Hi Jane, This "naming system" may have been true sometimes, but I wouldn't take it always as granted. I have found a lot of people during my search who had two names on their birthcertificate but were called by one or the other or both together afterwards. I have not notice a system in this. Hi Jane, Go to http://www.kerchner.com/germname.htm for an explanation of German naming customs. Leon
Not long ago I came across a website on the naming system for Germans. It said when there are two names the first is a saint's name, but the second name was the one the person went by. I am researching church records from the 1700s in the Waxweiler and Pallien parishes. Does anyone know whether this system would have applied during that time period? Could that mean Anna Catherina might go by that name as well as just Catherina when she is named as a parent in her children's baptism records? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me, Jane researching Bertel/Berthel, Coumont, Roth, Laub, Lebot, Thiel, Thilen/Thelen
Hi Jane I'd like to know what the URL is for that "Naming System" website Thanks in advance Beverly Mack Zanon -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, September 05, 2002 3:32 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [TRIER-ROOTS-L] Naming system Not long ago I came across a website on the naming system for Germans. Maxine, Are you sure the name isn't HENN? I've seen my HENN ancestors enumerated as HEHN, HENN, HOEHN, HOEHNIN. Nancy > Thanks for all of the input from Eugene Gillen, Barbara > Schnubel , Ernst > Mettlach, and others. > Is Hoehnen a common name?

Is anyone researching the STREIT family lines? I have some information --but not much, and not known to be documented-- on a Joannes Streit oo Anna Dahm supposedly 1875 in Schleidweiler and one of their children --Henry Sr.-- born in Welschbillig 1850. At least the son emigrated and settled in Tipton Kansas. Thomas Kohn
I am trying to find information on Peter Mitchell/Michel born January 31, 1859 to Joseph. Peter had a sister Mary/Maria- (I found a picture of my grandmother's that says "Dad's sister - Mary Wangerin" - picture was taken in Milwaukee.) He settled in Raymond, Racine County, WI. I believe he was from the Trier area only because so many of his neighbors were. Lore has it that there was a breach among the Michels in the Raymond area...some remained Catholic, others became Methodist. He was a member of the Methodist Church. USA records have yielded no further clues than "Germany".
Hello, I am a newcomer to the TrierRoots mailing list but I have already gotten some very good information from the archives and from the messages I've received. I'm not sure if anyone can help me with this but decided to ask. I am trying to find information about the daily lives of my ancestors who were from Irsch and Oberzerf near Saarburg and Trier. From September 29 to October 12 I will be living in a Saarburg apartment so that I can go to archives and government offices in the area and look for information. I am wondering if anyone knows of a person in that area who speaks English. who can read the old German script and would be willing to help me. Or does anyone have any suggestions on how to go about finding such a person? It would really facilitate my search. I would, of course, pay for the service. Kathy Gosz [email protected]
Hi My name is Mary beth and I am looking for information on Volarius JONAS and Anna Maria THEIL. I know of 2 children Mathias Jonas Born July 16, 1822 Joseph Jonas born June 20, 1828 Both of these men immigraated to Stearns County, Minnesota and have long lines of descendents, but little is known about their parents (Herresbach, Germany comes to mind as the area they came from). The marriage records from Jacobs Prairie, MN say the diosese of Trier, and the names of their parents--but thats all I know. Also Joseph married a Maria Anna ?Reiter/?Reuter whose parents wer George Hubert Reiter and Anna Gertrude Hersbach. I have many other families in the area with REITER< REUTER< LEITHER as family names, but no one matches her parents or information. Does anyone have any ideas or sites that may be helpful. Thanks Mary Beth [email protected]
My Grandparents were John Henry Nunnold, b. 1869 in Rochester, New York, and July Caroline Sills, b. 1863 in Kingston, NY. John's father was Peter Nunnold, b. abt. 1824 (probably in Germany) and Catherine Remmel. July Caroline's parents were John Sills, b. abt 1832 in Prussia and Elizabeth Ersfeld, b. abt 1839 in Germany. Elizabeth was born in a castle on the Rhine. Her father was a baron and may have been named Carl or Karl. The name Ersfeld does not show up in the Nobility Handbook. Can anyone help me? Since I don't know exactly where they were all from, I don't know what to do except put out queries. Thanks so much for any help or direction you can give me. Rolf, I just went to your very useful site and found the following entry under Hochdorf-Assenheim: 1. SEELINGER, Winfried: Familienbuch, THS, von 1412 bis 1912 "Familien in Hochdorf und Assenheim 1412-1912". Dannstadt-Schauernheim [1998?]. 1.Aufl. Format? Einband? 655 Seiten. Reihe: Deutsche Ortssippenbücher, Reihe B, Band 150. 2.600 Familien. ( Winfried SEELINGER, Gutenbergplatz 2, 67125 Dannstadt-Schauernheim ) Is Winfreid Seelinger the author and/or the contact for obtaining a copy of this book? With 2,600 families listed, my Bappert ancestors should be listed. Good job on your website, even with my very modest German language skills, I can work my way around. Mit frendlich Grüßen! Joe
Can anybody tell me anything about Urexweiler. I believe it is in Saarland. I am wondering if there are any Catholic records for there and where they may found.
Hi Joyce, The city of Zweibrücken has its own website at http://www.zweibruecken.de/ However it's in German only. Having also ancestors coming from Zweibrücken I have also written to them and got very kind and useful information. So I'm very surprised you didn't get an answer. Did you write in German? If you wrote in English, this may be a reason why you got no answer. Zweibrucken used to be part of Bavaria's Pfalz, hence the name Bezerk (should be bezirk amt or B.A. ), an administrative government locality. Zweibrucken, Germany and ZweiBrucken, Saarland BA are one and same. Saarland itself did not come into existence until 1957 as a State. Never was a province or whatever. Just a region called the Saar over which several wars were waged for (the Saar is rich in coal and iron) And Zweibrucken is a city, not a village or small town. FHC has records for Zweibrucken churches (Ev.-Reformierte, Ev., & Katholische), on microfilms. David Joyce VanKirk wrote: > > Hi!
