Hi List! Is there anyone out there who could do a look up for me in Gonner's Luxemburger Gazzette? There is some information on John Hiber located in the Luxemburger Gazette, October 22, 1901, page 5. I will gladly accept the information either in German or an English translation. Thank you in advance. Sincerely, Mary Hiber
Can someone please help me locate the book "Einwohner von Düppenweiler von 1820" by W. Verburg, Leverkusen, 1986? I've searched the net, but did not find a source. Thanks for your help. Evelyn Pecht Iowa
Michael, Thank you, you always come up with interesting information. This may help to explain why on a Naturalized Citizenship why Michael Biever said he was born in Luxembourg Germany in 1864, if he was from around the Borg area. Am I to understand that area was once called Luxembourg? How long was it called Luxembourg Germany? He also mentioned the Emperor of Germany. Others who left from Orscholz in the 1870's, referred to the King of Prussia. A John Biever in 1888 on his Naturalization Paper, renounces all allegiance and fidelelity to every foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty whatsoever, and more particularly to The King of Holland whereof he was a subject. Which brings a question, Holland? Now, that surprised me and I have no answers! Dear List, I found an interesting book which chronicles the history of Saarburg and the surrounding area. The book is called "Geschichte der Burg und Stadt Saarburg" by D. R. Ritzler. The date of publication is 1912. One chapter examines the Saarburg region under the feudal legal system. The chapter lists those institutions which held jurisdiction over many of the villages in the area. I do not think that the listing below is complete, but it is very helpful. The Foundation of St. Paulin (Stift St. Paulin) held the right to high, middle and lower court jurisdiction in Greimerath and Upper (Ober) and Lower (Nieder) Zerf. (Note: I believe that the Stift St. Paulin also held rights to one or more courts in the "kurtrierisch" part of Oberleuken). The Trier Cathedral Chapter (Domkapitel) held sovereignty over all of Perl; held middle court jurisdiction in Ayl and Biebelhausen; and held basic/lower court jurisdiction in Ayl, Bilzingen, Faha, Kesslingen, Oberleuken, Saarburg, Oberperl and Sehndorf. The Abbey of St. Matthias (Abtei St. Matthias) held high court jurisdiction in Baldringen, Hentern, Lampaden, Schömerich; and held basic court jurisdiction in Nennig, Wies, Berg, Butzdorf, Kahren, Dilmar, Esingen, Helfant, Soest, Rommelfangen, Sinz and Tettingen. The Abbey of St. Irminen (Abtei St. Irminen) held basic court jurisdiction in Schoden. The Abbey of St. Martin (Abtei St. Martin) held middle court jurisdiction in Ockfen. The Principality (under a count) of Luxemburg (Grafschaft Luxemburg) exercised all 3 court jurisdictions over Besch, Borg, Dittlingen, Fellerich, Fisch, Kanzem, Köllig, Körrig, Kreuzweiler, Nennig in part, Nittel, Onsdorf, Rehlingen, Tawern, Temmels, Wehr, Wellen, Wiltingen, Wies in part, Wincheringen and Wochern. (As an aside, I believe someone on this list had previously asked whether one or more of these villages belonged to Luxembourg at one time.) The Principality (under a count) of Lorraine/Lotharingia (Grafschaft Lothringen) exercised all 3 court jurisdictions over Beuren in part, Büschdorf, Eft, Hellendorf, Kirf in part, Nohn, Oberleuken in part, Orscholz, Tünsdorf, Weiten, Wehingen and Bethingen. The "Burggrafschaft" Freudenburg (best I can translate: the principality under a count extending around a castle in Freudenburg) held jurisdiction over Kastel, Freudenburg and Hamm. The rights to the Burggrafschaft exchanged hands several times, but were eventually purchased by the Abbey of St. Maximin. (By way of background: The castle in Freudenburg was built in the 1300s by the counts of Luxemburg, namely by John, Count of Luxemburg, King of Bohemia (the "Blind King"), who was an interesting guy.) The Cloister of Taben (Probstei Taben) held jurisdiction in Taben and Rodt.

