And actually quite a few more! Does anyone know what the letters O. S. B. would stand for when following the name oa a priest? Seem to me it might have something to do with the Benedectine order--but I'm not certain. Thank you, Susan

    3. Hello, Martin of Tours (born around 316 in Hungary, died 8. Nov. 397 in Candes/France) is a very popular saint in Germany and especially in the diocese Trier, where abt. 70 parishes are named after St. Martin (until 1803 there was a famous Benedictine Abbey with the name St. Martin in Trier, it is believed that it was founded by Martin itself ). Martin visited Trier the first time in 370, after his election as bishop. In 385 a.c. he visited the roman emperor Magnus Maximus in Trier to defend the heretic Priscillianus who had been sentenced to death. For further information about this remarkable saint, look at: http://www.bistum-trier.de/kiosk/martin/index.htm (german only) Ernst Mettlach Trier/Germany ----- Original Message ----- From: Susan Nokes <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, May 18, 2002 2:57 AM Subject: [TRIER-ROOTS-L] St. Martin's--Mertesdorf, St. Martin's Granville, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin > Hi, > > I read the following on the TRIER rootsweb list: > > "The name of the catholic church in Mertesdorf is St. Martin (the name of > Mertesdorf itself goes back to the name of St. Martin)." > > Does anyone know if the German's who built the frame church in 1847-48 and a > frame school in 1848 might have come from Mertesdorf? > > St. Martin's Catholic Church is located in what was West Granville, > Milwaukee County, Wisconsin...I think it is at 8900 West Appleton Avenue. > > I am wondering if, out of love for their homeland and their homeland church, > if they might have named St. Martin's after their church in Mertesdorf? > > Just a thought--any other thoughts on this? > > Thank you, > Susan > [email protected] > > > ==== TRIER-ROOTS Mailing List ==== > Going on vacation longer than 4 days? 3. From: "Juliana Smith" Date: 18 May 2002 10:10:26 -0600 I am currently attending the NGS Conference in Milwaukee and we have received word that California is moving forward quickly in its move to close access to the index of birth and death records and will be meeting Monday morning at 9:30 am for a hearing on the bill. I am copying a message below with details of the legislation and contact information for California legislators form the Appropriation Committee. Please let our voices be heard on this issue. If closed, it will set a precedent and it is likely that other states will follow suit. It is particularly important that California voters voice their opinions. Please pass this important message on to other lists as well. As of late last night there was no change. This morning I find that the bill has been scheduled to be heard before the Appropriations Committee at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 20, 2002. There are also new amendments. The bill requires the comprehensive index of birth and death record indexes be kept confidential. It will be available to some government agencies, but the information is require to maintain confidentiality. The copies of Indexes sold prior to 31 December to 3rd parties will require that the information remain confidential under penalty of law. It requires the State Registrar to establish a separate noncomprehensive electronic indices which will be electronically available to county recorders. But the public may only view these noncomprehensive indexes at the State or county on computer terminals designated for this purpose. Obviously, between now and 9:30 a.m. on Monday morning leaves little time for action. 3. Hi, I read the following on the TRIER rootsweb list: "The name of the catholic church in Mertesdorf is St. Martin (the name of Mertesdorf itself goes back to the name of St. Martin)." Does anyone know if the German's who built the frame church in 1847-48 and a frame school in 1848 might have come from Mertesdorf? St. Martin's Catholic Church is located in what was West Granville, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin...I think it is at 8900 West Appleton Avenue. I am wondering if, out of love for their homeland and their homeland church, if they might have named St. Martin's after their church in Mertesdorf? Just a thought--any other thoughts on this? My ggggrandfather married Elizabeth GLESIUS in or around the Trier area Abt. 1834. Her parents were: Bartholomew Glesius and Katherine (I don't know her maiden name). She was born October 28, 1814 in or around the Trier area. She married Christian Lenger (born January 10, 1810-also born in the Trier area). His parents were C.
