Their daughter, Helen King, bore 14 children, including 2 sets of twin sons, and my maternal Grandmother Edna. Edna is almost 88 and the last living of her siblings. Regarding your #2 question - TJ Treadway, widowed from wife Demandia, was about 71 when he married Armina Barrot. She was 27, and brought to the marriage two illegitimate sons, Elbert "Eb" Barrot and Shelby "Dick" Barrot. Armina is said to have been full Cherokee, spent her early years living as a traditional Native American in a "teepee" (my Grandmother's words), and was illiterate. I know nothing more about Armina Barrot's parents or the father of her two sons. TJ Treadway's first family would have nothing to do with TJ, Armina, and their children, and when TJ died, buried his body with his first wife, Demandia. Armina married John Shoemaker, a "wealthy" man, and is buried in the Shoemaker Ridge Cemetary, somewhere near Natural Bridge Park, KY. I found at usgennet.org/usa/ky/county/lee/census/1900/thomas.html a census list, pp. 127/128 for Thomas Jefferson Treadway and Armina. It lists the two stepsons, Elbert and Shelby, as well as the daughter Helen. Also listed in the household is Abbergale Berry, b.6/1816 older widowed sister of TJ Treadway. My Grandmother, Edna, has told me the following from her memory, which is quite sharp: TJ Treadway was an Elder and played the organ in the early Christian Church, and was also a High Sherrif. Grandmother remembers and uncle "Lom" (sp.?) Treadway. He had a long white beard, and a son named Porter. Grandmother has photos of TJ Treadway, Armina, and a few of Helen. I would like to figure out how and where to post them in case others are interested in seeing them. I'm new to researching my family's history, and this is my first post. Hope this helps. Lastly, by which of TJ Treadway's children are you a descendent? Carolyne Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: jktreadway Surnames: Treadway Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.treadway/477.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Actually, there is no evidence supporting Thomas Tillery Treadway being the son of Moses Treadway. All we know about his "origin" is that he claimed to be born in KY. The book by William T. Tredway contains correspondence with descendents of Moses Treadway who mention that Thomas Jefferson was indeed the son of Moses Treadway of KY. If I'm not mistaken, these family members were old enough to have known Thomas Jefferson personally. I don't have my copy with me or I would give page numbers. Thomas Jefferson is listed in the index, so the information should not be difficult to find. I would be more inclined to make Thomas Tillery a son of either John Treadway (b. 1781 in VA, son of Moses, son of Thomas) or Daniel Treadway (b. 1774 in MD, son of Thomas, son of Daniel, son of Thomas) or perhaps Isham Treadway (b. ca 1777, son of either William or Aaron, sons of Thomas). These are my own pet hypotheses, however, and need to be researched. If this is true, your line can be somewha! t confidently extended back to Richard Treadway of MD (d. 1720) as follows: Richard I, Richard II, John, Moses, Thomas Jefferson, William M., etc. I hope this helps! Perhaps I can help with the one mystery. Yes, it was a usual "tradition" when the first spouse died even if the surviving spouse remarried to be buried next to the first spouse. For instance, my great grandmother lost her first husband in an accident. Several years later, she remarried a local widower. He died first and was laid to rest next to his first spouse. When Granny died, we laid her next to her first husband. Back during that time, second marriages tended to be more out of convenience rather than love. Anita McClung Fayette County, WV </HTML>

Author: duffymoonman Surnames: Treadway, Lutes, Barrett, Berry Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.treadway/477/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am at an impasse on this ancestor of mine. Thomas Jefferson Treadway, born 2/1/1821 in Lee County, Kentucky. He's my ggg-grandfather. His children: Priscilla Treadway (1849) Christopher Columbus Treadway (1852) William M Treadway (1854) (My gg-grandfather) Millard Filmore Treadway (1856) George Washington Treadway (1859) Mary Nelson Treadway (1863) Helen Treadway (1895) -- More about this one later. Mystery #1: Who are Thomas Jefferson's parents? I can't find a connection to any of the other Treadway lines in and around Lee County. I have an abridged version of a document called "The Descendants of Moses Treadway" which posits (you guessed it!) that Thomas Jefferson is the son of Moses Treadway and Caty Dewitt. This is, at best, unlikely, as they have another son named Thomas (Tillery) who would have been living at the time of Thomas Jefferson's birth. Also, Caty would have been nearing 50 at the time of TJ's birth. It's been speculated that perhaps TJ is a son of Peter D Treadway, from a first marriage, but I cannot find any evidence one way or another on this. It may be a piece of evidence that the only "sibling" of Thomas Jefferson listed in my "Descendants..." document is William Walton Treadway (who is indeed a son of Moses and Caty). Mystery #2: I have a photograph (sent by a wonderful individual here that I won't name!) of the headstones for Thomas Jefferson Treadway and his (first) wife Demandia Lutes. The stone for Thomas reads: "T J, Husband of Demandia Treadway...", and the one for Demandia reads: "Demandia, Wife of TJ Treadway..." This is odd to me as, after Demandia's death in 1888, Thomas Jefferson remarried to a "Armina"/Hermione Barret/Barrot/Barritt. He apparently even had a child with this second wife, when he was 74 years of age (Helen Treadway, listed above). The 1900 Census for Lee County shows Thomas J Treadway living with "Armina" ("wife"), her two sons (listed here as stepsons to Thomas), Helen (listed as daughter), and also "Abbergale Berry" listed as a sister to Thomas J. This last line is particularly interesting to me, as it might help out in solving Mystery #1. Abbergale is listed as being born in 6/1816. My question is, would it be unusual for a person in that era to be buried with a first wife if they subsequently remarried and had children by the second wife? I can't help wondering if there isn't "another" burial somewhere else, and perhaps this stone that matches Demandia's (first wife) was put up later by descendants. Can anyone help me with these two mysteries? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