Barbara, you understood me correctly. I don`t think this could explain the case of Maxine`s Grandfather. To be the Metropolit of a province is more a symbolic thing and a honorary title for clerics. Most normal catholics don´t know who or what a Metropolit is. I really have no idea what "Cologne Trier" means. Ernst, Thanks for the information. If I understand correctly before 1803 Cologne, even if it was not part of the archbishopric of Trier, was under some authority from Trier according to the hierarchy and since then it's exactly in the other way? You think this could explain the inscription of "Cologne, Trier" on the mariage certificate of Maxine's Grandfather? Since the mariage was in 1831, it should then be the other way around, no? Barbara, Cologne was never part of the (arch)bishopric of Trier. Since roman times, it is an own diocese (the first bishop was Maternus in 313/14). Until 1803, the archbishop of Trier was the so called "Metropolit" for all dioceses in the region called "Rheinische Kirchenprovinz" (this means, he was higher in clerical hierarchy) After 1803, this changed. Trier was no longer an archbishopric and the archbishop of Cologne is the Metropolit now. E.g., if Trier gets a new bishop, it`s the job of the archbishop of Cologne to lead this ceremony. Hi, The only explanation I have is that Trier is not only a city but also an archbishopric (a very old one with that). As archbishopric the territory administered from Trier is a lot greater and could thus include Cologne. I'm not absolutely sure and would have to verify but I think Cologne is still in the archbishopric of Trier nowadays. Barbara ----- Message d'origine ----- De : "Joseph J & Maxine M. Hello List, I have a certificate for a great grandparent's marriage. It states his place of birth as Cologne Trier, Germany I see Cologne and I see Trier on the map. They are rather close, but don't seem to be connected in any way. The date of the document is about 1831. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks for any help. Pray for Peace, Maxine Capezza
I have been trying to find the birthplace of my Great Grandfather. In the family bible he has written (in poor handwriting and old German which I have had translated) Lerueck, Drais Dirnn Township, County Trieso, Prussia. I have looked at old maps of Prussia, maps of Germany and Luxembourg etc. and cannot find anything that comes close. Any help???? Lorelee Mogg
This email came from my NYGenese list, but thought someone on this list might recognize the name or location. I recently purchased an old frame at the Goodwill in Batavia, NY. Inside the frame, was a photo of a family which appears to be from the mid to late 1800's. It is a photo of an elderly woman and 5 children - 2 boys and 3 girls. Unfortunately, there is no name on the photo...only the following is written on the bottom of the mat - Carl Weiss, Frankfurt aM Bleichstrasse 28 am Petersthor If any of you are interested, I'd be happy to e-mail you a scan of this photo. It's obvious it meant a lot to someone. The weathered condition of the frame shows me that it hung on the wall for many years. I'd love to be able to reunite this photo with family. Here is some information I received which may be of interest, hope I have translated it OK, from Alta Vista Translation: This is in relation to my inquire about immigration from Borg in the 1870's. From a book over the History of Merzig Wadem, this is the area Borg belongs today. An entry. "In order to create a better supply connection to the areas won in the French-German War of 1870/71 with the fortress towns Metz and Diedenhofen (today Thionville), the Moselstrecke from Trier-Ehrang takes up the enterprise to Diedenhofen on 15 May 1878. Thus Nenning and Perl become on the opening day railway stations." Borg is only 48 km from Trier. Their ancestors probably traveled by horse or ox cart from Mettlach to Trier and from there to Bremen, Hamburg or however to Antwerp. "Because I read that the main route was already taken of Saarbruecken, over Merzig, Mettlach after Trier on 26 May 1860 in enterprise(in Betrieb genommen wurde)". Following is my attempt to translate the passage, 1846 Johann Schroeder emigration: A booklet from Perl reported on the emigrations from the office of the District Perl. Letters of emigrants of 1846 are there printed. They describe the itinerary and the first time in America. A letter is particularly detailed and originates from a Johann Schroeder from Milwaukee, Territory of Wisconsin. Also here is an exerpt. "We drove off on 21.5 of Antwerp and drove to against Vlissingen. There was anchored and a stay was made. From here no more could not be anchored because of the depth of the water. You dear God, which for a tremendous water! Here one does not see other one than skies and water and it seems as if the whole world water would be. On 30 May we had a very beautiful day there to have we a shark fish imprisoned, and I had very much fun. But my fun stopped soon. Of 1.4 June was storm. The ship caught on to vary, the crates had to be lashed, the pots rolled from a corner into the other one. The bed places fell together, one could any longer go, no longer. The tremendous wassermassen threatened to devour us. Then we all became ill. That lasted however only up to 14. Then we became again all lively. To your brother Josef nothing was missing. It had us on lake offer and cook. On 1 July (thus 40 days sea voyage) we saw first country of America. The joy, which I had at that time, I cannot describe you. Against 9 o'clock came a ship to fetche us, and at 12 o'clock were we in New York. When I came from the ship and wanted over country to go, there I, which earth would have itself always moved meant I meant America would have swung. (This must be a very poor translation of the last sentence!!) We are now in New York, in a large and beautiful city, in which more trade is, as in completely Prussia. On 21. we drove off with the steamship of New York. On 3. we came to Albany. There we came on the railway and drove on 4. to Buffalo. There we quiet-lay one day. On 6. we are from there again with the steamboat driven off over Lake Erie and over Lake Michigan until Milwaukee. On 10. we arrived in Milwaukee. Now we had achieved our goal. We went equal to our compatriots. Johann Schroeder continues to report, how he had again met all acquaintance. One accepted the newcomers friendly and helped them so well it continued. In addition, homesickness seized obviously so some new American. In its letter Johann Schroeder writes as it country to finally buy can, like it around the grain stands (everything is much better as in Germany) even the oxen in America ran allegedly faster than the horses in Germany. As Johann, many emigrants wrote so some man with the entire family their relatives in Germany, and caused to emigrate. Sorry, about the poor English grammer and translation. To the list. I received a German e-mail, within it, it mentioned about Johann Schroeder's emigration in 1846. I thought maybe this might be of interest to you. Hopefully I will not make mistakes, when typing it. Alice

Joan, That might be a bit pricey..... There a quite a few maps online, free you can copy/print etc.. Check out Don Watson's Hesse site, this is their map page. There is more than just Hesse info, you can spend days going through his site. http://members.cox.net/hessen/resources.htm#Maps Also the FEEFHS site, map room: http://feefhs.org/maps/indexmap.html The German Genealogy site has quite a bit of maps & information http://www.genealogienetz.de/genealogy.html Good luck! I received an answer from a person at the webpage for the reproduction of an old Trier region map. the problem is that I am in the USA. The suggested method of purchase was through a bank in the region. The map cost is $15, shipping is $13. The cost to do a wire transfer is $41. Does anyone have a suggested method of doing this without this large wire transfer fee? Thank you, Joan
