THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE ASKED FOR ANYTHING BUT COULD SOMEONE TELL ME ABOUT THE HISTORY OF ELLER-EDIGER, RHINELAND, PRUSSIA? I AM RESEARCHING JOHN HOLZKNECHT AND MARGARET WOLF. THANK YOU . DORIS.
Hello Carolyn, in my database, you find a short history about that places. You find the database at: http://www.rolf.sytes.net:8011/myphp/index.php just enter büdingen or b_dingen (if you have problems to find the umlaut) in the "ort" field and press the ok-Button, to get all the information about the places which have a b followed by one any character (hope this is right in english) and dingen at any position. i.e. Büdingen, Bidingen, Badingen, Bödingen, Altenbödingen and soon. For the next step I will append the history of places from the Trier and the Simmern area Beste Grüße Rolf (Freytag) mailto:[email protected] http://www.rolf-freytag.de

Amy, I completely forgot to say that the villages you mention are indeed in Saarland (although it's going to be very difficult to find them as such on an acutal map0. Hi, I have enjoyed reading the e-mails for this list for some time but have not been brave enough to join in. Since the Orscholz history has been a topic, can anyone provide a history for the villages of Schwemlingen and Budingen? I apologize for not knowing how to make the umlaut. Schwemlingen (surnames DILLINGER, DULLINGER [U with an umlaut] KAAS,THIRY,TIRI,TIRY,TIRRY,TYRE) Budingen [U with an umlaut] (surnames JOHANNES, OLLIGER, OLINGER, OLLINGER) Carolyn
Hi Amy, Are you sure about your directions? Because 35 km south of Trier you're in the area of Britten in Saarland... For Saarland it has for most of its history belonged to the same entity than Lorraine, France (the duchy of Lorraine for a long time) and during the French Revolution it joined France. I never heard that this area could have belonged to Luxemburg. Anyway Luxemburg has been a county and then a duchy belonging to the German Empire and then to the Netherlands from 1443 (themselves under austrian, spanish and again austrian domination). In 1656 France had obtained the south of the duchy and took it all under the Revolution. In 1815 Luxemburg is detached from the Netherlands and receives the titel of great-duchy. It is given personally to Guillaume 1st of the Netherlands. When Belgium and the Netherlands are separated in 1831, Luxemburg is supposed to be divided amongst those two countries, but a new treaty in 1839 gives officially birth to the great-duchy as entity of itw own even if it's independance is admitted and guaranteed only in 1867. Here is the English translation of the History of Orscholz: Note: This came from my German speaking cousin; then translated by Barbara in France into English; then I've made changes in English. History of Orscholz: ...Here is still further extracts/exerpts from the diocese archives of the Archbishopric. ...According to the report of the Bishopric Chronicle of Trier (Gesta Treverorum), King Ludwig IV (died 911); gave/donated to the Archbishop of Trier, Radbod, the castles Sierck and Orkesvels with the villages pertaining to them. ...Sierck today is in France and is situated about 8 km from Borg. Orkesvels is today called Orscholz, is situated in Germany about 6 km from Borg. The castle of Sierck must have been an imposing and vast building. The ruins are still there and can visited. There is more left from castle of Orkesvels. ...A man named Arnold de Orkesvels appears in 1167 in a document of the Archbishop of Trier, Hillin. The Chapel of Orscholz, named in 1569 as a subsidiary/branch chapel of Tunsdorf, was situated on the path up to the castle and was occupied by a priest in 1341. This condition/state of things is still mentioned/testified by the Visitaion report of 1743 with the mention of a Vicar residing in Orscholz. The inhabitants of the village were only obligated at the highest holidays/ and celebrations to attend the parish church (in Tunsdorf). They also received there the Easter Communion. The chapel in Orscholz had a clear precedence over the other subsidiary chapels of the parish, who had no right to services. This precedence/priority is related/connected to the castle. ...With the new organization of the parishes in French times (1803), Orscholz became an independent parish without subsidiaries. ...The today's church is under the patronage of Nikolaus. The priest of Orscholz also serves the Parish of St. Gangolf in Oberleuken. Alice aellis wrote: > > Here is the e-mail I received from my new German cousin about the > History of Orscholz. Borg to Oberleuken is 2 km. Borg to Eft Hellendorf is about 3-4 km. Borg to Orkesvels/Orscholz is about 6 km. Borg to Saarburg about 17 km. Borg to Sierck, France is about 8 km. Here the second translation. Barbara History of Orscholz Herewith other extracts from the archives of the archbishopric. According to the report of the bishopric chronicle of Trier (Gesta Treverorum), king Ludwig the IVth (died 911) donated to the archbishop of Trier, Radbod, the castles Sierck and Orkesvels with the villages pertaining to them. I came a reference to a book entitled, "Book of New World Immigrants, Vol.2, compiled by Teppler, "Pioneers From Standernheim" by Hugo Foelich from the Lutheren Church Register of the village of Standernheim (in the Nahe valley near Bad Kreuznach in the northern Palatinate of Germany). I wonder if anyone knows about this book, and if so, if they could look up the following individuals: Nicholas Henry Hill, b. 12/30/1883 Elizabeth Hill or Elizabeth Groelich or Gruelock b. abt 1842. Both immigrated to the US in 1892. Thanks very much. Richard Cross

Sorry but it seems I was given the wrong information. Now I have just read the news from Saarland and they say the Tour is supposed to arrive on the Schengener bridge between Saarland and Luxemburg tomorrow at around 13h45, go through Perl and arrive at around 14h30 in St. Wendel and finally at around 17h00 in Saarbrücken. I am enjoying these short village histories. While my ancestors came from the Orscholz, Borg, Mettlach area, these histories give me a feel for the regional ambiance. Mike Fox San Antonio, Texas
