    1. [TREADWAY] Thomas Jefferson Treadway (b. 1821, Lee Co, Ky) - Two Mysteries
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: duffymoonman Surnames: Treadway, Lutes, Barrett, Berry Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.treadway/477/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am at an impasse on this ancestor of mine. Thomas Jefferson Treadway, born 2/1/1821 in Lee County, Kentucky. He's my ggg-grandfather. His children: Priscilla Treadway (1849) Christopher Columbus Treadway (1852) William M Treadway (1854) (My gg-grandfather) Millard Filmore Treadway (1856) George Washington Treadway (1859) Mary Nelson Treadway (1863) Helen Treadway (1895) -- More about this one later. Mystery #1: Who are Thomas Jefferson's parents? I can't find a connection to any of the other Treadway lines in and around Lee County. I have an abridged version of a document called "The Descendants of Moses Treadway" which posits (you guessed it!) that Thomas Jefferson is the son of Moses Treadway and Caty Dewitt. This is, at best, unlikely, as they have another son named Thomas (Tillery) who would have been living at the time of Thomas Jefferson's birth. Also, Caty would have been nearing 50 at the time of TJ's birth. It's been speculated that perhaps TJ is a son of Peter D Treadway, from a first marriage, but I cannot find any evidence one way or another on this. It may be a piece of evidence that the only "sibling" of Thomas Jefferson listed in my "Descendants..." document is William Walton Treadway (who is indeed a son of Moses and Caty). Mystery #2: I have a photograph (sent by a wonderful individual here that I won't name!) of the headstones for Thomas Jefferson Treadway and his (first) wife Demandia Lutes. The stone for Thomas reads: "T J, Husband of Demandia Treadway...", and the one for Demandia reads: "Demandia, Wife of TJ Treadway..." This is odd to me as, after Demandia's death in 1888, Thomas Jefferson remarried to a "Armina"/Hermione Barret/Barrot/Barritt. He apparently even had a child with this second wife, when he was 74 years of age (Helen Treadway, listed above). The 1900 Census for Lee County shows Thomas J Treadway living with "Armina" ("wife"), her two sons (listed here as stepsons to Thomas), Helen (listed as daughter), and also "Abbergale Berry" listed as a sister to Thomas J. This last line is particularly interesting to me, as it might help out in solving Mystery #1. Abbergale is listed as being born in 6/1816. My question is, would it be unusual for a person in that era to be buried with a first wife if they subsequently remarried and had children by the second wife? I can't help wondering if there isn't "another" burial somewhere else, and perhaps this stone that matches Demandia's (first wife) was put up later by descendants. Can anyone help me with these two mysteries? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
