The descendants of the original German immigrants who settled in Orange and Rockland Co. all had many children. The traditional naming pattern was to name children after their grandparents: 1st male child after the paternal grandfather; 1st female child after the maternal grandmother; 2nd male child after the maternal grandfather; 2nd femald child after the paternal grandmother. After that, children were usually named for brothers or sisters of their parents. This resulted in MANY CHILDREN OF THE SAME NAME, born about the same time, in the same location until transportation became more common to a wider geographic area. One cannot assume, as an example, that a child named John Tremper b. in 1800 in Rockland or Orange, or even Ulster Co. or NYC, is the same person as one who later appears in a U.S. census in that same county. It is also common to find 1st cousins marrying 1st cousins, where the cousins have cousins bearing the same name. One needs to check numerous sour! ces before jumping to conclusions.