Just a note of possible interest: ...I had received a note from my cousin in Borg, Germany. She stated the Tour de France will be going through Saarland. She mentioned the 7th of July. However, because of our language differences, I donot know if the Tour de France starts July 7th or is going through Saarland on July 7th. She said Armstrong is predicted to win. ...Here is the English version of the History of Rettel. Rettel is located on the French border with Germany near Luxembourg. Source: I received the German version from my new German cousin; in turn Barbara, who lives in France translated it to English and she has asked me to put my English version on the list for those interested. My cousin gave me permission to share and post this imformation. ...I am not sure if there is much interest on the list of the history of these villages because I have not received any response other than those who so kindly helped has helped me with the translations and the discussions on Trier-Roots Web. ...The English Translation from my cousin (from Borg) who lives in this area of Germany: ...To obtain precise information on the history of our area, it is useful to go to the webpage of Trier. I had already given the address but it was probably not correct. The address is: http://www.trier.de The page is also available in English. For example, under A - Z is the (Chronik der Stadt) Chronicle of the City. To obtain dates on the Christendom, the page http://www.bistum-trier.de is very interesting. The events of the Archbishopric Trier are closely related to the history of Borg. Metz has also has had some responsibility for our area. I think this is not extraordinary since Rettel is only about 10 km from Borg. In our present time, people also sometimes marry in the neighboring France. ...Extracts from the book of the Bishopric Trier archives; "Siedlung und Pfarrorganisation im alten Erzbistum" (Settlement and parish organization in the old Archbishopric Trier). ...The church, St. Laurentius and the Abby of St. Sixtus in Rettel: ...The beginning of the monastery is clad in obscurity. According to the saying, the founder of Rettel was Effetia, who is supposed to have been either a sister of Carl the Great, the historic search knows nothing; or who could also have been a sister of Hildegard, the second spouse of Carl the Great. The monastery, a woman's monastery at its origins, is supposed to have been consecrated in honor of Pope Sixtus by Pope Leo III, who was in Germany in 799 and 804. There is no doubt about the Carolingian foundation/establishment of the monastery with the archeological searches/excavations which have found three important/distinguished persons in persons in Traperzsarcophages (1605/1616, 1655) in the Stephanuskapelle (Stephan Chapel). ...The gentlemen/sires of the near Burg Sierck, probably as loan from the Dukes of Lorraine, had residence over Rettel in 1193. The abbey seems to have been destroyed at the beginning of the 15th century. On intervention of Margaretha, the wife of Duke Karl II of Lorraine, the abbey was given in 1431 to the Carthusian monks. ...The monastery building was transferred 1467to the Dechanten/dekant of the country chapter of Perl which should form a Klerikergemeinschaft/cleric's society with 5 ecclesiastics/clergymen. ...The Visitation/Inspection Report from 1743 offers following details for the parish of Rettel: ...The Carthusian Order was, in reason of its exclusive right on the territory, responsible for the choir and nave of the church. The Prior of the Carthusians, a vicar who lived in the Carthisian building, had the patronage right and command, to take care of the souls. ...During the re-organization of the church in French times (1802), Rettel stayed as a parish (succursale) of the canton Parish of Sierck. ...Rettel is a true Lorraine village. It is situated right on the Mosel. I hope you enjoy receiving this history as much as I have. I have ancestors from the villages of Wolsfeld, Trimport, Herforst: the Bangart and Hartmann families. I wish to obtain photographs of the parish churches if these buildings were built before 1850 and are still being used. I am also interested in other views of these villages. I have not found any websites that have photos of these places. I am willing to contract with someone to have pictures taken. Duane E. Hello, I've changed my database for places in Germany. I've splitted the field "Literatur" to "Literatur" and "Archive" (literature, archives), also I append a field for "Geschichte" (history). I've filled this field with data for "Kreis Merzig-Wadern" and "Kreis St. Wendel". (short history about a few lines for each place) The database also include the following fields Ort PLZ Gemeinde Kreis Regierungsbezirk Bundesland Breite Laenge place zip municipality district government area?? state latitude longitude You can search thru all fields for example to find Mettlach insert mettlach at the ort(place) field. If you insert search data into two fields it will be searched for field1 AND field2. Often you can find more than one entry for the same place, but with different data for literature, archives and history. you find the database at: http://www.rolf.sytes.net:8011/myphp/index.php Ofcourse it is possible for you to change the entries, for example if you want to add data to literature, archives and/or history. If you enter history data (you can enter english text) append it to the text in the field and don't forget also to append the source, where you found the history. I hope you enjoy the database. let me know, if you have any problems. Herzlichst, Andreas West English version: Hello everybody, I just wanted you to inform, that I changed the structure of my homepage and published at the URL: www.awest.de/Privat/Ahnenforschung/Index.html information about my ancestor research and my results (actual 5700+ persons). If you bookmarked my address please update it with the new entry point. Comments and ideas are gladly welcomed, I have also published a step-by-step guide for the Dynamic Famil y Tree which I use for publishing my data. I have also a list of my top ancestors (which means all dead-ends of my research, where the parents are unknown), an about 2 MB big location list with all names (about 140 pages), a list of names and an index of all surnames in the database. I'd like to point out too, that I'm trying to collect all persons with the surname WEST and it's variations (like WESTIN, DE WEST, TE WEST) that once lived in Germany. If you have any information regarding persons with these surnames which are currently not in my database, it'd be glad to receive them. So far I have added data from the Ancestral File and the IGI of the Mormons, persons who died in the act of WWI and WWII, as well as some emigrants from Germany which I found by chance. The website will be constantly updated so please bookmark and come back.
